3 GOSPEL MEDITATION July 8, 2018 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time If you have been closely following the Sunday readings, today's Gospel could sound a bit like a broken record. Four weeks ago, the Gospel told of Jesus visiting his home of Nazareth and being poorly received by his family members. Jesus had attracted a large crowd as he preached, and his concerned relatives came to bring him home. Jesus, they thought, was out of his league. Today Jesus takes things further. He returns to Nazareth. Rather than preaching from his house, he enters the synagogue. He speaks eloquently. The listeners acknowledge that "wisdom has been given him" and recognize the "mighty deeds wrought by his hands," but it is too much for them to bear. "Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary?" The listeners know his whole clan, his male and female relatives. Jesus as carpenter was acceptable. Even Jesus as fringe preacher was interesting enough to draw a crowd. But Jesus as authoritative teacher is too much. "They took offense at him." As Christians, we have known the truth of Jesus' identity since we were first introduced to him. He is fully human and fully divine. He is the second person of the Trinity. It could be easy to look down on these 1st century listeners for their lack of faith. But where do we expect to learn our own lessons? The more we age, the easier it is to believe we understand the world and how it works. We have experience with people, with the Church, with politics, and with the affairs of daily living. We have developed criteria for first impressions. We categorize. Today we remember that the Christian life requires humility. Jesus' listeners have an expectation of how things should be, and their lack of faith causes doubt in others. "He was not able to perform any mighty deeds there." Do your assumptions limit your perspective? Who can you learn from that you did not expect? At Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Donald Angeletti Therese Gottermeier Please pray for the consolation of their loved ones. 4 Ladies of Charity Backpack Drive When the Ladies of Charity delivered the socks from our very successful sock drive to Providence Connections, a ministry on the North Side involved with at risk families with children, we asked the Director if there was anything else we could do for these children. She asked if we could sponsor a drive for backpacks for the children. This would include children of all ages. In August, they try to help the families with back-to-school supplies and the Director noted they never have enough backpacks. We will have a bin in each church beginning the weekend of July 7th and ending on Sunday, July 29th. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to Ladies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. Look for the BACKPACK BIN in church beginning July 7th! Thank you! FAITH SHARING: Women and Men Sharing Faith and Hope Our next meeting is Monday, July 9 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Aloysius. Please read Chapter Eight, Accompanying Discerning & Integrating Weakness of Pope Francis The Joy of Love. Save the Date - Ladies Retreat Ladies, please keep in mind that the Ladies Retreat held at St. Paul Retreat Center will be held on September 14, 15 & 16. Baby Bottle Campaign Please return the baby bottles as soon as possible. Thanks for your support. Pope Francis Monthly Prayer Intention for July Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry That priests, who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests. Is He Not the Carpenter, the Son of Mary? In today s Gospel, Jesus is unable to perform many miracles in his hometown because of the lack of faith of the people there. They fail to trust in him as the Son of God because they cannot see past him as the son of Mary and the carpenter. Instead of seeing with the eyes of faith they let the limits of their human sight get the better of them. Do we often fail to see with the eyes of faith? Are there times where we limit God s work in our lives and in the world because we are unable to trust in the power of his love? To see with the eyes of faith allows us to recognize God s work in the world, in the Church and in others for us, and in us for others. There are no limits to what God is capable of doing through our lives, for nothing is impossible with God. On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to grow in trust of the amazing things that God can do in and through us for the good of the Church and of our communities. Don t limit the great work of God. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

11 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 7 & 8, 2018 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Today s gospel is so familiar, it hurts! The home town folks couldn t accept the presence of God in Jesus. After all, they had watched him grow up. We can easily make the same mistake if we don t see God present in the ordinary routines of our family. The Lord be with you is a statement of fact. Believe it. Live it. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In today s Gospel the people ask : How is it such miraculous deeds are accomplished by his hands? Because of your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul many miraculous deeds are accomplished for the poor. This week put a gift in the St. Vincent de Paul poor box, knowing that through your kindness someone who is suffering will be touched by God in a miraculous way. Masstimes.org. Traveling this summer?
