Alleluia PSALM 100 WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MINUTE FOR MISSION for the Blue Chip Chorus Benefit Concert Ken Stevens COMMISSIONING OF CHURCH SCHOOL STAFF CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, we confess that there are many things that cloud our vision. Too often we fail to reach out or even notice people in need. Forgive our indifference. Help us to see those around us who are suffering. Help us to notice families without the basic necessities of life; the unemployed; victims of violence; the addicted; those who are physically or mentally challenged. May your love for us inspire us to love others unconditionally and without reserve. In the name of Jesus we pray. PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen. * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. THE ORDINATION & INSTALLATION OF DEACON SARA LEE

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified. People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. S. Wesley Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee. The darkness is no darkness with Thee, but the night is as clear as the day. The darkness and the light to Thee are both alike. God is light and with Him is no darkness at all. Oh let my soul live and it shall praise Thee. For Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, for evermore. SECOND LESSON Luke 16:19-31 SERMON Reaping Rev. Richard S. Hong THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Praise Ye the Lord John Rutter Praise ye the Lord. Praise God in His holiness: praise Him in the firmament of His power. Praise Him in His noble acts: praise Him according to His excellent greatness. Praise Him in the sound of the trumpet: praise Him upon the lute and harp. Praise Him in the cymbals and dances: praise Him upon the strings and pipe. Praise Him upon the well-tuned cymbals: praise Him upon the loud cymbals. Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. PSALM 150

* THE DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Creator, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SENDING OUT * HYMN 428 We Give Thee but Thine Own Schumann * BENEDICTION CHORAL AMEN POSTLUDE Toccata in B-flat Minor Vierne Our worship ends with the conclusion of the Postlude. (It is the custom of our church to remain seated. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * * ABOUT TODAY S MUSIC The 24 Fantasy-Pieces of Louis Vierne ( ), organist of Notre Dame de Paris, like Bach s Well-Tempered Clavier and Chopin s Preludes are each in a different major or minor key. This suite represents one of the composer's finest achievements (though attained at great cost to his health): his saving of the Notre Dame Organ through proceeds from composition and tours, including a strenuous four-month tour of the United States. Each of the six movements in Suite No. 2, when published, bore Vierne's dedication to an American who had helped him with the tour. Clair de lune (Moonlight) is a title often used by French composers. This one is quite different in effect from the piano work by Debussy. It is the longest movement in the suite, marked Adagio molto espressivo, and is in the key of D flat major. The finale is a Toccata, Allegro risoluto in B flat minor. It is a stormy perpetual motion type of composition and is one of Vierne's best-known

individual compositions. Samuel Sebastian Wesley ( ) was the grandson of Charles Wesley and the son of musician Samuel Wesley. He served as organist for Exeter and Winchester cathedrals and composed exclusively for the Anglican service. Thou wilt keep him is a beautiful and gentle anthem written in contrasting sections, this piece was included in the order of service for the Queen s coronation in John Rutter (b. 1945) is perhaps the most popular British composer of sacred music today. Many of his compositions are heard regularly at Christmastime and he combines skilled choral writing with a popular flair. * * * * * TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Jeremiah 32:6-15 (NRSV) Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came to me: 7 Hanamel son of your uncle Shallum is going to come to you and say, Buy my field that is at Anathoth, for the right of redemption by purchase is yours. 8 Then my cousin Hanamel came to me in the court of the guard, in accordance with the word of the LORD, and said to me, Buy my field that is at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for the right of possession and redemption is yours; buy it for yourself. Then I knew that this was the word of the LORD. 9 And I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and weighed out the money to him, seventeen shekels of silver. 10 I signed the deed, sealed it, got witnesses, and weighed the money on scales. 11 Then I took the sealed deed of purchase, containing the terms and conditions, and the open copy; 12 and I gave the deed of purchase to Baruch son of Neriah son of Mahseiah, in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, in the presence of the witnesses who signed the deed of purchase, and in the presence of all the Judeans who were sitting in the court of the guard. 13 In their presence I charged Baruch, saying, 14 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, in order that they may last for a long time. 15 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land. Luke 16:19-31 (NRSV) There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to

be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24 He called out, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames. 25 But Abraham said, Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us. 27 He said, Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father s house 28 for I have five brothers that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment. 29 Abraham replied, They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them. 30 He said, No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent. 31 He said to him, If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.. * * * * * WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP Ushers for this Sunday s service are: Beneranda Baez, Captain Nelson Baez Shirley Murdock Beverly Rhinehart Candida Urena Our Lay Assistant this morning is Lauren Bigler.
