Facilitators: Rita and Deacon Dan Any questions: drguinaugh@hawaiiantel.net Living Catholic in the 808: Encountering the Marginalized Christ Reflections by Pope Francis Reprinted from the CRS Rice Bowl Community Reflection The Christian ideal will always be a summons to overcome suspicion, habitual mistrust, fear of losing our privacy, all the defensive attitudes which today s world imposes on us. Many try to escape from others and take refuge in the comfort of their privacy or in a small circle of close friends, renouncing the realism of the social aspect of the Gospel. For just as some people want a purely spiritual Christ, without flesh and without the cross, they also want their interpersonal relationships provided by sophisticated equipment, by screens and systems which can be turned on and off on command. Meanwhile, the Gospel tells us constantly to run the risk of a face-to-face encounter with others, with their physical presence which challenges us, with their pain and their pleas, with their joy which infects us in our close and continuous interaction. True faith in the incarnate Son of God is inseparable from self-giving, from membership in the community, from service, from reconciliation with others. The Joy of the Gospel, 88 Question: Fear, prejudice, ignorance, uncertainty these are some of the things that keep us from encountering the marginalized Christ. Reflect on what prevents you from going to the margins. How can you overcome these obstacles? Prayer: God of all people, inspire us to go to the margins and struggle with injustice. 2

3 Scrutiny s For Kay and for all of Us. Our beautiful Season of Lent is a time when we are all able to practice the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and works of charity, that we have hopefully been doing for the rest of the year. Now, these forty days of Lent, are opportunities where we can show the Lord that we have been taking seriously the gospel message, of conversion and prayer, to heart. By design, Lent has us begin by once again remembering the temptation of Jesus (First Sunday) and His transfiguration (Last Sunday). Now, this weekend, we deal with our identification with Christ and our seeking eternal life. A special segment of Lent are the three Sundays prior to Easter where both our Elect (Kay) and each of us are given the opportunity to hear the gospel texts of the Samaritan woman at the well, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus. Each of these scriptures, in order, contain the symbolism of water (the well), light (blindness), and life (being brought back to life). This symbolism is to be both remembered and carried to the Easter Vigil celebration where they are repeated: baptismal immersion (water), which takes place at night(darkness), in the presence of the community with lighted candles (light) and welcomes Kay (newly baptized) into the life of God in each of us through Christ (new life). Something that we need to be clear on is the meaning of the Ritual of the Scrutiny s. This is not to be understood as a process where we grill Kay either on her past life or understanding of everything that the church teaches or stands for. If we did this for her, then we should subject ourselves to the same testing. A modified version, of seeking to see if all of us understand what we proclaim and believe, comes when we renew our baptismal promises. A better understanding of a scrutiny is a prayer prayed for our Elect (Kay) offering community support as she seeks to be part of the church here in our parish. To affirm this pledge, we will give her three symbols that represent the essentials of the faith that we embrace a copy of the Creed, the Lord Prayer, and the Book of the Gospels. May these gifts represent our faith that we wish to share with her now and always. On the way to Holy Week/Easter, 3

4 CATHOLIC CHARITIES HAWAI I On behalf of Catholic Charities Hawai i, mahalo to the parishioners of Holy Trinity for their continued support of our senior clients during the Christmas holidays. The 2017 Angel Tree resulted in 75 gifts that brought Holiday Cheer to our seniors many of whom are without family and living on limited budgets. This would not have been possible without you spearheading the Angel Tree and the caring hearts of many others! Sharing comments from a couple of our clients upon opening their gifts. A female client who lives alone in affordable senior housing received a Ross s gift card: Thank you so much for the generous gift card! There are items I need, but would be difficult for someone to pick out for me, so a gift card is just what I need! Thank you so very much and may God continue to bless you in 2018! A male client who receives chore worker services via his Medicaid plan had his wish for cleaning supplies fulfilled. Thank you for the great cleaning supplies. My helper can really use them to clean! We pray to the Lord For those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes for safety or better opportunities. We pray to the Lord.. ENCOUNTER SAFIATA In Burkina Faso, we encounter Safiata, a mother, grandmother and farmer who relies on the money she makes from her crops to put her children through school. How can our purchases this Lent support farmers and artisans? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? This is a very special time when comfort is offered by the parish family a, particularly in providing a joyous mass at our church. Currently we have several parishioners who are involved with this ministry, but we need several more to complement their efforts. Please consider joining our Bereavement Ministry. We will provide the necessary training and several things that you should consider are: *most funerals take place on weekday mornings. *this is a ministry where you work as a team. *there is no need to speak in public, you serve as a support to the family at church. *qualifications should include: a desire to faithfully celebrate Resurrection and new life at a Funeral Mass. 7 Stewardship Corner Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Lesson 88 The Presentation The parents of Jesus took Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (Luke 2:22). So why did Joseph and Mary bring Jesus to the Temple? He did not need to be redeemed, but rather came into the world to redeem us! Perhaps He did so as an act of submission to His Father s will. When we come to Mass, let us consider our offering to the Lord. What we bring may be small in comparison to Jesus life, but our gift will bring great joy to God.
