3 GOSPEL MEDITATION Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture December 31, 2017 The Holy Family "When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned... to their own town of Nazareth." Mary and Joseph were faithful Jews who followed the norms of their religion. Today's Gospel describes the event we call "The Presentation." Jesus' parents, like every Jewish family, presented their infant son to the Lord in a formal ceremony at the temple in Jerusalem. Having done what their religious rites required (and having heard the prophetic words of Simeon and Anna), Mary and Joseph returned home. It was back in their native region of Galilee, amidst the daily routine of domestic life, that Jesus "grew and became strong, filled with wisdom." As Christians, we too consecrate our children to the Lord when we have them baptized in the Church. Seeing our children receive this sacrament of initiation is always a moment of great joy and hope as we anticipate the life that lies ahead for them, both on earth and in eternity. But the baptism of a baby is only the beginning of this journey towards heaven. In truth, the little daily details, the simple living of family life in our own home paves the way for our children to reach their eternal home. And so it was with the Holy Family. Jesus' childhood, his formation and development took place not primarily amidst the public drama of the temple, but in the quiet privacy of his home. How important this home was, where his parents raised him in their faith and helped him live in such a way that "the favor of God was upon him." May we too, in our homes and our families, remember that although our mission may be lived out in very small moments, taken together they have an eternal significance. Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention for January Evangelization Religious Minorities in Asia: That Christians, and other religious minorities in Asian countries, may be able to practice their faith in full freedom. Happy New Year! Fr. Jim Orr, Fr. Jim Garvey, Deacon Greg and the entire parish staffs would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year. We pray that this will be a good year filled with many blessings for all! Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Angela Merici at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, January 7th at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For January it will be St. Angela Merici, whose feast day is January 27th. Hours for the Holidays The Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, January 1st. St. Anthony Chapel will be closed on December 31st & January 1st. New Year s Day Mass Schedule The feast day for Mary, The Mother of God is on January 1st and is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year. All are welcome to worship with us on New Year s Day at the 8:30 am Mass at St. Anthony s Chapel. There are no Masses scheduled for Sunday evening on December 31st. Have a safe and Happy New Year! To find out more about this mission, visit chimbotefoundation.org Mary, the Holy Mother of God This solemnity is a rather recent addition to the cycle of seasons, Sundays, and feasts in our liturgical year. We have Pope Paul VI to thank for the 1974 enshrining of the devotion to Mary into our calendar on January 1. It is also a day in our calendar as a World Day for Peace. Let us pray... God of heaven and earth, you came to us and took our earthly flesh through the gift of Mary's yes. She is our Mother in faith, as she is your earthly mother. We are thankful beyond our ability to thank you for the gift of her Son as our brother and savior. Through her self-giving, we have been reconciled to you. Bless us as we begin this New Year and endow us with the desire and ability to create a world of peace. We ask all this, through the intercession of Mary to you, one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen Sanctuary Candle Request Seven day Sanctuary Candles: $20 For: By: Week Desired: Please include $20 with this request and drop off at either parish rectory.

5 St. Vincent de Paul Society Members of St. Vincent DePaul Society want to thank our many parishioners who supported our ministry throughout this past year. Your support helped to ease the burden for the least of your neighbors within the parishes of Most Holy Name of Jesus and St. Aloysius. Relief from sudden misfortune often due to illness or injury was given due to your sacrificial contribution. We want to pass on to you the grateful thanks and praise your neighbors shared with us. Your generosity is gratefully appreciated. Our prayer is that you and your family receive a hundredfold Blessings of God in this New Year. Ladies of Charity Your Ladies of Charity are busy this Christmas season visiting with the shut ins from both parishes. These Christmas reindeer were made with a bar of soap and a ton of love. We are planning some great things for 2018, including the annual Mass of Anointing and also a Blood Drive on March 24th. If you would like to join, or for more info, call Donna Bodnar at Catholic Community Food Bank The Catholic Community Food Bank continues to serve the needs of those in our community. The 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to noon at Most Holy Name Church Hall is the designated day for distributions. Tuesday, January 16th is the next distribution date. The Holy Family The bible tells us very little about the family life of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as they formed their home in Nazareth. We know that Jesus was presented in the temple in accordance with the custom of the law, that he grew strong and was filled with wisdom, and that he stayed behind at the temple in Jerusalem to discourse with the elders and scholars of the law. Much else is left to the tradition of our faith and to our imagination. The Holy Family was certainly unconventional, composed of a virgin mother, a child conceived by the Holy Spirit who is the Son of God, and a foster father who loved the child as if He was his own. Yet, we hold them up as the example of family life for us who seek to love those God has placed in our lives. The Holy Family also becomes our inspiration as we form a family of faith in our parishes. While our faith communities will undergo change as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, the work of building up the family of the Church will continue in earnest. May the example and intercession of the Holy Family support us in this important work. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. Call the parish office to find our more , ext. 0 St. Vincent de Paul Society Helps our neighbors with utility and rental assistance and also emergency needs. Volunteer 1 week per month Ladies of Charity Visits with shut ins and assists the St. Vincent de Paul society with home visits. Make crafts and smile makers for shut ins and those who are ill.
