We come together to share and strengthen our faith in God and each other by celebrating the sacraments and striving to follow God s teaching. We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church September 30, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time As we go about our days, we necessarily label, classify, and prioritize. What's "in" and what's "out" on our priority list? Because humans are social beings, we tend to do the same thing with people. We can only invite six people to the dinner party. Our young child wants to invite certain friends to her birthday, but we're keenly aware of who the parents are, and the prospect of spending several hours with them is enough to give us pause. In today's Gospel, Jesus' disciples face a classification problem. They've seen another person driving out demons in the name of Jesus. They recognize him, a non-apostle, as clearly "out." And yet "Jesus replied, 'Do not prevent him? whoever is not against us is for us." Jesus recognizes real faith in the would-be exorcist. In our own lives, Jesus invites us to recognize others' good intentions. They should not be cut off simply because they do not line up with all our personal preferences. What, then, is deserving o f s u c h a f a t e? "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off? if your eye c a u s e s y o u t o s i n, p l u c k i t o u t. " When his listeners blame others, Jesus tends to pivot the conversation to their own lives. In this case, the message is clear. What we really need to cut out is that which keeps us from Jesus. If over-commitment causes us to lose patience with our family, doubt God's providence, and become consumed with self-reliance, cut something out. If certain friendships lead us time after time into gossip and slander, cut it out. In today's Gospel, Jesus invites us to live intentionally in our discipleship. Are we ready? October Blessed Rosary We invite all our parishioners and visitors to join us as we say the rosary each Saturday before the 4:30 PM Mass. The Rosary will start each Saturday at 4:00 PM. Please honor our Blessed Mother with your presence. We particularly pray for our nation and all its needs. News from St. Raymond s Christian Mothers The St. Raymond s Christian Mothers will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 9, at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Social Hall. Missionary Cooperation Plan (Next Weekend, October 7, 2018) The Benedictine Fathers of Saint Vincent Archabbey, Latrobe, PA will be with us this year asking for our prayers and alms for their missions in Brazil and Taiwan and for the many foreign Seminarians who study at Saint Vincent and then return to ministry in their home countries. Wade was passed in the United States of America, we have lost 60 Million pre-born children to the heinous crime of abortion. This unjust law allows you to kill your child for any reason up until birth. How many inventors, engineers, teachers, firemen, police officers, priests, electricians, etc. have we aborted? May God forgive us of this sin. Know that God forgives, heals, and restores us if we have fallen victim to the lie told us about abortion. Rachel's Vineyard has a ministry for those hurt through abortion. Please pray for an end of abortion and all acts of violence in and out of the womb. NEW EVANGELIZATION Holiness and evangelization both begin by first declaring one s own sinfulness. To declare our own innocence and blame others for the evils in this world is the sin of pride, of judging others. Whether we are campaigning against abortion, sexual abuse or some other atrocity, we must first recognize that we all are guilty of pride and desirous of personal gratification. Of course, we are bound to take action against any injustice, but realize, for example, that both the abortionist and the pro-life activist are convinced that they are justified in the actions they take. Neither or both may be sinning. We must pray for mercy and forgiveness for ourselves as well as the other sinner. A worse sin would be to maintain that one is innocent and without sin. In the end, God will judge and give each of us our just reward of eternal punishment or eternal joy. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Being Catholic entails more than just being baptized, going to church on Sunday and knowing the Creed. It involves developing a sincere prayer life, living an exemplary moral life, regular reception of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. It necessitates that we cultivate the attitude and disposition for leading a good life based on the four cardinal virtues of prudence, justice, fortitude and temperance. Prudence is the virtue that disposes our conscience to make good decisions and act accordingly. Justice consists in the determination to give God and neighbor their due. Fortitude strengthens one s resolve to resist temptations and face trials or persecutions. Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods. These four virtues are the basis of all virtue. Our Bible Discussion Study Group will meet again this Thursday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Social Hall. Make plans to attend. Celebration the Season of Creation The Season of Creation is September 1 (the World Day of Prayer for Creation) through October 4 (the Feast of St. Francis). To celebrate this Season of Creation the Creation Care Team invites you to take the Saint Francis Pledge to live Laudato Si!, Pope Francis encyclical on care for our common home, by prayer, action, and advocacy. If you have taken the Pledge, THANK YOU! If you haven t, it is not too late. BIBLE As a single book, the Bible is divided into two parts: the Old Testament (OT) portrays the times before Jesus and the New Testament (NT) concerns the times during and after the life of Jesus. Prior to the invention of writing and papyrus about 1250 BC, history was taught by word of mouth. Biblical writings extend from the time of King David about 1000 BC and conclude about 100 AD with the death of John. The basis of the OT is the first five books known as the Pentateuch or the Torah; the basis of the NT is the Gospels. In addition to the Pentateuch, the other divisions of the OT are the Historical Books, the Wisdom Books and the Prophetic Books. Besides the Gospels, the NT contains the Letters, or Epistles, and the Book of Revelation. Christian scholars agree that Christ and the NT events are prefigured by the people and events in the OT.
