The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be always acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord my strength and my redeemer. Hallelujah. 4 TODAY S MUSIC The music in today s service includes two organ settings of Luther s powerful chorale Ein fest Burg, the battle song for the Reformation, whose 500th Anniversary is celebrated this week. Jan Zwart ( ) was a Dutch organist and a pupil of H. van Eyk. After having been an organist of the Dutch Reformed Church in Rotterdam and Capelle aan den IJssel, he was appointed in 1898 in the same position at the Reformed Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amsterdam. Dietrich Buxtehude ( ) was the North German keyboard master whom the young J. S. Bach allegedly walked 200 miles to hear play and possibly study with. Besides his flamboyant Preludes for organ, Buxtehude wrote many settings of familiar Lutheran hymns. William Billings ( ) was America s first real composer. A native of Boston, he was a jack-of-all-trades and was strongly identified with the Singing School movement of the day to improve church music. Salone Clary (b. 1946) is the music director at Wesley AME Zion Church in Washington, DC and a public school educator. composer, and clinician throughout the United States, Canada, and Far East and currently resided in Florida. * * * * *

5 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Leviticus 19:15-18 (NRSV) You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the Lord. 17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. Matthew 22:34-46 (NRSV) When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? 37 He said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42 What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he? They said to him, The son of David. 43 He said to them, How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 44 The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son? 46 No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. * * * * *

10 COMING UP THIS WEEK A CONGREGATION MEETING to elect officers for 2018 will take place in Elmore Hall immediately following worship. All members are encouraged to stay for this brief meeting. COFFEE, COOKIES, & CONVERSATION is in the Chapel at 10 am and 12 noon. There you will also find many resources for seniors, and for families facing Dementia or Alzheimer's. The INFORMATION CENTERS in Elmore Hall and the Chapel have extra November Newsletters to invite a friend to your church, a sign-up for Chair-Assisted Yoga on November 1, 8, & 15. GOD'S CREATION Wall Calendars for 2018 can be purchased in the Chapel for only $8 sponsored by the Care Ministries Committee and have beautiful pictures and Scriptures. CHAIR-ASSISTED YOGA will be held on Wednesdays, November 1, 8 & 15 at 4 pm in the Chapel. You are welcome to join us for gentle yoga led by Analia Brown, a certified Yoga Instructor. Sign-up at Information Center in Elmore Hall or in the Chapel at Coffee & Conversation. It's only $5.00 per session. New members will then be received in the service of your choosing on Sunday, November 19. Center for Food Action needs volunteers to help with the THANKSGIVING TURKEY DISTRIBUTION right here at FPC. On Friday, November 17, spend a 2-3 hour shift between 9 am and 5 pm. You must be able to lift 20 lbs and you will be standing outside, rain or shine (or even snow).
