2 CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, you call us to live out our faith in ways that honor you and bless our neighbors. Forgive us when we receive your generous gifts with pleasure while failing to invest these gifts in the service of others. We pray that our hearts will be shaped and reshaped by your Holy Spirit. May our accountability as disciples of Christ be evident in our worship, our witness and our service. This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior. Hong * NICENE CREED We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried, and the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And he shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead, whose kingdom shall have no end. Listen to the teaching of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11 What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of goats. 12 When you come to appear before me, who asked this from your hand? Trample my courts no more; 13 bringing offerings is futile; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity. 14 Your new moons and your appointed festivals my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. 15 When you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even

Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35 Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; 36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. 37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. 38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. 39 But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. * * * * * WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP Ushers for this Sunday s service are: Nicole Kim, Captain Paul Kang Sara Lee Andrew Platek Paul Platek Our Lay Assistant this morning is Paul Platek. Paul is a Certified Financial Planner working for UBS in Paramus. He joined First Presbyterian in 2006 and has been very active since. Paul is an elder and chair of the Stewardship Committee. He also facilitates the Financial Peace University course given at the church. The thirteenth FPU class will start on September 18th and Paul is very proud of the fact that close to 200 people have attended the classes. He

7 has given a similar course for high school and college students at the church and has presented Financial Peace Jr. to the parents of children from 4-12 years of age. Paul is very active with Rotary and has been involved with Rotary's Gift of Life program for several years in which children are brought in from Third World countries for life saving heart surgery. His family has hosted 9 children and one adult from various parts of the world. Paul lives in Wyckoff with his wife Carmen and son Andrew. Sandra Ruggles has been with FPC for over 16 years as soloist. Over those years she has noticed that the congregation loves to sing some of the old hymns that are no longer in the present hymnal. With the help of David, she has taken a few "oldies" and made her own arrangement/medley to sing for you today. If you feel moved to sing along, she would love it. Like First Presbyterian, who begins a new chapter in the history of the church, Sandra is beginning her new chapter in her life of retirement...still continuing her singing, her voice teaching, her love and knowledge of wine, and spending more time with her husband, Rick Dolan and her dogs. She is also sharing one of her talented voice students with you today, Linda Garcia, mezzo soprano, who is a junior at Rutgers college ANNOUNCEMENTS FPC FUNDRAISER: HABITAT FOR HUMANITY GLOBAL VILLAGE - Join us during Coffee & Conversation August 28th at 12:15 p.m. for a fundraiser event to help support Bruce & Rosetta Forshee and Marcy Steele as they represent FPC in their Mission Work in Flathead Valley, MT. This special day here in Bergen County will have volunteers coming together from area churches and synagogues as an Interfaith Build and FPC has been asked if we can have a representative.
