Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * * TODAY S MUSIC The Lutheran chorale Valet will ich dir geben was written in 1613 by Herberger, with a tune by Melchior Technor composed in The original text was a hymn about death written in response to the plague of The tune has been repurposed several times and is today connected to the text written by Theodulph of Orleans in the 8th century and translated All Glory, Laud and Honor. Today we hear two settings, by J. S. Bach, and by German romantic composer Max Reger. Welsh composer William Mathias ( ) was a child piano prodigy. His many works for chorus, orchestra or organ bring a contemporary but accessible sound to sacred music. The Offertory is a setting of a hymn by Peter Abelard, a French scholastic philosopher and the greatest logician of the 12th century. This Hymn was sung in the night office (Nocturns) of prayers on the evening of Good Friday. This setting is by Kenneth Leighton ( ), an English pianist and composer. Holding appointments at both Oxford and Edinburgh Universities, he composed for a wide range of sacred and concert settings. Alexandre Guilmant ( ) was organist at La Trinité in Paris for 30 years and a well travelled organ recitalist, even founding a school of liturgical music in New York City during a recital tour (still existing at FPC Manhattan). His march on a theme of Handel shows his interest in the contrapuntal music of Bach, seen through a romantic lens. * * * * *

As they were untying it, 5 some of the bystanders said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,

6 Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! 7 WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP Our Lay Assistant this morning is Sandy Bishop. Sandy Bishop was born and raised in West Virginia and has lived in Missouri, Maine, Ohio and New York City before moving to Teaneck in 2003 with her husband, David. She worked for 25 years for the American Bible Society with responsibility for Scripture distribution in the United States. She retired in June, 2007 and is enjoying time for reading, photography, and family. Sandy serves as Clerk of Session, and is FPC s Financial Secretary.
