FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ENGLEWOOD November 22, 2015 Eleven o clock CHRIST THE KING LIVE boldly SHARE boundlessly GROW community BUILD God s world THE GATHERING The service of worship begins with the prelude; quiet is requested as you enter the sanctuary and prepare for worship. In the spirit of Christian fellowship, we invite you to wear a name tag which is available from the greeters. As a community that prays with and for one another, we invite you to share your joys and concerns by using the prayer cards available from the ushers and in the pew racks. Those parts of the Service of Worship in which the congregation participates in word or song are noted in bold type. Please stand as you are able. PRELUDE Prelude on Darwall s 148 th Alec Wyton * HYMN 151 Crown Him with Many Crowns Diademata * CALL TO WORSHIP (based on Psalm 146): Leader: Praise the Lord, O my soul. People: I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Leader: Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. People: When their spirit departs, they return to the ground. Leader: Blessed are they whose help is the God of Jacob. People: Blessed are they whose hope is in the Lord their God. INTROIT Richard Proulx The Lord is King! He is robed with majesty. Behold he is coming amid the clouds. Behold, and every eye will see him.

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS MINUTE FOR CHRISTMAS MUSIC David Macfarlane CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious God, as we think today about Jesus as Christ the King, we confess that we hesitate over his rule in our hearts. We resist turning our understanding of power and authority upside down. We are ashamed to admit our desire for prestige and privilege. Forgive us when we forget that doing your will should be our greatest priority. Renew us with your Spirit so that our lives testify to the truth of your kingdom, as we pray in the name of Jesus. PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen. * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. * EXCHANGE OF PEACE Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified. People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Response - And also with you. )

TIME WITH CHILDREN * HYMN 145 Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart Marion + Children and Youth leave for Church School. + PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION THE WORD FIRST LESSON 2 Samuel 23:1-7 ANTHEM At the Round Earth s Imagined Corners Spencer At the round earth's imagin'd corners, blow Your trumpets, angels, and arise, arise From death, you numberless infinities Of souls, and to your scatter'd bodies go; All whom the flood did, and fire shall o'erthrow, All whom war, dearth, age, agues, tyrannies, Despair, law, chance hath slain, and you whose eyes Shall behold God and never taste death's woe. But let them sleep, Lord, and me mourn a space, For if above all these my sins abound, 'Tis late to ask abundance of thy grace When we are there; here on this lowly ground Teach me how to repent; for that's as good As if thou hadst sealed my pardon with thy blood. SECOND LESSON John 18:33-38 SERMON True Rev. Richard S. Hong THE OFFERING OFFERTORY My Eternal King Jane M. Marshall My God, I love thee, not because I hope for heaven thereby, nor yet because, if I love not, I must forever die. Thou, O my Jesus, thou didst me upon the cross embrace; for me didst bear the nails and spear and manifold disgrace. Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love thee well? Not for the sake of winning heaven, nor of escaping hell. Not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward, but as thyself hast loved me, O everlasting Lord. So would I love thee, dearest Lord, and in thy praise will sing; Solely because thou art my God and my eternal King.

* THE DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Creator, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SENDING OUT * HYMN 155 Rejoice, the Lord Is King Darwall s 148 th * BENEDICTION CHORAL AMEN POSTLUDE Te Deum Bedard Our worship ends with the conclusion of the Postlude. (It is the custom of our church to remain seated. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * *

TODAY S MUSIC Alec Rowley ( ) was an English composer and writer on music. He studied at London's Royal Academy of Music with Frederick Corder, and later taught at Trinity College in the same city. He frequently performed and broadcast piano duets with Edgar Moy, and was widely known for his compositions for amateur forces. The prelude is his setting of the hymn tune Darwall s 148th, composed by John Darwall in 1770 as a setting of Psalm 148. Composer Williametta Spencer (b. 1932) was born in Illinois, educated in Michigan and California and won a Fulbright to study in Paris. Her work as an educator and choral clinician has brought her national attention, and her small catalogue of choral compositions have all won awards. Today s anthem is based on one of the 19 Holy Sonnets written by poet John Donne in Dating from his conversion to Anglicanism, these poems in modified Petrarchian form are masterpieces of English poetry. Jane Marshall s name may not be known to people in the pews, but in the choir loft it s another story. At 90, Dallas resident is Jane M. Marshall is revered by music ministers and choir members for her anthems, hymns and other sacred music compositions. Her compositional career was launched with the anthem My Eternal King. It was her first, and she wrote it as a 26-year-old homemaker, singing alto in the Highland Park Methodist Church choir. Last year the 60th anniversary of the anthem s publication in sheet music and it remains a staple for many churches across denominations. Canadian organist Denis Bedard (b. 1950) has an active recital career and is the music director of the Catholic cathedral in Vancouver. Today s postlude is a setting of the Gregorian hymn of thanksgiving Te deum laudamus (we praise you O God.) * * * * *

TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS 2 Samuel 23:1-7 (NRSV) Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel: 2 The spirit of the LORD speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. 3 The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, 4 is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. 5 Is not my house like this with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. Will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? 6 But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away; for they cannot be picked up with the hand; 7 to touch them one uses an iron bar or the shaft of a spear. And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot. John 18:33-38 (NRSV) Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered, Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me? 35 Pilate replied, I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. 37 Pilate asked him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice. 38 Pilate asked him, What is truth? After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, I find no case against him. * * * * *
