3 GOSPEL MEDITATION July 22, 2018 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Now what?" It's a difficult thing to hear, isn't it? The train comes late, a child unexpectedly cries, and the latest public policy debate flares up in the news. Life throws us curveballs, and we have no choice but to adapt. Jesus and the Apostles find themselves in that exact situation in today's Gospel. The Apostles have returned from their two-by-two missionary journey. As Jesus hears all of their stories, he knows they need time to recover and refresh. "Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while." Their wilderness retreat is short-lived, however, as eager crowds discover their location. Jesus is well aware of the needs of his disciples. Still, as he looks out at the crowd, "His heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd." The rest break is over. "He began to teach them many things." For those of us who have experienced a taste of much-needed relaxation only to have it taken away abruptly, perhaps we surmise what the Apostles might have been feeling in that moment. But Jesus isn't being inconsiderate of the Apostles needs. He offers them -- and us -- a lived lesson. St. John Paul II wrote, "The whole of Christ's life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world" (On Catechesis in Our Time, 9). In Jesus' choice to teach, we see all of these things: sacrificial love, concern for the marginalized, and priority of people's needs over personal preference. These aren't abstract ideals. They're lived realities as we strive to live and love like Jesus. When a new obstacle confronts you in your life, how do you respond? At Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially William Brooks Please pray for the consolation of his loved ones. On Mission Update: The ministry of hospitality is one of the most important priorities of the new groupings as we begin to move towards October 15th and the implementation of our new Mass schedule. Hospitality is essential for helping people feel welcome in a parish. Each parish is asked to have sufficient greeters on hand at the doors of the Church before and after Mass to welcome people to the parish. This is especially true as many parishioners will begin to worship at other parishes in the grouping with the new Mass schedule. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please consider becoming a greeter for your parish. It is a simple but important ministry. We need you in place about 20 minutes before Mass begins and standing at the doors. Greeters smile and warmly greet people as they come to Mass. Good morning, great to see you, glad you are here, welcome are all appropriate greetings. Be attentive to the elderly or those with special needs and offer whatever assistance is needed. After communion take your station again at the doors and extend a word of thanks for those who have come. Hand out a bulletin and say Have a great day, glad you were here, see you next week, God bless you. More information will be forthcoming as we learn more. This is a significant priority for us as we prepare for the implementation of our Mass schedule changes in October. Golden Wedding Celebration The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its Golden Wedding Celebration for couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. A special Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Zubik on Sunday, October 7, at 2:30 PM at St. Paul Cathedral. A light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. All couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary any time this year and wishing to receive an invitation to this event should call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Sunday, August 5.

4 Visiting Priests Fr. Jim Orr is on vacation until July 28th. In his absence, we have the following Priests scheduled for Masses: Sat. July 4:00 pm: Bishop William Winter Sat. July 6:00 pm: Fr. Jim Garvey Sun. July 7:30 am: Fr. Doug Boyd Sun. July 9:00 am: Fr. Jim Garvey Sun. July 11:00 am: Fr. Mike Ackerman Mon. July 8:30 am: Fr. Raymond Luther Tues. July 8:30 am: Fr. Jim Garvey Wed. July 8:30 am: Fr. Raymond Luther Thurs. July 8:30 am: Fr. Raymond Luther Fri. July 8:30 am: Fr. Raymond Luther Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Lawrence at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, August 5th at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For August, it will be the relic of Saint Lawrence. For more information, please visit the Chapel s website saintanthonyschapel.org Our Lady of Fatima Traveling Statue The Traveling Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will arrive at St. Anthony s Chapel on Wednesday, August 1st and will remain at the Chapel until August 16th. Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention for July Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. Ladies of Charity Backpack Drive The Ladies of Charity are asking for your support for their Drive for Backpacks for the children at Providence Connections. In August, they help local families with back-to-school supplies. We have a bin in each church from now until July 29th. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to Ladies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. Women and Men Sharing Faith and Hope Our next meeting is Monday, July 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius. Please read Chapters (also called letters) 4, 5 and 6 of The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis. Volunteers are Needed We are in need of volunteers for the picnic on August 26th for one hour onle. You don't need to attend the picnic for the entire time. We need help with set up (beginning at 11:30), during (1:00-6:00) and cleanup (5:30-6:30). If you can help please contact Mary Beth Miller at marybeth.miller@comcast.net. The Lord Is My Shepherd, There Is Nothing I Shall Want One of the most tender images we have of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd. Just as a shepherd guides the flock, so Jesus leads us, his flock, keeping us safe, encouraging us, placing us on his shoulders when we have strayed as he draws us back into the fold. The Lord s work as shepherd of our hearts is not limited to a time of trial or need in our lives. Jesus is always, actively leading us and it is the responsibility of each of us as Christians to listen to the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow him on the path of life. Not only does Jesus lead us individually as his sisters and brothers, but also wholly as the Church. The shepherd keeps the flock moving together as one and goes in search of the lost in order that they may be one with the Church again. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we trust in the guidance of Christ the Good Shepherd to lead us and the Church through this time of change. The Lord does not abandon his flock and will strengthen us as we draw closer to him in faith and to each other as the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org

11 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 21 & 22, 2018 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - In today s gospel the apostles gathered around and told Jesus all they had done. Listening allows the other person to express, understand & appreciate experiences. Whether it is the excited chatter of a child or the repetitious stories of an aging grandparent, listening is important. It is not just time well spent, it is sacred time. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples to Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. Vincent de Paul, a great man of action was also a contemplative. His contemplation of God s love overflowed into practical love for the poor. Please say a special prayer for the poor and forgotten as you give to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Ladies: Pope Francis tells us that in responding to the call to holiness, "The important thing is that each believer discern her own path and that they bring out the very best of themselves". Join us as we explore the theme I Have Chosen You on Sept 14,15,16 at St Paul's Retreat Center. Around the Neighborhood Revolutionary: Do you know that God is calling you to do something great with your life but struggle to discern what that is? This summer, the Vocations Office presents Revolutionary: Ignite Your Passion and Purpose in Christ, a young adult conference tailored to helping you discover God s will for your life on August 5 from 4:00 pm 8:30 pm at St. Paul Seminary. Come for an awesome evening of Mass, a talk, food trucks, a Vocations Fair, and a time of adoration. Nichole Abisinio, a marketing executive for the film Hacksaw Ridge, will speak; Father Nick Vaskov will celebrate Mass; and John Paul Von Arx will lead worship.
