2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church November 18, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time As we edge closer to the closing of the liturgical year, the Church selects readings that remind us of the final close: the second coming of Christ. It's easy, perhaps, to forget that this is a dogma of our Catholic faith. We see this dramatic end times language in today's Gospel. "The sun will be darkened... and the stars will be falling from the sky." As Christians and as human beings, we know all things will come to an end. "But of that day or hour, no one knows." The "end of the world" and end of time at Jesus' coming is in a future unknown. But God has given us beautiful reminders of this truth. We see the signs and symbols of ending all around us -- nightfall at the end of each day; the life cycle of crops coming alive, bearing fruit, and being harvested; our own death. That, too, will come at an unknown day and hour. But that is the way of things. Even as God created in Genesis, He gave us a sense of time -- the sun rising and setting, a beginning and a n e n d -- t o m a r k o u r d a y s. So how do we welcome these built-in forms of measurement? Do we take time to quietly recollect at the end of each day? Do we see every morning as a fresh start for mercies new? Do we observe the seasons and reflect on what they might be speaking to us of God and His glory? "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my works will not pass away." The little beginnings and little ends are opportunities to renew our faith in Jesus, if only we have the eyes to see! Many hands made quick work with setting the tables making stuffing and preparing the turkey, serving and of course cleaning up! With plenty of people who enjoyed this time of fellowship and good food with an abundance of delicious desserts. What a great day to enjoy all of our blessings together! NEW EVANGELIZATION We are citizens of both Church and State. We have rights and responsibilities derived from both, but if there is any conflict, we must give precedence to the Laws of God over the laws of any government. The State is obliged to provide for the physical and material welfare of its citizens whereas the Church is obliged to provide for the moral and spiritual welfare of its citizens. The State uses the sword and military might to accomplish its purposes but the Church bases its strength on the power of prayer and Faith in God s promise of an eternal life with Him in heaven. As Christians we are called to be of service to the poor, to live our lives with thoughtful consideration of and in obedience to the Law of Love. The children of Adam often follow their own will; the children of God obediently pick up and carry their crosses. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults To be a Christian is to carry a cross. Everyone, at one time or another, experiences hardships and difficulties; the Christian s response is to pray and ask God for the ordeal to miraculously go away or if not, to grant the strength and support to deal with it. As the biblical character Job said, If we accept good things from God, shouldn t we also accept the bad? Even Jesus prayed, Father, if possible, let this chalice pass from me but if not, let your will be done. Some react by blaming God and cursing Him, but to simply blame and complain brings no relief. No one enjoys suffering, but Jesus has given us the example that God will help us to endure for a time with the promise of a resurrection and a reward of eternal life of happiness, consolation and joy. With God s help we not only endure but help others to carry their crosses.

This collection helps six Catholic agencies to provide relief and support to struggling communities and to work toward peace and reconciliation among our marginalized brothers and sisters here and around the world. Please prayerfully consider how you can support them. Learn more at BIBLE The Gospel of Luke is used throughout year C, which will begin on December 2, the first Sunday of Advent. Luke was a Gentile physician who was converted by and became a disciple and traveling companion of St. Paul. He wrote his Gospel in Greek about 80 AD, about 15 years after the martyrdoms of Ss. Peter and Paul. In addition to the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, his account of the life-death-resurrection of Jesus indicates that Mary and the Apostle John were personal sources of information. His Gospel ends with Jesus life on earth, but his sequel, the Acts of the Apostles, relates events of the early Christians and the missionary journeys of St. Paul to describe the spread of Christianity from Jerusalem to the ends of the known world. His Gospel is an easy read and can be done in one or two sessions.
