3 GOSPEL MEDITATION 4th SUNDAY OF EASTER "Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture." Jesus uses the image of a gate today to help us understand how we are to relate to him. He is our path to "pasture," in other words, to the peace and prosperity that we long for. He shows us the way to find all that we need right there before us. Some people, however, may think that it's better to avoid the trouble of finding the gate and thus choose to enter another way instead. But Jesus says, "Whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber." Although this is all cast in the gentle terms of an analogy about sheep, the message is actually rather stern. Jesus is telling us that if we don't follow him, we are taking the wrong course of action. He is not suggesting a kind of relativistic principle that says, "Following me is one of many good options." No. He is telling us that in order to "have life and have it more abundantly," we must follow the path that goes by way of Christ. This isn't always the easiest path to follow. It might mean taking the long way around a situation instead of a shortcut. It might mean waiting a little while to get to that pasture instead of hopping the fence and finding it on our own terms. Insisting on using the gate may also make us look like fools to those around us. But to be truly faithful followers of Jesus, we need to trust that his way is the best way. We need to trust that, by letting him lead, we will ultimately end up in the best possible pasture. In our culture, it is becoming less and less popular to believe in one true religion, but as Christians we know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Thirteen Tuesday Novena The Annual Thirteen Tuesday Novena in honor of St. Anthony of Padua has begun and will continue through June 6th. This will be week # 9. Mass and Novena are held at 8:30 a.m. Novena and Benediction are held at 7:30 p.m. This Novena has helped many in their time of need. Second Collection This Weekend for Trinity Dome at the Basilica of the National Shrine This weekend our parish will participate in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, before its 100th anniversary. Also known as America s Catholic Church, the National Shrine has been a century in the making, built by and for the faithful of our great nation in honor of our Blessed Mother, the patroness of the United States. Become a part of Mary s Shrine and help to bring our church to completion! For more information, please visit: Plenary Indulgence Opportunity for the Fatima Centennial This year is the 100th anniversary year of the apparitions at Fatima. To celebrate this the Holy Father has extended a Plenary Indulgence on the 13th of each month from May 13, 2017 to October 13, There are three ways to gain the indulgence: 1st) By making a Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal. 2nd) Any of the pious faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church on the 13th of each month from May to October, 2017 and there devotedly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. St. Anthony Chapel has a statue of Our Lady of Fatima in the front left of the Chapel near the communion rail. 3rd) Those who because of age, illness, or other serious cause, are unable to get around well, can pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the anniversary celebrations on the 13th of the month between May and October They must also offer up to our merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in their lives. In all three cases, those seeking an indulgence must pray for the intentions of the Holy Father and also pray an Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. The usual conditions of receiving the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Eucharist within a reasonable amount of time also apply.
