2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church January 20, 2019 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time When you think of being Catholic, what do you think of? Perhaps you grew up with your only associations being fasting, nuns with rulers, and "Catholic guilt." Our faith can sometimes have the connotation of restriction and absence, not abundance. Who is God in your life? Is He the divine law-giver, the judge punishing the rulebreakers? These are certainly attributes of God. But the laws don't exist for themselves alone. They exist to help us love one another as God loves us. And this loving God is the author of abundance and joy. Did you hear today's Gospel? "There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee." Here at this wedding, Jesus would perform "the beginning of his signs...and so reveal his glory." This first sign isn't a miraculous healing. He didn't raise someone from the dead. He kept a party going! "There were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons...the water...had become wine." The wine has run out. Jesus creates somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons to help his friend save face. We may not have such momentous miracles in our lives, but God is watching out for us. The string of green lights when you're running late. The sale on the replacement appliance you need. The friend who calls at just the right time. These are the little moments of God's abundance. We just need to look for them! Not only does Jesus surprise, but the guests point out to their host: "You have kept the good wine until now." The divine wine is better than the earthly variety. God's goodness is better than what we can grasp at for ourselves. Isn't that how it always goes? Evening for homeschool families with Bishop Malesic The Office of Faith, Family, and Discipleship invites homeschool families from the diocese to an evening of prayer, faith, spirituality and fellowship with Bishop Malesic February 20 at St. Bruno Parish from 6-9 p.m. Mass is at 6 p.m. and will be followed by a potluck reception. 3 A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust and A Parish of the Diocese of Greensburg NEW EVANGELIZATION New Evangelization is a form of spirituality. It is a constant inner search to understand and live according God s will: As Your adopted Child, Father, are You proud of me? I am sorry for my imperfections and failing to properly discern Your Will in my service to those around me. Our lives should be filled with the humility and obedience exemplified by Jesus and His Virgin Mother, Mary. I am sorry and I repent of the times I failed to hear and see You or serve You in all I meet. Please forgive me and all others for our sins and even for our unknown faults that displease You. Teach me Your commands so I may exemplify living as a member of Your Holy Family. Our own self-abasement and service to others should lead to increased fervor and ardor on our part and prompt others to consider this Christian way of life. BIBLE The Gospel of John is very different from the other three Gospels. John uses symbols to present his message that Jesus is the divine Son of God. In themselves, his miracles demonstrate that Jesus had power beyond human abilities, but in addition he further explains that natural substances also have a deeper, spiritual meaning. In particular, light is a symbol of truth and understanding; temporal physical life symbolizes eternal spiritual life; water, God s laws and teachings; bread, the Eucharist; shepherd, a provider and protector; and the vine represents divinity and God himself. The water I shall give will become a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4: 14) and I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst (6: 35). Thoughtful reading of the Bible and this Gospel in particular is very rewarding. January Calendar Ticket Winners! Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults In Part Three of the Catechism of the Catholic Church we are given guidelines on Christian Holiness. All Christians are called to holiness. God calls us all to intimate union with him. The way of perfection passes by the way of the Cross. There is no holiness without renunciation and spiritual battle. Spiritual progress entails mortification that gradually leads to living in the peace and joy of the Beatitudes. Grace is the help God gives us to respond to our vocation of becoming his adopted children. The divine initiative in the work of grace precedes, prepares, and elicits the free response of man. We can have merit in God s sight only with his grace. Merit is to be ascribed in the first place to the grace of God and secondly to man s collaboration. Charity is the principle source of merit in us before God. (## 2012~2029) Horse Racing at St. Raymond Horse Racing is back at St. Raymond Get ready to saddle up on Saturday, February 16! Celebrating Creation Tuesday this week is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn children. Humanity is the part of creation made in God s own image and likeness. We cherish all human life, born and unborn, physically or mentally challenged or not, frail or robust, regardless of race or creed or sexual orientation. When we embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, we can no longer love according to whether we judge a person deserving or undeserving. All human life is precious in God s eyes. I give you a new commandment. Love one another. As I have loved you, so you should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (John 13:34-35)
