3 GOSPEL MEDITATION January 21, rd Sunday in Ordinary Time "So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him." What did Zebedee think about all of this? His sons and his partners, James and John, suddenly left their post and followed Jesus. So there he stood in the boat with a crew of employees, but not one of his sons. We can't help but wonder whether Zebedee was in favor of this promise that his heirs would become "fishers of men." Most likely, this event was the cause of some familial tension. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus instructs us to love and serve others for the love of God. But the Lord also makes it clear that our devotion to him is meant to trump our devotion to anything-or anyone-else. For our part, we are called to allow this divine allegiance to exist in those we love, even when it means a sacrifice for us as well. Parents for example, like Zebedee, are called to encourage their children to follow the Lord's call. A son or daughter's vocation to religious life certainly exemplifies this kind of sacrifice for a parent who might have had a different plan in mind. But in truth every son and daughter has a vocation from God and parents have the opportunity to support and assist their children as they seek to hear and follow God's special plan for their lives. We don't know for sure how Zebedee responded to the vocation of his sons, but we know that James and John were counted among the Twelve Apostles and that their devotion and dedication helped to spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Regardless of what he might have thought as he stood in that boat, we can be quite sure that looking back now, Zebedee can rejoice heartily in the choice of his sons to leave their nets and follow Christ. I am very glad to have served here in priestly ministry for the past nine years. As I go forward into retirement know that I take many happy memories with me and that I will continue to hold you and your loved ones in my heart and in my prayers. May God Bless You! Fr. Jim Garvey Second Collection Today The Pittsburgh Diocese is home to two nationally recognized educational programs for children with special needs: St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (formerly known as The DePaul Institute). A special collection to benefit these two organizations will be taken this weekend at all Parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services to their students and help to forever improve the lives of them and their families. Holy Hour on January 22nd We will have a Holy Hour to pray that the dignity of all human life may be upheld. This will include hymns, silent prayer and the Rosary for Life, and will conclude with Benediction. Both parishes are encouraged to gather at St. Aloysius Church on Monday, January 22nd from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm to pray for this important intention, on the day our Catholic bishops have designated as the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.

Though the weather has been rough these last two weekends, things are still moving forward on the CCD front. We submitted $ to The Children s Hospital Free Care Fund and we collected 843 items for the food bank. A huge Thank You to everyone who contributed. On January 15th our 8th graders attended their retreat for Confirmation, which will be held on April 5th. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare to receive this sacrament. CCD will host a pancake breakfast on Sunday, February 11th, from 8:00-11:00 am. All monies raised will go to support the Diocesan Missionary work in Chimbote. Each class will also sponsor a themed basket to be raffled. Please come and support us in this endeavor. Stay warm and safe! Catholic Community Food Bank The Catholic Community Food Bank continues to serve the needs of those in our community. The 3rd Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am to noon at Most Holy Name Church Hall is the designated day for distributions. Tuesday, February 20th is the next distribution date. Please note that if you would like to make a monetary donation to the food bank, your check must be made out to The Catholic Community Food Bank of Troy Hill. Ladies of Charity Blood Drive Mark your calendars for the Ladies of Charity Blood Drive on Saturday March 24 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Most Holy Name School Hall Any questions call Terry at or Amy or visit Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Paul Miki at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, February 4th at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For February, it will be the relic of Saint Paul Miki whose feast day is February 6th. Yes, it is even upon the undocumented resident alien who has no voice but ours. As followers of Jesus Christ, we are all called to protect the voiceless. Let us pray... Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils the breath of life. You are the One to whom we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular position of protecting those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure. Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice in the public square. With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
