1 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ENGLEWOOD LIVE boldly SHARE boundlessly GROW community BUILD God s world October 22, 2017 Eleven o clock TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE GATHERING The service of worship begins with the prelude; quiet is requested as you enter the sanctuary and prepare for worship. Ordinarily applause is held until the conclusion of the Postlude. In the spirit of Christian fellowship, we invite you to wear a name tag which is available from the greeters. As a community that prays with and for one another, we invite you to share your joys and concerns by using the prayer cards available from the ushers. Those parts of the Service of Worship in which the congregation participates in word or song are noted in bold type. Please stand as you are able. PRELUDE Preludium in G Minor Lübeck * HYMN 150 Come, Christians, Join to Sing Madrid WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION God our Savior, here we are with many faults, together with our gifts and graces. We are aware of some sins but blind to other aspects of evil in our lives. Jesus looked on the faults of others with merciful eyes. We confess that even knowing we have been forgiven so much, we have not yet learned to forgive as Jesus did. Jesus spoke mercy; lived love; embodied compassion. We pray that more than just proclaiming his life, we will live as he showed us. This we pray in his name.
2 PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen. * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. * WORDS OF INSTITUTION THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM * THE APOSTLES CREED (in unison) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. QUESTIONS OF INTENT PRAYER THE BAPTISM OF WYATT SAMUEL BORAM JUNG

5 TODAY S MUSIC Vincent Lübeck ( ) became organist of St Cosmae et Damiani, Stade, near Hamburg, marrying, as was a custom, his predecessor s daughter. His brilliant reputation then won him the appointment of organist of the Nikolaikirche, Hamburg, which he held until his death. It had a Schnitger organ, a four-manual instrument of 67 stops, one of the largest in the world. Despite Lübeck s frequent opportunities to display his gifts as a composer and performer, especially in the Saturday Vesper service, only nine organ works by him are known. Yet even these few abundantly demonstrate the commanding position he occupied, together with Dietrich Buxtehude and Bruhns, in north German organ music about His praeludia have been described as virtually the last link between the north German organ toccata and those of Bach. The anthem is by Mack Wilberg (b. 1955), the recently appointed director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. During his many years as associate director, he made many arrangements of hymns such as Peace like a river for that illustrious group. George Frideric Handel s ( ) jubilant chorus concludes his oratorio Samson, written in 1742 immediately after Messiah to a text reworked from Milton s Samson Agonistes. It quickly became one of Handel s most often-performed works, and was revised several times by the composer, who added the final chorus Let their celestial concerts all unite only as an inspired afterthought. The short Fugue in G Major, with its jig-like rhythm, is a charming work long attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) although there are no documents to authenticate it. The earliest known copy is thought to have belonged to an eighteenth-century composer named F. W. Rust who was a pupil of Bach's oldest son. Rust's grandson, in the nineteenth century, held Bach's old post as Leipzig organist and edited the first attempt at a complete edition of the master's compositions. This may seem to be authority enough except that the Bach son was a very untrustworthy character who, among other things, passed off one of his father's Vivaldi arrangements as his own composition, and furthermore, young Rust played a notorious hoax on the musical world by rewriting his grandfather's compositions and then claiming that they were a hundred years ahead of their time in style and expression. * * * * *
6 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Isaiah 45:1-7 (NRSV) Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him and the gates shall not be closed: 2 I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4 For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, 6 so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. 7 I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things. Matthew 22:15-22 (NRSV) Then the Pharisees went and plotted to entrap him in what he said. 16 So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. 17 Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? 18 But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin used for the tax. And they brought him a denarius. 20 Then he said to them, Whose head is this, and whose title? 21 They answered, The emperor s. Then he said to them, Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor s, and to God the things that are God s. 22 When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. * * * * *
