3 Is your family trying to be a holy family? We may call them holy, but we also have a glimpse of holy imperfection. It s a typical family situation, a child wanders away from his parents and they presume him to be with their extended clan somewhere else in the caravan. Their lost son causes them to leave the safety of their travelling companions and return to the place where they saw him last, back in the city of Jerusalem. Once in the city it took them three days to locate him, in the temple with the teachers, listening to them and asking questions. Although Mary and Joseph were astonished, they scold him by asking; Son, why did you do this to us? His response sounds like he was answering back; Why were you looking for me? This glimpse into a day-in-the-life of the Holy Family shows us that things weren t always perfect in their family life. Jesus was born into a human family and it had its ups and downs, setbacks and successes, good days and bad. Sound like my family yours too? We have virtually no information about Jesus early years where He developed as a child, youth, and young adult. St Luke s gospel-story gives us a snapshot of one incident that captures the essence that he was born into, lived and developed in a normal human setting. In other words, Jesus Christ is truly human just like all of us. He dealt with day to day life and possessed unique insight into the workings of God. We all are members of families and claim membership in the family of the church. As a matter of fact, that s how the church wants us to see ourselves, as images of the larger church but in miniature. Our families are to be smaller or domestic churches. And just as there are many parish churches there are many households with various expressions. Some families are made up of married spouses with children, and these hold a special place among the people of God. This does not mean that other kinds of families cannot be holy as well. Each of us must reflect Gods love as we experience it. As we consider the Holy Family lets also appreciate our own families and strive to do the best that we can to emulate their behavior and attitudes. All families can become Holy Families, we just must stick together with one another. And let s pray for any families experiencing difficulties, especially at this time of the year. We miss you all; and God in His wisdom is putting us right to work by telling all the new people we are meeting about Holy Trinity Church and the wonderful people that makes our parish a true family. If you have a 4 hour block of time (8:30-12:30 or 12:30-4:30) during the week that you would like to volunteer and help us out, please call Mary Vrabel in the office at or Mary at mvrabel@rcchawaii.org. You would be greeting visitors to our church office, answering the phones and assisting with some simple clerical work. We will train you. All you need is a smile and a desire to serve the Lord. Saint of the Day: December 30th Egwin of Evesham Born in the 7th century of royal blood, Egwin entered a monastery, and was enthusiastically received by royalty, clergy, and the people as the bishop of Worcester, England. As a bishop he was known as a protector of orphans and the widowed and a fair judge. Egwin founded Evesham Abbey, which became one of the great Benedictine houses of medieval England. It was dedicated to Mary, who had reportedly made it known to Egwin just where a church should be built in her honor. Egwin died at the abbey on December 30, 717. Following his burial many miracles were attributed to him: The blind could see, the deaf could hear, the sick were healed. Correcting abuses and faults is never an easy job, not even for a bishop. Egwin attempted to correct and build up the clergy in his diocese and it earned him the wrath of his priests. When we are called to correct someone or some group, plan on opposition, but also know that it might be the right thing to do.

5 Stewardship Corner Lesson 131 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Honor Thy Father and Mother Take care of your father when his is old. (Sirach 3:12) We ve unwrapped our presents and opened our gifts; our guests have left; but what is left is the best gift of all...our family. The ones we hold dear, until Christmas next year. As we remember the past and dwell on the future, we notice the young and the old amongst our family. This week we celebrate the Holy Family and hear Sirach s words; very meaningful for some...as many of us are caring for our elders and extended families. A burden at times, yes; but blessings can outweigh our burden. The Holy Family fled under King Herod; difficult days for Joseph and Mary; and we too have difficult days, tending to our family. Sometimes we might feel the presence of the Lord walking alongside in support of our efforts, financial concerns or struggles. At other times, we might feel satisfaction in returning the gift of sacrifice once given to us by others; those who walked before. Let s take Sirach s words to heart as we care for both our immediate family and extended church family, both young and old, with love and open heart, knowing this privilege of honor and respect will come to bless us. 6 The house of Nazareth is a school of prayer where we learn to listen, to meditate, to penetrate the deepest meaning of the manifestation of the Son of God, drawing our example from Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The Holy Family is an icon of the domestic Church, which is called to pray together. The family is the first school of prayer where, from their infancy, children learn to perceive God thanks to the teaching and example of their parents. An authentically Christian education cannot neglect the experience of prayer. If we do not learn to pray in the family, it will be difficult to fill this gap later. I would, then, like to invite people to rediscover the beauty of praying together as a family, following the school of the Holy Family of Nazareth". The Christian family is the first cell of the whole Church. It is the place where we begin the journey toward holiness and become more fully human. The Holy Family of Jesus, Joseph and Mary is not only our model, it is the beginning of the new family of the Church. Our Gospel story today tells us of a family trip which is packed with lessons for those enrolled in the School of Nazareth. In and through the ordinary stuff of daily life we find Jesus and in the encounter discover ourselves. There are no mistakes, no coincidences. All events are blessings given to us to learn from. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross Miracle on Kalanianaole Highway This Christmas Eve at the 5 PM Vigil, a miracle occurred on Kalanianaole Highway at Holy Trinity Church. Nearly 500 parishioners and visitors attended Christmas Vigil and our Parking Ministers managed to get everyone and all their vehicles safely parked on our campus. A special Christmas Blessing to our unsung heroes; Tom Fake, Ken Ishikawa, Derek Wong and George Uyeno and their leader Mike Ishii. Thank you gentlemen and thanks for volunteering again next year.
