3 A cup of cold water is all it takes Whoever gives even a cup of water to one of these little ones in the name of a discipletruly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward [ Matthew 10:42]. It s interesting that Jesus specifies that the cup of water is to be cold. There are several layers of meaning that He is implying by being so specific. We take for granted cold water because we can usually get some at anytime either from a bottle in the refrigerator, by adding some ice cubes to oiur glass or just sipping from a water fountain. When we go out to eat the first thing that the waitperson serves us is a glass of cold water that usually hasn t been asked for a nd is free of charge. Thinking scripturally we have to understand that for Jesus cold water is a BIG deal. Usually women went to the village well, early in the morning, and got the cold water, filled their jugs, returned home and everyone began their day with a cold drink. As the day went on and the heat began to rise so too did the temperature of the jugs of water. Later in the dayif you were offered a cold drink of water it meant that someone went back to the well, out of their way, to offer you true hospitality. This was a great example of showing care and concern for others just as Jesus implied and intended. The point that He was making is that anything we do for one another is a BIG DEAL. Another layer to explore, to understand this gospel, is to know who these little ones are. They happen to be anyone who gives witness to Jesus, God, and His Holy Spirit in their public lives. He forewarned His followers that the mission might have it challenges but that He would always protect them as he saw fit. He wanted them to know that they would never know what to expect but to always trust Him every step of the way. Jesus also gives the larger population, those non-disciples, a fair warning also. He expects something of them, and us, as well.. ~if you welcome me/you welcome God who sent me. ~if you welcome a prophet/ you receive a prophets reward. ~if you welcome a righteous person/ you receive the same reward a righteous person receives. Our Lord is teaching us that disciples who live a faithful life is all about those trips to the well to fetch a cup of cold water- - - not for ourselves- - but to give to someone else. We are all alike in our thirst. We are all alike in our need. And the only person who can quench that spiritual thirst is the One who offers not just ordinary water but the living water of baptism. It s a simple pattern...he quenches our thirst and we offer others the opportunity to have some of that same water. Doing the same thing for others is, well, really cool. See you at the well, 3

4 Pastoral Council Discussion: State of the Parish At the recent Council meeting a lively discussion was held that centered on different aspects of our parish life. Fr. Mike asked the Council members to share their insights in the following areas: 1-Area of Parish needs. 2-Areas of possible expansion of services/ministries. 3-Where, or to what, are we devoting our: Time? Resources? Energy? 4- As a Pastoral Council member how have you a) communicated to other parishioners? b) listened to others and brought their needs to our meetings? c) encouraged others to get involved in our community? At the June 17th meeting a large portion of the meeting was devoted to looking at the topic, Area of Growth. Members were encouraged that Fr. Mike will include a Young Adult Representative on the next Council. Discussion looked at the age and financial demographics of our geographic area. It was noted that we do not have many "young families or young adults" moving into our area...but that we still need to make opportunities available for the Youth and Young Adults that attend our church. Another area that was viewed positively was the activity of our Stewardship Committee. Their encouraging others to "get involved" in parish activities and ministries is a true sign of parish vitality. Several members spoke about our need to put more emphasis on Evangelization efforts...both within and outside of the parish. It was suggested that we be more pro-active by either going into our neighborhoods or doing some direct mailings to all the homes in our Zip Code areas. It was also brought up that several of the members thought that we needed more social and faith gatherings for the parishioners. To address that issue it was also mentioned that we needed more people to get involved in hosting such events since many of our currently active parishioners are getting burnt out or just plain tired. Another key discussion area was that of Liturgical music. It was asked why we do not have more variety in our styles of songs and music. Also noted was a desire to select music more suitable to our younger parishioners...though they may be few in number. It was asked when we would be using a new projection system that will enhance our worship. Father said that we should look towards an end- of-the-summer startup date. Everyone was pleased to hear this. As you can see...we only touched the first area that Father asked us to address. At future Council meetings we will continue this interesting discussion.
