In the spirit of Christian fellowship, we invite you to wear a name tag which is available from the greeters. As a community that prays with and for one another, we invite you to share your joys and concerns by using the prayer cards available from the ushers. Through sin we have perpetuated a world torn by violence, oppression, and strife. In this fallen world, hope is hard to muster. The seed of faith is small within us. Have mercy on us. Stir us, empower us, redeem us, so that we might move toward you and grow in the ways of faith, hope, love, and peace. We pray in Jesus name. Hong * NICENE CREED We believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father by whom all things were made; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man, and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. 5 THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. Revelation 3:20 All who trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior are invited to participate in this celebration. BREAD: To be taken individually, symbolic of your personal commitment to God through Jesus Christ. For those who are gluten-sensitive, the cups on each paten (bread plate) contain gluten-free crackers. CUP: Please wait until all are served, symbolic of your corporate belonging together in the body of Christ. Grape juice is the fruit of the vine used in our celebration of the sacrament. (It is the custom of our church to remain seated. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * * NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC Olivier Messiaen ( ) was a French composer, organist, and ornithologist. In 1931, Messiaen became an organist at the church of La Trinite in Paris where he worked until his death. His compositional style was very complex - he used Greek and Hindu rhythms, and specially designed modes of limited transposition. The most important influence on Messiaen's style was bird songs. He travelled widely, recorded,

6 transcribed songs of birds of various regions of the Earth, and used them extensively in his compositions "Le Banquet Celeste" (Heavenly Feast) is one of his earliest published composition (1928). Although the piece is only 2 pages long, it lasts about 7 minutes. This slow tempo is a symbol of the heavenly feast, which lasts eternally. Our choral pieces today are by three British composers of different eras. Orlando Gibbons ( ) was the most noted composer and keyboardist in England during his lifetime. Among other posts he was organist at Westminster Abbey. Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ) was a leading symphonist of his time. His academic and church music credentials provided him the editorship of The English Hymnal. His interest in folk music can be heard in the melodic shape of today s introit. Herbert Howells ( ) was trained as an organist but poor health attributed to Graves disease prevented him from holding a church position. His whole career was spent composing church music and teaching at the Royal College of Music in London. Johan Albrechtsberger ( ) was an Austrian composer, theorist and Kapellmeister at St. Stephen s Cathedral. He is best remembered as being one on Beethoven s teachers. Today s postlude is an academic fugue on the Gregorian chant sung at the end of traditional Catholic masses The Mass is ended, go in peace. * * * * * TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Lamentations 1:1-6 (NRSV) How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. 2 She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. 3 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. 4 The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 5 Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the LORD has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. 6 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer.
