2 "This is how it is with the kingdom of God." What is a kingdom? Is it the brick and mortar that build up the castle? Is it the expanse of land a king can reasonably defend? Our notions of kingdoms may be romanticized in the modern era, but for the Israelites, a kingdom held deep historical meaning. Thousands of years before the birth of Christ, the Israelites had asked God for a king. After the reigns of David and Solomon, the united kingdom dissolved into factions, and the land was conquered by the Assyrians, Babylonians, and, finally, Romans. For the Israelites, a kingdom was something to build, both structurally and civilly. While this had ended in ruin for their ancestors, many of Jesus' contemporaries longed for the restoration of an earthly kingdom. Jesus' words in today's Gospel are a radical departure from this perspective. He compares the Kingdom of God to a field, but it appears that the farmer has little to do with its progress. "The seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord, the land yields fruit." Jesus introduces his followers to a new sort of kingdom, a kingdom where God provides the growth. There is work to be done, of course. "When the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once, for the harvest has come." But for the Kingdom of God to flourish, there are certain things that are outside of our control. We sow seeds of kindness, justice, and integrity? and then we must be patient. As shoots of faith appear, we nurture the growth with encouragement. As Christians, our task is not to build the Kingdom of God under our power alone, but to trust in the life-giving movement of God. June 19 July 30 th, Tuesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 pm in the library featuring a lectionary based Bible study and utilizing the readings from the past Sunday and the upcoming readings for the next Sunday, breaking open and trying to understand the message. All are invited to join us. DEFICIT REDUCTION Summer is definitely here maybe not on the calendar yet, but certainly in the air. Attendance is light but the doors are still open. Watch for a deficit reduction envelope in your envelope packet or through a parish-wide mailing. Prayerfully consider how you can help the parish thrive in these leaner months. MINISTRY ANNOUNCEMENTS Altar Server Training, Updating, and Appreciation All future and current altar servers are asked to save Wednesday, June 20 th for a special event focusing on the ministry of being an altar server. We will gather at 4pm in the worship space for a training and updating session for all who wish to become altar servers as well as those already in this ministry, then go for pizza and laser tag as a recognition and thanks for all you do for the parish! We should be wrapped up around 8pm. Parent drivers are needed! Please contact New Brian if you can help with this. Art and Environment Committee All those with an appreciation for creating the best welcoming and esthetically pleasing setting for our weekend worship services are asked to become members of the parish Art and Environment Committee! We will have a meeting in mid-july to plan for the upcoming year, then there will be monthly gatherings established to carry out the plans established by the group. If you have an eye for design please contact New Brian at the parish office and allow your gifts to serve the parish in this ministry!

St. Bridget Spirituality Center Spiritual Direction Have you heard of the ancient Catholic practice of Spiritual Direction? Very early in our history and through the centuries individuals have sought out companions and guides for their spiritual growth. Today, women and men, lay folk and members of the clergy rely on trained spiritual companions to walk with them on the spiritual journey. 5 ST. VINCENT DEPAUL Spiritual In the Gospel, Jesus says: This is how it is with the reign of God. A man scatters seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up day after day. Through it all the seed sprouts and grows without his knowing how it happens. Pantry SVDP May totals.
