2 MINUTE FOR MISSION Yvonne Crichton CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, we think of the freedom we have in Christ and too often we accept it as the freedom to do what we like, rather than the freedom to be obedient to you. Forgive us when we use our freedom to be self-indulgent, instead of serving one another in love. Forgive us when we fail to take Jesus demands on our lives seriously enough. May we strive to faithfully follow Jesus on the challenging road of discipleship. This we pray in the name of Jesus. PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. 6 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS 2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14 (NRSV) Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 Elijah said to Elisha, Stay here; for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. 6 Then Elijah said to him, Stay here; for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you. Elisha said, Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit. 10 He responded, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not. 11 As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12 Elisha kept watching and crying out, Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13 He picked up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14 He took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah? When he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over. Luke 9:51-62 (NRSV) When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; 53 but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, Lord, do you want us to
7 command fire to come down from heaven and consume them? 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 Then they went on to another village. 57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, I will follow you wherever you go. 58 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. 59 To another he said, Follow me. But he said, Lord, first let me go and bury my father. 60 But Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God. 61 Another said, I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home. 62 Jesus said to him, No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God. * * * * *

12 Confirmation Class of 2016 June 26, 2016 For each of the confirmands, a brief excerpt from their Statement of Faith is presented, along with a Bible verse chosen for them by Rev. Hong Rachel Kumor The church is a community. It's where we join one another for empathy, compassion, and pure joy. It is where everyone of us is connected and love is felt through and through. Psalm 104:33 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. Camilia Polack Because Jesus came to live and understand us on Earth, I know He understands me and loves me. 1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. Chloe Mei Rees Without the Holy Spirit, we wouldn t have the bond we have with each other now. The Holy Spirit is the bridge in humanity. Isaiah 40:31 But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
13 About the Confirmation Process: Three youth participated in the confirmation process this year. Class sessions were held with Pastor Rich or Pastor Kellie on Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons. Carol Schulzrinne was invaluable as she coordinated the many aspects of the program. The confirmands read the Gospel of Luke and the confirmation edition of the Study Catechism of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Each confirmand also developed a brief statement of their personal faith. They also participated in mission opportunities. This class persevered through many schedule changes and location shifts caused by the fire. What is Confirmation? In the Presbyterian tradition, we ordinarily practice infant baptism. When a child is baptized, his/her parents and the congregation vow to nurture the child in faith. When the child reaches an age at which he/she can choose to declare his/her own faith in Jesus Christ (typically 8th or 9th grade in our tradition), this is said to be a confirmation of the baptismal vows. In the Presbyterian Church, this rite is technically called the Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Covenant. Upon confirmation, the person is received into full communicant membership, with the right to vote in congregational meetings, hold office, etc. It is with great pride and joy that we welcome these young people who have chosen to profess their faith in Jesus Christ and accept their roles as full members of the congregation.
