3 It s not about us it s all about Him! Following Jesus is not for a few chosen ones, but for everyone. Yes, discipleship entails being called by Jesus and then following Him wholeheartedly. But there s something we have to consider and avoid at all costs: elitism. That s the trap that our gospel-disciples fell into in todays scripture. John, and for once it wasn t Peter, speaks his mind and reveals that his intentions were not in line with Jesus. He says to Jesus that, we tried to stop him (an outsider) because he does not follow us. This non-disciple exorcist was doing what Jesus was asking his disciples to do: to relieve people s misery, to call on the Lords name, and to give God the glory. This man was doing this, but for John and the others, he wasn t trained or following Jesus. They weren t satisfied because this man wasn t one of them. They were starting to feel that they were the only ones who were trained and given the inside story about being a disciple of Jesus. Jesus doesn t agree with John and the others and goes on to say that they should not prevent him for there is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name, who can at the same time speak ill of all. Instead of approving of their reactions, Jesus tells them to find and accept help wherever they can. Whoever is not against us is for us! Considering the present situation of our current world, it might serve us well to consider how welcoming we are as a nation, community and church. Jesus taught His followers to think about their lives, their reasons for following Him, their identities as disciples, and their real vision of the Kingdom they were called to live and probably die for. Liturgical musician, Marty Haugen has a song entitled: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome, unless you disagree with us. There needs to be room for everyone and we can t lose sight that it s not our ways that need to be followed, but His way.

4 Stewardship Corner Lesson 118 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Humble Hearts Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Matt 23:12) Many of us wear crosses or miraculous medals. These medals are blessed and remind us to keep Mary and Jesus close to us. What if we wore larger and larger medals or crosses; would this, in inself, make us holier? The Pharisees started a type of holiness contest by wearing larger and larger phylacteries in a vain attempt to show their piety. The best way to guide our hearts is with prayer and service. Jesus doesn t care about the size of what s around our necks, He cares about what s in our hearts. Let s practice stewardship of prayer, focusing on others, and sharing our gifts in order to grow our hearts and bring us closer to the Lord. 5 Annual Holy Trinity Church Food Festival Sunday, October 14th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm Scrip will be available for two more weekends before and after all masses. They are $1.00 each and tastes will be $2 and $3 each. Scrip can be purchased with cash and/or checks only. Scrip pick up will be at 3:00 pm and food and drink booths will be open after Father has blessed the booths around 3:30pm. Last serving for food will be at 5:30P Donations of Water is needed! These can be brought to the church office and/or back of church before the event or to the Gym on the day of the event. Any crafters can add their items to the Crafters/Cottage Store area. These items can be dropped off at the church office. Donations of baked goods, pickled veggies, chutney, hot chili pepper water, etc. are needed. These can be brought to the gym the day of the event. Please label all items and price them appropriately. Also mark any baked items containing nuts clearly. We will have Portuguese, Italian, German, Irish, Hawaiian, Cajun, Chinese, Japanese, Korean booths, beer and wine, Malasadas and a Dessert booth paired with specialty coffee/tea so please buy your scrip with these wonderful tastes in mind. Mahalo and We look forward to seeing you on 10/14/18. Save the Date and buy scrip now! Catholic Christians are a singing people! The music ministry is an extremely important ministry in the church. We support assembly singing as well as leading the sung responses that are not typically sung by all. We are a welcoming group and we extend an open invitation to join the choir. We offer musical education to refine the abilities of those who participate. As a side benefit, many health experts point out singing as a means of promoting physical and emotional health. The music ministry as a body also provides support and community. Won t you join us? Try it out with no obligation. If you decide to sing with us during Advent and Christmas, our Directors Ken and Trissa, are offering a catered lunch to the one who attends rehearsal the most. Rehearsals are Tuesday at 6:30 in the church. We hope to see you there.

7 LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS, OH MY! Well, maybe not. But we do welcome Dogs, Cats, Fish, Birds, Lizards and Mice. PET BLESSING Sunday, October 7 th at 2pm We will be celebrating the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi with a Pet Blessing on Sunday October 7 th at 2:00 pm in front of Makai House, behind the school building. St Francis is the Church s patron saint of animals and the environment. Father Mike will bless each pet individually. Feel free to bring photos of your pet if it is difficult for them to attend the blessing. If your pet is not especially friendly, please keep them on a leash or in a cage so other pets and their humans are not injured. We say this with utmost love and affection for all God s creatures great and small. Please encourage fellow parishioners to attend as this is a wonderful way to meet other parishioners in a fun, outdoor setting.
