August 14, 2016 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Pastor Father Michel Dalton OFM Cap Deacon Steve Kula Deacon Dan Guinaugh EMERGENCY NUMBER PARISH OFFICE: MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of Holy Trinity Catholic Church is to be one with each other and with Christ in the Father so that the Holy Spirit may make Christ known to the world in us through Word and Sacrament, Prayer and service.
HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Possibilities for our Church, or any other Church This week I came across an interesting article that posits that there are many possibilities for a church community. It stated that our church communities have many blessings, a great deal to enjoy and be proud of, and a lot to learn. "Does this sound like a church that you might be attending?" All pastors, and hopefully all parishioners, want their churches to be signs of hope. Yet in many parishes people set out in hope but end up disappointed, dejected, or cynical. What I read, further on in this article, are several interesting ideas and assumptions that parishes might experience in the life of their local church. I share them for your thought and maybe even your action. #1-It's possible to be a church without being defensive and closed minded. Jesus came to tell each of us of the Fathers glory and our individual part in His glorious plan. Each of us is unique, an understatement for sure, and God created us as He wants us. He also wants us to safeguard each persons uniqueness and holiness and respect one another as true brothers and sisters in the Lord. The Holy Spirit can work through us in the parish as well as beyond the church wherever we may find ourselves. #2-It's possible to care for those who are ostracized or in trouble in a way that enhances rather than diminishes the community. Pope Francis has been constantly encouraging all of us to reach out especially to those who just "don't fit" into the categories that society has defined. Looking at Europe we see the plight of thousands of immigrants fleeing their homelands on a path to freedom and peace. Closer to home we, through a program such as Family Promise, have opened the parish to housing needy brothers, sisters, as well as their children for a week of warm hospitality, hot showers, and home cooked meals. Because they were in our midst we can reap the spiritual blessings from caring for those who need an extra dose of tender, loving care. #3-It's possible to be aspirational, financially sustainable, and participatory all at the same time. We have to be careful to not just focus in on one of these aspects...to the detriment of the others. Beauty and brilliance are great, as are fun and friendship, and having enough money to do it again next year. What comes to my mind are the efforts of the Food Fest that you have held in the past and soon once again. From what I have been able to understand this event is held to bring together as many of you as possible for an enjoyable and tasty afternoon...and you have been successful! A creative atmosphere ensures that the true joy of being part of a church that is alive will be remembered for years to come.
#4-It's possible to grow without becoming impersonal. By this I understand that we have to always be a welcoming and inviting church...if not, get ready for the funeral and burial of the community. I believe that we are both of these things...welcoming and inviting. Everyone who arrives at the church for Mass is welcomed at the entrance as well as at the beginning of mass. Visitors or neighbors get the warm welcome that they deserve and need. Perhaps something that we might need to get more pro-active about is welcoming back those who should be sitting in the seats next to you...if it's empty then there is still room and work to be done. #5-We can do unbelievable things together if we start with one another's assets rather than deficits. In a community of fear we begin with our hurts and our stereotypes and find a hundred reasons why we can't do things or why certain types of people don't belong. But if we peel away the labels like not one of us, disabled, shady, loser, suspicious, and instead see qualities like passionate, or committed, excited, interesting, humble, trustworthy, talented, then there's no limit to what a community of hope can do. All of this is only possible if we truly believe that in Christ the future is bigger than the past. Hope and faith go hand-in-hand with a growing dynamic church. Christianity is founded on two convictions: the forgiveness of sins, which maintains that the past can be healed by the Holy Spirit, and everlasting life, which claims our future with Christ has no end. Our church is only 2,000 years old...we are in our infancy...still growing, still believing and praying, and doing all of this as a community of hope. Let's continue the excitement in all that we do and all that we are. Just a few thoughts for your consideration, Fr. Mike Follow-up to my requests in last weeks Bulletin: Two people volunteered to do some writing for our Catholic Herald Articles. One person volunteered to take photo's for us. No one came forward to get a Parish, Pro-Life Committee together...let's see if we can find someone...you?

RCIA at Holy Trinity Church Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Aloha, we the Holy Trinity RCIA Family are here to tell you that we are beginning a new Faith Journey for people who want to become Roman Catholics! RCIA begins on September 11, 2016, at 9am, in the RCIA Room, at our Parish Office. During this Faith Journey, we get to tell some of your family who are non-believers the good news that: There is a God He has a Son, and his son s name is Jesus Christ And Scripture says that If we believe in Him, we will have eternal life. And that means that no one will ever die if we believe in Him! That the Catholic Church is over 2000 years old, and we go all the way back to the Apostles. We get to tell them all about our beautiful Catholic traditions: That there is a great cloud of witnesses, the saints, cheering us on, just like it says in the Book of Revelation! And Mary, the Queen of Peace, is praying for us right now. They have all of you to sit beside in church each week, and will help them if they need help. And that there are always people to turn to wherever they are in the world. We have over 230,000 baptized Catholics in Hawaii alone let alone all over the world. But we need YOU: Your job is to tell your family and friends who aren t Catholics, that Holy Trinity has a fantastic RCIA program that meets each week during the 9:00 Mass for just one hour. Your job is to give them a brochure and tell them they can call the Holy Trinity office for an application form or go online to our website and download a printable application; or see the deacon after Mass for an application. Our job has already started. We re praying for you to use exactly the right words to tell them. God bless each and every one of you! Deacon Steve Kula deaconkula@gmail.com AT HOME WITH THE WORD We have only two weeks to get our order in for At Home with the Word. The deadline is August 16. If you are interested please fill in the form below and return it with your payment to the parish office by August 16. We will be submitting our order that day. The books are $8 each. ************************************************************************************* NAME: ADDRESS: NUMBER OF COPIES: Amount Enclosed:
STEWARDSHIP CORNER STEWARDSHIP AT HOLY TRINITY CHURCH LESSON 10 TITHING Tithing is an Old Testament concept of giving a percent of our income to God. Many faith communities embrace tithing as a 10 percent contribution. Some Parishioners view their tithe based on gratitude rather than a percentage formulation. Tithing might be a beneficial concept for you and your family; your gift to God will never outdo his generosity to you. In this manner, tithing becomes an opportunity not an obligation. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Collection- July 30 and 31- $10,010 August 6 and 7- $9,450 Major Maintenance and Repair August 6th and 7th- $2,690 Thrift Shop July, 28th, 29th and 30th- $ August 4th, 5th and 6th - $ Total Fundraiser to August 8, $14,206.50
