3 GOD IS NOT CONFUSED AND ONLY HE CAN READ OUR HEARTS. Oh, how I wish that I were preaching this weekend. Our scripture-lessons each remind me of our need to always trust in the Lord. Lest you think that this is just a pious platitude, or a pie-in-the- sky way of thinking, it is a reality if we take our relationship with God seriously. All of today s scriptures focus on the same reality: Blessed are those who live in dependence of God rather than in dependence on self. Blessed are those who live under God s reign. As Americans this may rub us the wrong way since our national attitude has always been, I can do what I want; it s a free country. But we need the remind ourselves that the choices that we make in our lives can bring blessings or woes. Our gospel in entitled: The Sermon on the Plain. In it Jesus lays out what God is up to in the world...not rules for human behavior, not strict commands for us to obey. He outlines exactly how God treats everyone and as His people, we are to do likewise. We church-people may have been conditioned to think that everything in the scripture is directed towards us. Not so! Our readings speak about God...who He is and what He s up to. Jesus illustrates this by doing some of His best work through those who the world considers weak, poor, and insignificant. When preaching this sermon Jesus wants us to think and act like God. Theologian, Karl Barth, said that many times we discover that the grace of God is also the judgment of God. God graciousness to us often judges our ingratitude, our gracelessness. At the same time, said Barth, the judgements of God, because they are true, because they are made by the God of love and pronounced for our good, can also be the grace of God. Like Jeremiah, Jesus had a strange idea of what would lead to blessedness. He focused on those who were poor, hungry, sad, hated and persecuted. All of us who listen to Jesus words or attempt to be attentive, are being encouraged to join Him, to be part of His campaign to proclaim the Kingdom of God as trustworthy disciples. Remember that He said that those who were hungry now, sad now, persecuted now, will be blessed in the future. His intention was that those who seem to be prospering now, may not be in God s sight. And, those who seem to be suffering may be indeed blessed. God is not confused, only He can read our hearts. Under construction / Doing Rehab Healing in Progress! Thanks to everyone who has been praying for me since my knee operation. The surgery went well, my stay at both Queens and Rehab of the Pacific hospitals were successful and now I am undergoing serious, Outpatient Physical Therapy. I am forever thankful for the many prayers and kindnesses that have come my way from many of you. I am especially thankful for the priests who have covered me these past few weekends, for Deacon Steve, Donna Craven and Star Lumkee who have conducted weekday communion services, and for my office staff that have kept things going during my absence. Also, to the various ministers who allowed everything to continue smoothly. My doctors tell me that it ll be a few more weeks before I can return to a full schedule in church. I m anxious to return but don t want to do it prematurely and undo the great healing that has been taking place. Please continue to pray for me and be assured that you are all in my daily prayers. Over a month ago we sent out a Parish Registration/Census form to all the individuals and/or families that we have on file at the church office. That bulk mailing included over 1,300 pieces of mail to you, the people of our parish. As of today, we have only received about 250 completed forms. The purpose of this mailing was to: Update our files with your current information. Determine what additional services we can provide according to various age groups. Allow the Pastoral Council to do some future planning. Identify now many individuals/families call Holy Trinity their Parish. Your cooperation is essential, and we would appreciate your returning the completed Registration/ Census ASAP. If you need assistance, or have any questions, please contact the Office for help. 4 When: Tuesday, March 5, 2019 Time: Place: Dress: 6:30 pm following 5pm and burning of the palms. Parish Gym Casual, colorful Mardi Gras chic or Theme costumes. Prizes will be given to recognize your colorful participation. Come and celebrate with your Parish Ohana Bring a dish for people to share as it is a potluck (salad, main course or dessert). Sign-up sheets will be available after each mass starting the weekend of 2/16 and 2/17. Donations of Bottled water would be appreciated and can be dropped off at the Parish office or Gym on the day of the event. If anyone is willing to assist with set up on 3/5/19 and clean up after the event, please let us know. This year, along with our Mardi Gras Costume contest, we will have a Jazz/Blues band to provide the festive 2 nd dance music. We welcome our families to come dressed in costume for this festive occasion. Come enjoy the music, food, prizes and fellowship. We all had such a great time last year and your presence will make it even better this year. In preparation of Ash Wednesday, we are asking you to bring in your old palm fronds from prior years so that they can be transformed into the ashes we will all receive. There is a box in the back of the church simply marked Palms. Please place whatever kind of palms you have in this box. We thank you for your assistance with this request.

5 Blessed John of Fiesole February 18 The patron of Christian artists was born around 1400 in a village overlooking Florence. He took up painting as a young boy and studied under the watchful eye of a local painting master. He joined the Dominicans at about age 20, taking the name Fra Giovanni. He eventually came to be known as Fra Angelico, perhaps a tribute to his own angelic qualities or maybe the devotional tone of his works. He continued to study painting and perfect his own techniques, which included broad-brush strokes, vivid colors and generous, lifelike figures. Michelangelo once said of Fra Angelico: One has to believe that this good monk has visited paradise and been allowed to choose his models there. Whatever his subject matter, Fra Angelico sought to generate feelings of religious devotion in response to his paintings. Among his most famous works are the Annunciation and Descent from the Cross as well as frescoes in the monastery of San Marco in Florence. He also served in leadership positions within the Dominican Order. At one point, Pope Eugenius approached him about serving as archbishop of Florence. Fra Angelico declined, preferring a simpler life. He died in The work of artists adds a wonderful dimension to life. Without art our lives would be much depleted. Let us pray for artists today, especially those who can lift our hearts and minds to God. 6 Stewardship Corner Lesson 138 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church An Act of Love Love is patient, love is kind...the greatest of these is love. (1 Cor 12:31-13:13) We ve all heard this verse from St Paul; most often at weddings, but as we live our lives, we realize that we make mistakes, use poor judgement or hurt others. But love covers over a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 4:8) Love brings healing to our lives and can make a difference in us and our families. It is the core of Christianity. It embodies actions toward others. Our actions and deeds guided by a sincere heart will permit us to emulate loving in a way that God loves; when we challenge ourselves to love as God loves, we will find ourselves following the path of stewardship. Let s challenge ourselves to put our love into action thereby witnessing that an act of love will become a love of action, actions of sharing our Time, Talent and Treasure.
