2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church October 14, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time Christian author C.S. Lewis once wrote that Christianity is not so much about being nice people but in being "new men." We see this contrast in today's Gospel. "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus first answers in the predictable way. Follow the commandments! "Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth." Perhaps for some of us it's easy to answer this way. "I'm a good person!" he seems to reply. Does he truly follow all the commandments he professes to follow? Does he -- in word and deed -- check off all the boxes of the moral law? Perhaps. Whether he's being honest or fudging the truth, Jesus accepts his answer at face value with compassion. "Jesus, looking at him, loved him." But he's not done yet! Jesus wants to remind us that this attitude alone is not enough. "Go, sell what you have... then come, follow me." Jesus' invitation to the young man is radical. Abandon everything that gives you any sense of security. Give it all up for an unknown future with a wandering preacher. The Christian life is not easy. "How hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!" It's easier, Jesus says, for a gigantic camel to squeeze itself through a tiny needle's eye. But the God of the universe creates out of nothing, breaks the bars of hell, and raises the dead to life. Is a needle's eye really such an obstacle? Jesus' invitation is always bigger than our own limitations. This week, what do we need to offer up? How is Jesus inviting us to follow him? St. Anne Home Lottery Calendars Lottery calendars benefitting St. Ann Home will be sold at the Church Narthex before and after Mass next weekend, October 20 & 21. The cost is $25 per calendar with 365 days to win! Your generosity has made this fundraiser successful in the past, and we hope you will support St. Anne Home again this year. God bless you! NEW EVANGELIZATION The new evangelization is a call to proclaim the teachings of Jesus Christ and a call to repentance. Caution must be taken to avoid proclaiming one s own beliefs and understandings as the criteria of right and wrong. Even as we work to end injustices, we all share the guilt of being sinners who actively contribute to a culture of selfgratification and self-righteousness and who resist anyone who challenges our convictions. Every pope since the Second Vatican Council Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis states that evangelization demands that we first humbly admit our own need for forgiveness, and acquire accurate knowledge of our Faith by studying especially the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Being thus well-grounded we can proceed to carry out our mission to share our Faith by deed and by word. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults At Baptism we become members of the Catholic Church. As Christians our vocation is to live our faith and be holy. We must pray and study in order to promote our interior spiritual growth. The Bible and the Catechism are primary resources we should use to promote this growth. Actively participating in the liturgies of the Eucharist and Reconciliation also supply us with the food for our journey through life. It is also essential that we plan and set aside at least a few minutes every day for reading, quiet reflection or meditation lest we fail to make our faith the guiding factor in our lives. If we do these things, our lives will result in peace of mind with the confidence and strength to bear the crosses we all must endure. An eternal reward is well worth the effort. BIBLE At the present time our Gospel readings for Sunday are being taken from the Gospel of Mark. This was probably the earliest Gospel, written about 70AD. It presents Jesus teachings in story form, and is filled with accounts of conflicts between Him and demons and human opponents. Mark reveals Jesus to be the Messiah and the Son of God at His baptism by John in the Jordan. The Gospel recounts the call of the disciples, Jesus ministry in Galilee, His healings and teachings, and His disputes with religious leaders as He journeys to His death and resurrection in Jerusalem. It was written in Rome for Gentiles unfamiliar with Jewish customs shortly after the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul. Mark wrote this Gospel to encourage Christians to remain faithful in times of persecution. Our Bible Discussion Study Group sessions will continue this Thursday, October 18, at 6:30 in the Parish Social Hall. Come and participate.
