3 GOSPEL MEDITATION July 15, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time "He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two." This Sunday we read the first sending of the Apostles to preach, teach, and heal. For many of us, it can be easy to think we "just don't have enough" to be disciples and evangelists ourselves. We don't have enough education and training. We don't have enough experience talking to people about Jesus. We don't pray enough. We don't have enough faith. If you look at the Apostles in today's Gospel reading, they didn't have much either. "No food, no sack, no money in their belts." They didn't plan out their itinerary or book their lodging in advance. From what we know of the Apostles, they were not the religiously trained and educated ones. They were fisherman, tax collectors, and political activists. But what does being a fisherman require? Someone like Peter needed a strong work ethic to rise at strange hours. He needed patient calm to wait for the catch. Once ashore, he needed a savvy mind to fetch a good price for his labors As Peter became a fisher of men, he would need diligence to persevere through the hard journeys, long days, and persecution that awaited him. He would need patient calm with those who disagreed with him. As the leader of the Apostles, he would need a savvy mind to navigate challenges facing the early Church. From one perspective, Peter has nothing to offer the mission of Jesus. Thinking more creatively, one can see that -- joined with faith and love -- perhaps Peter had everything he needed Jesus sends you as well. As you take stock of your own talents, consider how they might be offered as a gift to others. Maybe you already have more than enough. Gabe was a talented musician who was employed as the Choir Director at Most Holy Name for several seasons. May he rest in peace. On Mission Update: The ministry of hospitality is one of the most important priorities of the new groupings as we begin to move towards October 15th and the implementation of our new Mass schedule. Hospitality is essential for helping people feel welcome in a parish. Each parish is asked to have sufficient greeters on hand at the doors of the Church before and after Mass to welcome people to the parish. This is especially true as many parishioners will begin to worship at other parishes in the grouping with the new Mass schedule. A ministry of hospitality means that community and relationship building is important and expresses an understanding of the presence and love of Christ. Genuine hospitality sets the tone for the liturgy and building the Body of Christ - as we welcome our brothers and sisters in faith, we are welcoming Jesus. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please consider becoming a greeter for your parish. It is a simple but important ministry. We need you in place about 20 minutes before Mass begins and standing at the doors. Greeters smile and warmly greet people as they come to Mass. Good morning, great to see you, glad you are here, welcome are all appropriate greetings. Be attentive to the elderly or those with special needs and offer whatever assistance is needed. After communion take your station again at the doors and extend a word of thanks for those who have come. Hand out a bulletin and say Have a great day, glad you were here, see you next week, God bless you. Greeters must be people who smile easily, are warm and friendly, enjoy conversation with others and have the ability to treat everyone with dignity. Please consider becoming a greeter. More information will be forthcoming as we learn more. This is a significant priority for us as we prepare for the implementation of our Mass schedule changes in October. 4 Ladies of Charity Backpack Drive The Ladies of Charity are asking for your support for their Drive for Backpacks for the children at Providence Connections. This would include children of all ages. In August, they try to help the families with back-to-school supplies and the Director noted they never have enough backpacks. We now have a bin in each church from now until July 29th. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to Ladies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. Women and Men Sharing Faith and Hope Our next meeting is Monday, July 16th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius. Please read Chapters (also called letters) 1, 2, and 3 of The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis. Our Lady of Fatima Traveling Statue The Traveling Statue of Our Lady of Fatima will arrive at St. Anthony s Chapel on Wednesday, August 1st and will remain at the Chapel until August 16th. Sales, refreshments and more! Catholic Community Food Bank The Catholic Community Food Bank continues to serve the needs of those in our community. The 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to noon at Most Holy Name Church Hall is the designated day for distributions. Tuesday, July 17th is the next distribution date. A Great Time at Vacation Bible School! A huge Thank You to all who helped with this year s Vacation Bible School. I was overwhelmed by the generous donation of drinks, snacks and monetary support for VBS. Thank you to all who gave of their time and talents with creating waterfalls and other aspects of scenery to make it feel like a river rafting adventure. Thank you to ALL who gave of their time and talents to be river guides (teachers and aides) this week. The children and I appreciated your assistance and enthusiasm. This week would not have happened without you. Thanks to all of the families who brought your children every day to ride on this adventure with Jesus. We had approximately 22 families participate with a total of 40 children. On the river we found Adventure, Acceptance, Joy, Rest and Peace through bible stories, videos, games, music and fun. Restoration work at St. Anthony s Chapel Restoration work was started this past week at St. Anthony s Chapel. July 21 - One Day Rummage Sale - 8am - 2pm Male Volunteers Needed for Rummage House The Rummage House is in need of some volunteers (young men or retired men) to help put up and take down tents on sale weekends. This is a temporary volunteer opportunity that is a huge need for the house. Setting up the tents is usually done on Wednesday before the sale and the tents are taken down on Sunday at the conclusion of the sale and then stored for the next months sale. We collect, argue about and protect our things. Garage sales only transfer things. We ignore each other because we have things to do. What things are separating you from your family? St. Vincent de Paul Society - In the Gospel today we see how Jesus sent his Apostles out two by two. From the beginning of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, members visit in pairs two by two, those who are poor and needy in their homes. It is there, in the family setting, that Vincentians listen, offer humble advice, and render assistance. Have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor? Guns N Hoses - Mark your calendars for the Annual Guns N Hoses Softball Game on August 11th at Reserve Primary School Field. Touch a Truck at Noon; Softball Game begins at 2:00 pm.
