3 Why did God make me? [Baltimore Catechism question] We are switching gospels, for the next 5 weeks, to St. John s gospel. In it we are presented with Johns spin of Jesus ministry to the crowds. We ll be reading from Chapter 6, which includes the multiplication of the loaves & fish, Jesus walking on water and then a long discourse on Jesus being the Bread of Life. Take note that Johns Gospel is intensely focused on Jesus and not so much on the crowds or flock. That doesn t mean that the crowds are unimportant, but that we need to keep our eyes on what Jesus does and says. The loaves and fish miracle was more than His compassion for their hunger, it was to let them know that God has much more in store for them besides filling their stomachs. Things that they could not fathom as being possible, were possible. God loves His people and will do whatever is necessary to show that and not to prove it. There s an interesting twist of events that follows the crowd being fed. Jesus literally heads for the hills. He needs to find that peaceful retreat area that has been eluding Him. This is one of John s insights, that Jesus needed a break from meeting the people s needs. Was Jesus a success? Well, if we are to judge from the size of the crowds He was! Figures don t lie, some of those crowds were more than 5,000 people strong. But why they were attracted to Jesus was the issue at hand. He healed them, fed them, He met all their needs and that s all they wanted and needed, so they thought. That s what drew the crowds to Him and it was the wrong reason. Jesus was the Son of God, the Messiah and not some magician or someone to just satisfy their human needs. He wanted to tend to the spiritual dimension of each person, their souls., that s what He came to save. If you are praying for a miracle, you might want to rethink your prayers. If you are praying for God s will to be done in your life, keep those prayers going. Now back to that Catechism question that s the title for this writing: Why did God make you? The answer is: to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him, in this world and the next. It s not the other way around as the people in the gospel thought. Our faith should lead each of us to giving God the glory no matter what we get or don t get from Him. That s the point that Jesus was trying to make and please, don t come to church only thinking about yourself. We serve Him by knowing Him and appreciating all that we have been blessed with in this life and in the world to come. It s all of us together in His marvelous Kingdom hungry or not!
4 Stewardship Corner Lesson 109 Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Measuring Up For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you (Luke 6:38) You might remember watching television chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Julia Child. When they tasted, they would use a small spoon; but when serving, they changed to a large ladle. Grandmothers were known to do likewise. When we dine, the table spoon is smaller than the serving ladle because the former is used for feeding oneself; while the latter for serving guests. It s the same with Stewardship. When we serve the Lord, let s use the ladle. Thank you for your donations. The bulletins on July 22 and 29, 2018 will not include the collection figures since the bulletins will be printed prior to the date of the collection each Sunday. This is only a temporary (2 weeks) delay as the printer will be out of town during this time. The collections will be reported in the August 5th Bulletin. On behalf of Seminarians everywhere, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It is only through your generosity that these young men can continue to grow and learn and live the life Christ has brought them to. God Bless You for your generous gifts and please continue to pray for our Seminarians as they continue their studies so that someday soon they will walk amongst us, teaching and spreading the Word of God.

6 2018 Annual Life Symposium Nā Mo olelo Ola: Living Stories Each person has many unique and personal stories to share. Sometimes stories are tragic and heartbreaking: Suicide of a family member, a close friend or relative. A young life abducted into slavery, human trafficking or addiction. An elderly parent whose family is in conflict over decisions to sustain or withdraw life support. An individual or family that are added to the list of thousands who are homeless. This symposium addresses the educational component of the USCCB Pastoral Plan for Pro- Life Activities and will address serious issues as we look through the lens of Holy Scripture, Church teaching, and personal (life stories) testimonies. This symposium is suggested for parents, grandparents, educators, clergy and religious, youth and young adults, ministry leaders, medical professionals, and adult laity because each of us are called to a continuing commitment to preserve the sanctity of life. To register, go online to: education/ or call the Respect Life Office at Registration deadline: July 31 Registration fee: $25. Scholarships are available.
