St. Raymond of the Mountains Parish Mission Statement We, the parish of St. Raymond of the Mountains (Donegal, PA) are situated in a resort area and comprised of many rural communities. We come together to share and strengthen our faith in God and each other by celebrating the sacraments and striving to follow God s teaching. We are called to be open to the Holy Spirit and to build a stronger Faith Community by serving the needs of others, by educating, and by welcoming all.

2 St. Raymond of the Mountains Church July 23, 2017 Scripture of the Week 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil." This is not a pretty picture. Jesus shares a parable in today's Gospel that reminds us of a truth we would rather forget: evil is real, and the devil is at work. The bountiful harvest of our faith is something that Satan wants to destroy. And he has a host of diabolical tactics to help him carry out his wicked plans. But there is one strategy in particular that we must be on guard against. As the French poet Charles Baudelaire put it, "The devil's finest trick is to persuade you that he does not exist." Sneaky as it may be, this approach is effective! And, unfortunately, the attitude of our modern era is very conducive to buying the lie. Too often we dismiss the idea of the invisible spiritual reality of angels and demons. It doesn't seem "scientific" enough for us because it can't be seen or "proven." But neither can our faith! We believe in a host of invisible realities starting with God himself. We should not be fooled into thinking that the devil is a make-believe cartoon character with red horns and a pitchfork on his shoulder. Alas, no. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us, "Scripture witnesses to the disastrous influence of the one Jesus calls 'a murderer from the beginning'" (CCC 394) and, as we read in the Bible, "Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the Devil" (1 Jn 3:8). This is not pretend, and so it must be taken seriously. But so too, the reality of Satan must be situated within the broader context of God's supreme power. The devil "cannot prevent the building up of God's reign" (CCC 395). The influence of evil can never defeat the power of our faith, unless we let it do so. Drug education and prayer service evenings with Bishop Malesic continue in August The Summer Diocesan Drug Education and Prayer Service Evenings, which Bishop Edward C. Malesic announced in A Pastoral Letter on the Drug Abuse Crisis: From Death and Despair to Life and Hope, continues: Wed., Aug. 2, St. Joseph Parish, Uniontown; Thurs., Aug. 3, Our Lady of Grace Parish, Greensburg; Tues., Aug. 8, St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittanning; Thurs., Aug. 10, Mary Queen of Apostles School, Greenwald Site, New Kensington; and Wed., Aug. 16, St. Thomas More University Parish, Indiana. The sessions all begin at 7 PM and are open to the public. There will be an educational presentation about the opioid epidemic in the region, a question-and-answer session and a prayer service led by Bishop Malesic. Young adult listening sessions with Bishop Malesic in advance of synod The Diocese of Greensburg will host three young adult listening sessions in preparation for the 2018 Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment. Young adults ages are invited to attend one of the sessions. After refreshments and a brief introduction, participants will be separated into small groups by approximate age to discuss questions focused on the young Church in today s world. Then they will be invited to discuss in a large group setting some of the most relevant questions with each other and with Bishop Edward C. Malesic. 3 A Pennsylvania Charitable Trust and A Parish of the Diocese of Greensburg Announcement Within the next few weeks, parishioners and Friends of St. Raymond will receive an invitation to celebrate the 50 th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Church Building in Donegal. All are invited to attend the Parish Mass at 10:30 a.m. on September 10 with Bishop Edward C. Malesic, JCL, Celebrant. Following the Mass all are invited to the Anniversary Reception held in the Social Hall. 50 th Anniversary Monetary Gifts will be accepted to help defray the cost of the Anniversary Reception. Envelopes are available on the table in the back of the church. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Choir Practice Choir practice for the 50th Anniversary celebration of St. Raymond Church will be held every Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at St. Raymond Church. If anyone is interested, you re all invited to join us. REMINDER TO ALL 8 th GRADERS Confirmation workshops will be held again this Tuesday, July 25. Workshops run from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided. If you are unable to attend the workshops, contact Toni Terretti. Giving is easy while you are away this summer. Go to OLGapp.com and click on the app store for your device. 50th Wedding Anniversary Bishop Malesic invites all couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during the calendar year 2017 to participate in a special Golden Jubilee Mass to be held at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends please contact the Parish Office to register couples for this celebration. Even though they may not be able to attend the Mass, they will receive a scroll signed by the Bishop commemorating their anniversary. Barbeque Chicken Dinner You may dine-in or take-out for the third Barbeque Chicken Dinner from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m., Sunday, August 6 at St. Raymond Social Hall. Adult dinners include ½ barbeque chicken, mac salad, baked beans, dessert and drink for $9. Kids 5 and younger menu includes hot dog or chicken leg, mac salad, baked beans, dessert and drink, for $4.50. Presale tickets are available by calling or you may purchase them at the door. DESSERTS ARE NEEDED!! If you are interested in giving a cake, pie or any dessert for the Barbeque chicken dinner, please sign-up on the sheet on the table in the back of the church. Please bring desserts to the serving area in the social hall by 9 a.m., August 6. Thank you. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Once again we are asking for volunteers to help with the Barbeque Chicken Dinner on August 6. Please take a flyer from the table in the back of the church and post at any business that you patronize. Conn-Area Catholic School News Conn-Area Catholic School has a preschool for 4-year olds. The program includes experiences in religion, physical education, music, art, Spanish, and inclusion in all the school s assemblies and events. Even the 4-yeara olds participate in our Leadership program. Preschool orientations are being offered on July 27 th at 6:00 p.m. or August 3 rd, at 9:00 a.m. Parents must have their children registered in order to attend. It is not too late.
