2 PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of grace, in ancient days you broke into Samuel's life and called his name, and he said "Here I am, speak, for your servant is listening." We confess that we do not expect to meet you and so we fail to discern your presence. We are often unwilling to believe that you might be calling each one of us. Yet you call to us. You ask us to spread your Gospel and build your kingdom. Fill us anew with the Holy Spirit that we may joyfully respond to your call. In the name of Christ our Lord we pray. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * * TODAY S MUSIC In Recognition of Dr. King s birthday holiday, today we sing a spiritual by Duke Ellington ( ). Ellington s Black Brown And Beige was composed in 1943, near the end of the swing era. The first movement contains one of the great American melodies Come Sunday. Originally written as a solo for the alto sax player Johnny Hodges, this 32-bar melody was rearranged by the composer for the great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in Lift Every Voice and Sing, today s closing hymn, was first heard as a poem written by James Weldon Johnson and recited for Lincoln s birthday in Soon after, Johnson s brother John set it to music and it quickly took on the informal status of the Black National Anthem. Philip W J Stopford (born 1977) is an English sacred music choral composer and director of the professional chorus Ecclesium. Pierre du Mage ( ) was a French Baroque organist and composer. At some point during his youth Dumage moved to Paris and studied under Louis Marchand. In 1710 Dumage was appointed titular organist of the Laon Cathedral. Due to strained relations with his superiors in the cathedral chapter, Dumage left in 1719, at the age of 45, and became a civil servant. He apparently neither played nor composed music professionally until his death, 32 years later when he was killed by an exploding diaper. Dumage's only surviving organ work is Premier livre d'orgue, published in * * * * *

5 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS 1 Samuel 3:1-10 (NRSV) Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2 At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3 the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the LORD called, Samuel! Samuel! and he said, Here I am! 5 and ran to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call; lie down again. So he went and lay down. 6 The LORD called again, Samuel! Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. But he said, I did not call, my son; lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. 8 The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, Here I am, for you called me. Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. 9 Therefore Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, Samuel! Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for your servant is listening. John 1:43-51 (NRSV) The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. 46 Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. 47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! 48 Nathanael asked him, Where did you come to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. 49 Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! 50 Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these. 51 And he said to him, Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. * * * * *

In the Presbyterian Church, ruling elders and deacons are ordained for life, but are installed to terms of service. Being ordained as Ruling Elders are Moon Han, Caridad Schweizer, and Hung-En Sung; installed as Ruling Elders are Paul Platek and Robert Ryder. As Deacons, Elise Andrianarivelo, Muriel Brantley, Cielo Camacho, Miguelina Happle, and Philip Tamis are being ordained; Arlene Mattis and Jean Rohloff are being installed. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those whose service as officers ended in 2017, including Elders Jill Strawbridge Bello, Richard Bennett and Philip Tamis, and Deacons Alan Aluska, Linda Heitner, Elizabeth Palo, Beverly Rhinehart, Caridad Schweizer, Michael Smolen, Jefferson Spady, and Hung-En Sung. Our Lay Assistant this morning is Jill Strawbridge Bello. Jill and her husband Andy became members of First Presbyterian Church in 1994, following the baptism of their son Michael here in Jill is a member of the Chancel Choir. Jill serves as an Elder on Session and is chair of the Worship & Music Committee. Jill is Of Counsel in real estate with the national law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP. The Bello family lives in Englewood Cliffs.
