Forgive us all the times we put conditions or boundaries on our love. You have sent the Spirit of peace, yet at times our words and actions contribute to division. Refresh and renew us with your Spirit so that we can be fruitful and vital disciples of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. 4 PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. TODAY S MUSIC * * * * * The Gregorian chant hymn Veni creator spiritus or Come Holy Spirit was composed in the 9th Century and is associated with the feast of Pentecost as well as any time the Holy Spirit is invoked such as confirmation, ordination of clergy, election of popes and dedication of churches. At the time of the Reformation Martin Luther composed Komm, Gott Schöpfer, heiliger Geist, a metrical version of this chant in German that could be sung by congregations. It is these words and melody that are set by Johannes Eccard ( ) for today s Introit. Eccard was born in Thuringia in Germany during the height of the Lutheran Reformation, and his music is associated with German Lutheranism. He was appointed court composer in Berlin shortly before his death. An English translation of Veni creator was prepared by George Wither ( ) in Hymnes and Songes of the Church (1623) and it is this version that is set by Orlando Gibbons ( ) who was renowned in his time as the greatest English composer of his generation. He served as organist for the British Chapel Royal and for Westminster Abbey until his untimely death at age 41. Another English translation was published by John Cosin in 1660 and this version was set by William Boyce ( ). Boyce was Master of the Kings music from 1755 and was appointed organist of the Chapel Royal in The organ prelude and postlude are also based on the Veni creator chant

5 tune, first by Belgian organist, Flor Peeters ( ), a noted organ recitalist and composer. Among his more than 100 organ works are many settings of familiar hymn tunes. The postlude is from the Orgelbüchlein or little organ book composed by J.S Bach ( ) in the 1710 s in Weimar while he spent a month in jail for an unexcused leave from his court employment. It is a collection of 46 chorales (hymn tunes) arranged by the liturgical year. * * * * * TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Ezekiel 37:1-14 (NRSV) The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me all around them; there were very many lying in the valley, and they were very dry. 3 He said to me, Mortal, can these bones live? I answered, O Lord God, you know. 4 Then he said to me, Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. 5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. 6 I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord. 7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. 8 I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. 9 Then he said to me, Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live. 10 I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. 11 Then he said to me, Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely. 12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. 14 I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord.

6 Romans 8:22-27 (NRSV) We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. * * * * * WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP Our Lay Assistant this morning is Joshua Daniel Dagdayan. Joshua is in 7th grade at the Academy of St. Therese de Lisieux in Cresskill. His school activities include singing in the school choir and playing saxophone in the school band. He is also a member of the Art Club, and loves making art, animation movies, and playing video games. He has been taking art classes at the Art School at Old Church in Demarest since Kindergarten. He enjoys going to summer enrichment classes, especially STEM at Dwight Englewood School. Joshua is big brother to Genesis and lives in Closter, NJ. 7 Confirmation Class of 2018 For each of the confirmands, a brief excerpt from their Statement of Faith is presented, along with a Bible verse chosen for them by Rev. Hong What is Confirmation? When a child is baptized, his/her parents and the congregation vow to nurture the child in faith. When the child reaches an age at which he/she can choose to declare his/her own faith in Jesus Christ, and be baptized or confirm their baptismal vows. It is with great joy that we welcome these young people who have chosen to profess their faith in Jesus Christ and accept their roles as full members of the church. Jillian Paige Heitner I am going to be more loyal to God and think before my words and actions. God created a world and a society where we can be free, and where we can sin. Galatians 2:20 It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Emily Elisabeth Secor God gives us fortitude and watches over us. God will always lead you into the right direction of life. When God speaks to us we should listen. Galatians 6:9 So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up.
