Help us to name our sin, claim responsibility for our actions, and change our behavior. Let the teachings of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our Savior, take control of our lives. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * * NOTES ON TODAY S MUSIC In Recognition of Dr. King s birthday holiday, today we sing a spiritual by Duke Ellington ( ). Ellington s Black Brown And Beige was composed in 1943, near the end of the swing era. The first movement contains one of the great American melodies Come Sunday. Originally written as a solo for the alto sax player Johnny Hodges, this 32-bar melody was rearranged by the composer for the great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson in Lift Every Voice and Sing, today s closing hymn, was first heard as a poem written by James Weldon Johnson and recited for Lincoln s birthday in Soon after, Johnson s brother John set it to music and it quickly took on the informal status of the Black National Anthem. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi ( ) was an Italian composer and organist. He is best known for launching the Italian opera buffo style with his opera La serva padrona, but he also composed sacred and instrumental music. He died aged 26 from tuberculosis. Gottfried August Homilius ( ) was one of the most important church music composers of the generation after Bach. Homilius was music director for the Lutheran churches in Dresden, Germany. Almost directly contemporary with Pergolesi, Homilius is one of the originators of the empfindsamer or sensitive stlye of music that lead directly to the Classical period. Echoes of Mozart can he heard in his music. Canadian organist Gerald Bales ( ) held church positions in Toronto and Minnesota. He taught at the University of Ottawa and served as president of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

5 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Isaiah 49:1-7 (NRSV) Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother s womb he named me. 2 He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. 3 And he said to me, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified. 4 But I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God. 5 And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strength 6 he says, It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. 7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.. John 1:29-42 (NRSV) The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me. 31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel. 32 And John testified, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God. 35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, Look, here is the Lamb of God! 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, What

6 are you looking for? They said to him, Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying? 39 He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter s brother. 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which is translated Anointed). 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. Joshua is a Junior at Tenafly High School. He was confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in 2015 and has served as a Deacon. He and his twin sister, Emily, were project managers for the Pumpkin Patch in Josh is an active youth who enjoys sports. He lives with his parents, Karen and Bob. A special candle on the Worship table celebrates the Birth of Cecil Maxen Villar on December 19, 2016, son of Cecil Villar and Nadia Murdock-Villar, and grandson of Shirley and Henry Murdock. This video was a part of the Catalyst Christian Leadership Conference and is also available on YouTube: MOBILIZE FOR MISSION: Canned Soup Drive All of FPC is invited to bring canned soup to the Souper Bowl of Caring to benefit the Center for Food Action. The FPC Church School is challenging everyone to bring in FIVE cans of soup and place in the collection center in the Chapel. Collections conclude on Super Bowl Sunday 2/5 when FPC youth will take the cans over to CFA. On February 5th, we will need 6 youth to transport our collection to the CFA-please contact Felicia@englewoodpres.org if you can help! FPC WOMEN S CONNECT GROUP, January 16 April 10, Mondays at 7 pm in the East Room Starting tomorrow night, FPC women are invited to join this weekly gathering to grow spiritually, support and encourage one another and share our experiences. We are very excited to start our third DVD study session about the lives of 12 women of the bible (six from the Old Testament and six from New Testament) and how their struggles and faith are similar to ours.
