We have not loved others as you have loved us. We have denied the promises of baptism and cut ourselves off from you. 11 MUSIC IN WORSHIP The Spiritual Striders, a Christ Care group here at Northminster, are underwriters for today's prelude, offertory, and postlude. This gift is in memory of one of their members, Fran MacAllister, who adored bayan and piano as well as African-American spirituals. The Introit (11:00), Laudate Dominum, is a setting of Psalm 117 by the German Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler ( ). Hassler was a Protestant, but he composed for the Roman Catholic and Lutheran churches. He was the first important German Baroque composer to study in Italy. Laudate Dominum is a good representation of Hassler s choral compositions. He does not write with a basso continuo, the hallmark of the new Baroque style. Instead he uses the cantus firmus technique as the basis of his polyphony. In this piece, the cantus firmus (melody) is first stated by the altos, then sopranos, basses and tenors. Today s 11:00 Anthem is Peter Anglea s Jubilate Deo, a 2014 setting of the traditional Latin text from Psalm 100. The use of mixed meters helps give the piece a buoyant feel. A South Carolina native, Mr. Anglea (born 1988) is a graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, where he studied composition with Dan Forest (born 1978). In addition to writing and arranging choral music, Mr. Anglea is an accomplished pianist and trumpet player. His day job is as a web developer. Sunday Worship What s Next? May 6 Communion will be celebrated. As we continue the Easter Season we ll focus on Jesus farewell discourse. May 13 7 th Sunday of Easter. Jesus farewell discourse continues through the Gospel of John and the focus this week is on prayer. What does Jesus ask when he prays for us? Bring your mom to church today.
