6 TODAY S MUSIC Samuel Scheidt ( ) was born in Halle, Germany and served churches in that area. A student of Sweelinck in Amsterdam, Scheidt was the first significant German Baroque composer of organ music. His Tablatura Nova of 1624 was the first keyboard edition by a German organist published in modern notation. William Billings ( ) was a colonial American composer from Boston, and is widely regarded as the father of American choral music. In addition to his involvement in establishing Singing Schools Billings created what is now recognized as a uniquely American style. Ralph Manuel (b. 1951) has written various sacred choral anthems, vocal solos and duets, and keyboard arrangements. He and his wife, Donna, spent 24 years as missionaries of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Recife, Brazil. He currently serves as Minister of Music at Heritage Baptist Church in Norwood, Massachusetts. Today we recognize Good Shepherd Sunday with Grayston Ives (born 1948) setting of Psalm 23. Ives is a British composer, singer and choral director. Until March 2009, Ives was Organist, Tutor in Music at Magdalen College, Oxford. In this role he was responsible for the daily musical life of the college chapel. He was a member of The King s Singers in the 1980s. The music of Everett Titcomb ( ) occupies a unique niche sacred organ and choral works by 20thcentury Anglican composers in the United States. His style was clearly influenced by the Bostonian giants of his youth (Dudley Buck, Horatio Parker--who's mother once had Titcomb as a border) as well as his affinity for French music; yet at the same time his work is informed by his interest in plainchant and the polyphonic style of the 15th and 16th century. He spent fifty years ( ) as organist and choirmaster at Boston's Church of St. John the Evangelist. * * * * * TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS 2 Samuel 24:18-24 (NRSV) That day Gad came to David and said to him, Go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 Following Gad s instructions, David went up, as the LORD had commanded. 20 When Araunah looked down, he saw the king and his servants coming toward him; and Araunah went out and prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground. 21 Araunah said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? David said, To buy the threshing floor from you in order to build an altar to the LORD, so that the plague may be averted from the people. 22 Then Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him; here are the oxen for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood. 23 All this, O king, Araunah gives to the king. And Araunah said to the king, May the LORD your God respond favorably to you. 24 But the king said to Araunah, No, but I will buy them from you for a

7 price; I will not offer burnt offerings to the LORD my God that cost me nothing. So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. She is a member of the Edgewater Library Board and the Cultural and Historical Committee. The FLOWERS today are dedicated to the glory of God in loving memory of Kathy Stevens for her birthday on May 18, given by Ken and Nina Stevens.
