3 From the desk of Fr. Jim There s a lot to talk about here At the MHN Focus Group, a $54,000 deficit was noted in the parish snapshot. Now I knew MHN did not have such a deficit so I called the Diocesan CFO and we had a discussion and they discovered that in fact I was right and the Parish Snapshot was corrected. MHN has been paying bills on time and in good order. Just to address any rumblings at St. Al s, the Facilities report has been corrected to reflect things as they are. Additionally, there was a hot rumor going around that I was creating an Endowment for St. Al s. No I am not. I have done some very preliminary discussions about creating one for St. Anthony Chapel, but we are nowhere close to any decisions. On June 13th we open the 150th anniversary year of MHN Parish with the celebration of St. Anthony Chapel s 125th anniversary of its completion and the Death of Fr. Mollenger. Bp. Winter will Celebrate Mass at 7:30pm. There is a dinner preceding the Mass at 6pm. Tickets cost $25 and are available on Tuesdays after Mass and Novena or though Carole Brueckner On June 25th at the 11am Mass we will kick off the 125th anniversary year of St. Aloysius Parish with the celebration of our Patronal Feast day. A light Lunch will follow. On August 27 the next moment of our mutual anniversary celebrations will be a parish picnic at Millvale Riverfront Park for both parishes. The plans look to provide a lot of good fun and eating for all ages. Keep your eye on the bulletin for more details. Jim Thirteen Tuesday Novena The Annual Thirteen Tuesday Novena in honor of St. Anthony of Padua will conclude this Tuesday. Mass and Novena are held at 8:30 a.m. Novena and Benediction are held at 7:30 p.m. This Novena has helped many in their time of need. St. Anthony Chapel Join us in celebrating the glorious Feast Day of St. Anthony of Padua and the 125th Anniversary of the Chapel on June 13, Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel at 8:30 am. At 7:30 pm Bishop William Winter will be the celebrant.. A dinner (reservation only) in honor of St. Anthony will be held in Most Holy Name school hall at 6:00 pm on June 13th. Tickets for the dinner are $25 per person and the menu includes: Tavern Ham, Chicken, Potato, Vegetable, Spring Salad, Fruit, Beverage & Dessert. Reservations are required for the dinner. For tickets or more information, please call Carole at Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of Saint John the Baptist at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, June 4 at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For June, it will be the relic of Saint John the Baptist whose feast day is June 24th. We will have a Baccalaureate mass on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the 4:00pm mass at St. Aloysius Church. All High School and College graduates are invited to attend with your families. Sacrament of the Sick at St. Anthony s Chapel The Sacrament of the Sick will be offered during a special Mass on Sunday, June 4th at 1:00 pm at St. Anthony s Chapel. The administration of the Sacrament of the Sick in this context is offered for those Catholics who are experiencing physical ailments of a serious nature: those who will be undergoing surgery for serious reasons, the elderly who have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present, those who are battling serious illnesses and have not been anointed recently, and children who have reached the age of reason and are seriously ill. The Ladies of Charity from Most Holy Name & St. Aloysius Parishes will offer bottles of Holy Water to take home for those who are attending. Catholic Community Food Bank The Catholic Community Food Bank continues to serve the needs of those in our community. The 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to noon, will be the designated day for distributions. Tuesday, June 20th is the next distribution date. CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: Is it true that the feast of Pentecost, the celebration of the descent of the Spirit upon the followers of Jesus, was a Jewish pilgrimage festival? Answer: Pentecost is only mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles, written by the author of Luke's Gospel. John's Gospel speaks of Jesus breathing the Spirit upon his followers on Easter Sunday. Luke in Acts is the only one who unpacks the Easter events of Jesus' passion, death, resurrection, ascension, and the sending forth of the Spirit in a period of fifty days The Jews had three pilgrimage feasts--passover, celebrating the Exodus from Egypt; Shavuot, or festival of Weeks, celebrating the giving of the law on Mount Sinai; and Sukkot, the harvest festival of Booths, commemorating the forty years of wandering in the desert. Shavuot celebrated the central covenant event in Jewish life--the giving of the law to Moses on Mount Sinai. The mighty wind, the shaking of the house in which the followers were gathered, along with the tongues of fire all reflect elements surrounding the giving of the law to Moses in the Book of Exodus. Luke was imaging this very backdrop and scenario in this significant event of the community being gifted with the Spirit. As the Torah was the way to God for Jews, so Jesus' Spirit was the guide, power, and path to God for his followers.

It s how we create emotional distance. Permanent distancing is lethal and prevents the PEACE Jesus offers you today. Their social studies classes were timed to coincide with their school field trip to Gettysburg, and the results were a good combination of fun and learning. Several of the guides spoke nicely of the academic knowledge and polite behavior of our 7th and 8th grade students. In reading/literature class there has been no let up either. We finished the novel Of Mice and Men, followed that up with a viewing and discussion of the academy award nominated movie, and then started our next novel, George Orwell s Animal Farm. The students have been working well and they are talking about their last weeks at Northside Catholic School. Troy Hill Citizens General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 7th from 7:00-9:00 pm at Most Holy Name School Hall.
