3 From the desk of Fr. Jim I am sad to say that Jim Gottermeyer has left us to assume the Directorate of Spark of Hope, a community aid organization out of St. Sebastian Parish much like St. Vincent de Paul and Ladies of Charity. Jim has done a great job here as my Administrative Assistant and Facilities Manager. I would like to thank him for all his good work for St Aloysius Parish. Jim will still be seen here as he is volunteering to assist with some transitional jobs as Becky takes over a number of his duties and we look to find ways to fulfill others by way of volunteers. As we are so close to October 15th and how the 6 parishes are going to be administered is still unknown, I cannot honestly promise any replacement for Jim long term employment. So for now we will not be finding a replacement for him. Between Jim Neely, Becky and myself, we will be doing a lot of what Jim Gottermeyer has done. As of October 15th Fr. Luther Raymond will be moving into the Rectory. Fr. Raymond is a student at Duquesne University and so will be a resident. He will be helping out with Masses. If as is planned he competes his studies at the end of this school year, he will be going back to his home Diocese in Nigeria. With all the changes and new clergy in our local grouping on October 15th, Fr. Garvey will no longer be helping with Masses here as of then. He will then help at The Little Sisters of the Poor home. He has an aunt who lives there so it will be a good way of him staying in touch with family. It used to be said that the only constants in life are death and taxes, but that also implies that there is one other constant...change. Change is coming upon us. It is important that we stay in touch with God in our prayer as we go through the coming months. God is our real constant here and into eternity. God bless you. Pax, Fr. Jim Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention for September Universal: Young People in Africa That young people in Africa may have access to education and work in their own countries. At Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Janet Brown Andrew Mikolay Please pray for the consolation of their loved ones. A PRAYER VIGIL OF REPARATION AND PETITION Sunday, September 9, :00 pm at St. Anthony s Chapel Troy Hill - Pittsburgh All Catholics are invited to an afternoon of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament to ask for His mercy upon His Church in this moment of profound crisis. We come to make reparation for own sins and those of our bishops and priests. We gather in prayer that from Christ s mercy will come the healing and restoration of holiness for which we all hope. 1 PM - Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Holy Hour of Reparation follows Bishop s Education Fund This weekend, the Annual Collection for The Bishop s Education Fund will be taken in each Parish of our Diocese. This Fund helps those students who would like to receive a Catholic education but need financial assistance. Thank you for your generosity. Sitters needed at St. Anthony s Chapel Currently, the chapel is in need of sitters (attendants). If you are able to volunteer one hour a week (or month) to be present to Our Lord and his saints, please call

Even as we read the accounts of the miracles Jesus worked, like the healing of the deaf and mute man in today s Gospel, we are amazed at the powerful love of God at work to heal and strengthen us. In particular, Jesus cry of Ephphatha! (be opened!), is not simply so that the deaf man s ears would be open and that his tongue would be freed. It is also a call for his heart to be opened in faith and trust in God. The Lord cries out Ephphatha! for us, too, that we might be opened to his powerful love at work for and in and through us. This is not only for our benefit, but for the benefit of our parishes, our communities, the Church and the world. As we prepare for the implementation of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the Lord invites us to be opened to the work of the Spirit so that we can be strengthened for the work of building the Church. If we can be amazed by what God works for those in the Scriptures, we can certainly be amazed by what God can work through us. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

We saw the tower fall and we saw the selfless first responders run toward the falling towers and debris without concern for their well-being, but for that of the fallen men and women. This is the model of patriotism, and why we now celebrate Patriot Day. Let us pray... O God of selfless love, we are a blest people to have a god like you. You instill your love for us into the hearts of your human creatures. Even if those human creatures do not acknowledge you, your love for us still shines through. We ask your blessing upon all first responders today and ask you to protect them and their families. Help us love people of all nations, races, and creeds, which will bring about the end to wars and terrorism. We ask all this in your peace. Amen.

10 Icon Exhibition Saint Anthony Chapel Gift Shop View a collection of various religious icons in the Chapel Gift Shop Now through September 30th An exhibition of hand written icons is on display at the St. Anthony gift shop. Many ask the question: Is an icon painted, or written? That may seem an odd question, because as any sensible person can see, icons are painted; they are paint applied to a surface of some kind. Why, then, does such a question even arise? The answer lies in the usage by many Englishspeaking neo-eastern Orthodox of a kind of affected jargon in referring to icons. They will say one writes an icon rather than paints it. That is because Russian has one word with a double meaning, and one must know the context to know whether one is writing a letter or painting a picture. English, however, has distinct words for these two actions. We write a letter, but we paint a picture. Next Weeks bulletin will feature photos from our Parish Picnic! Thanks to all who helped to make this fun event possible.

11 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 8 & 9, 2018 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Because the deaf man in today s gospel recognized his disability, he could seek help from Jesus. Deafness abounds in families: in our children (Oh dad, not that again ) in parents ( It is just a stage ) and in spouses ( Are you listening? ). Before Jesus can enter your home and heal, you must first recognize your deafness. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In today s Gospel we hear how Jesus makes the deaf hear and the mute speak! In living the gospel, we must open our ears to hear and recognize all the everyday opportunities for making God s presence known especially to those who are poor and suffering. On September 9, the Church also celebrates the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are suffering. Help suffering families contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can make God s presence known to those who are suffering and poor?
