3 GOSPEL MEDITATION June 24, 2018 The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance? Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be? Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit." As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But today, he is a child, an infant newly born. On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement, the violin lessons and soccer practices? every parental effort is subjected to the decisions of the child them self. Even children on a sure track by high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents - - that our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them, they meet Jesus Christ. Peter s Pence Collection Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds to respond with emergency financial assistance to those throughout the world who suffer from war, oppression, disease and natural disasters. It is a powerful way for Catholics around the world to assist those most in need. Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Thomas, Apostle at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, July 1st at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For July, it will be the relic of Saint Thomas, Apostle. For more information, please visit the Chapel s website saintanthonyschapel.org Golden Wedding Celebration The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its Golden Wedding Celebration for couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. A special Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Zubik on Sunday, October 7, at 2:30 PM at St. Paul Cathedral. A light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. All couples celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary any time this year and wishing to receive an invitation to this event should call the rectory or drop a note in the collection basket no later than Sunday, August 5.

4 Ladies of Charity Backpack Drive When the Ladies of Charity delivered the socks from our very successful sock drive to Providence Connections, a ministry on the North Side involved with at risk families with children, we asked the Director if there was anything else we could do for these children. She asked if we could sponsor a drive for backpacks for the children. This would include children of all ages. In August, they try to help the families with back-to-school supplies and the Director noted they never have enough backpacks. We will have a bin in each church beginning the weekend of July 7th and ending on Sunday, July 29th. If you are unable to shop, a monetary donation can be made and the Ladies of Charity will shop for you. Cash or checks payable to Ladies of Charity can be dropped into the bin. For You Will Go Before the Lord to Prepare the Way Today in the Church we celebrate the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, the great forerunner who was sent to announce the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ and prepare the way for him to fulfill his work in the world. John the Baptist never sought to put the attention on himself, but always pointed the way to Jesus, whom the prophets had foretold would come to save God s people. He was a faithful instrument of God who desired to decrease so that the power and love of Jesus at work in the lives of his people could increase. Since Christ has already come into the world we can t be his forerunners, but we can prepare the way for him to enter into the hearts and lives of others. The witness of our prayer, the example of our lives and the encouragement of our words for others can turn their hearts to greater trust in God and his grace at work for them. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may we seek to prepare the way for others, and be open to the ways in which they will work to make ready the path for God in our hearts. Young or Retired Men Needed for Rummage House The Rummage House is in need of some volunteers (young men or retired men) to help put up and take down tents on sale weekends. This is a temporary volunteer opportunity that is a huge need for the house. Setting up the tents is usually done on Wednesday before the sale and the tents are taken down on Sunday at the conclusion of the sale and then stored for the next months sale. 11 The Nativity of St. John the Baptist June 23 & 24, 2018 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Just as the apostles in today s gospel were amazed at the power of Jesus so our children are amazed at our lack of fear of dark rooms or monsters in closets or under beds. As the apostles depended on Jesus, children depend on us to restore quiet to their lives. Getting out of bed at night to quiet a child s fears is the stuff of holiness. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In the Gospel today, we celebrate the birth of John the Baptist and everyone pondered the question: What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. This month, the hand of the Lord has been acting through you as your gifts, to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brought his love and care to the poor by assisting many families with utility and rental help.
