3 IN OR OUT? INCLUDED OR EXCLUDED? What a great feeling it is to be included and what a terrible experience to feel left out! Included is comforting, and excluded is painful. Saul, knew what it was like to be shunned, ignored, and even hated. Well, what did he expect being a bounty hunter of Christians? When he tried to join the disciples in Jerusalem they were afraid of him. Barnabas went to bat for him and got him included by the Apostles. Jesus used many parables to highlight the necessity of seeing everyone as equals. He downplayed excluding anyone, especially the needy, poor, and disenfranchised. A unique feature of Jesus stories was the fact that oftentimes people who presumed themselves to be part of the in crowd ended up on the outside! And, the reverse was also true. The forgotten ones were always invited to the festive banquet, the wedding feasts, and to sit on the great lawn and eat as much as they wanted after He blessed the loaves and fishes. He never wanted to put anyone in the position to have to ask, Can I come too? What about me? They got an invitation, will I get one also? Or, How come I m not on the list of invitees? We hear wonderful words in today s Gospel that show us how to be included in Gods blessings and Kingdom: If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want, and it will be done for you. We are also told that we must bear fruit to stay attached or included. Saul, through his preaching bore fruit. The Apostles bore fruit by spreading the faith everywhere and to all people. And we are told to continue this by passing on the Holy Spirit that we have each received. He includes us, now we should include others always. One of His branches, 3

4 Our Family Promise guests arrive today (April 29). We are expecting 4 families: 8 adults and 6 children (ages 2-13). If you see or meet any of our guests please say hello and wish them well. A simple smile and wave could make their day. We could still use some help with doing laundry, cleaning after host week and monetary and gift card donations. Thank you in advance for your assistance with what I am sure will be a promising week for our guest families. Please be advised in the coming months two upgrade Parish projects will commence. The first is the addition and replacement of fencing at the front of the property. This work will have minor impact to parish operations, but we ask as you pay special attention when enter and exit the property to look out for workers and slowing down will help avoid any issues. The second project is the addition of solar powered vehicle gates on all access points of the property for night-time protection. This work will impact driving on and off the property for several weeks. As we get closer signs and directions will be included in the bulletin and on the property to guide drivers. Stewardship Corner Stewardship at Holy Trinity Catholic Church - Lesson 96 How Many Loaves Do You Have? How many loaves do you have? (Mat 15:34) We know the parable of the loaves and fishes. The crowd did their part; they sat and listened. They Apostles did their part too; they gathered their resources and brought them to Jesus. We need to do our part as well. We should participate actively, bringing our gifts and needs to Him. Jesus will transform our gifts and we will overflow with His grace, because He never stops giving. This participation is our gift of stewardship. 7 5th Sunday of Easter April 29, th Sunday of Easter As a child, Easter was a joyous morning of going to church, participating in Easter egg hunts, and going out for a major feast of Easter brunch. As a child, Easter was all about the morning. Yet, as an adult, it is now the dark of the Easter Vigil night that matters. I cannot help but ask, which is the true Easter, the morning filled with candy, eggs and noise, or the darkness, finding the tomb empty, where all is silent as we await Jesus, who will meet us as he did His apostles, at the appointed place, our hearts? This movement from darkness to light, from death to resurrection, from fear to resting in God s peace, this is what Easter means to me. Jesus descended into the darkness of hell, then arose to become not just a light to the apostles and the women at the tomb, but a light to the entire world. As St. Augustine said, We are a Resurrection people, and Alleluia is our song! In fact, we celebrate Easter from Easter Vigil to Pentecost, a full 50 days or nearly 15 percent of the year is devoted to Easter time. In fact, every single Sunday, all year round, we celebrate the Resurrection. We are a Resurrection people, and Alleluia is our song! 7
