When we sin, ignore the blame we heap on others and help us to see that the seeds of our sin are in our own hearts and minds. Forgive us for the wrongs we do and for the good we have failed to do. 5 TODAY S MUSIC The organ voluntaries and Introit today are based on the Reformation era Lutheran chorale Christ lag in Todesbanden. With words by Luther himself and music by Luther and Johann Walther, this is one of the oldest hymn tunes of the Reformation, first published in The melody is derived from the medieval Easter sequence Victimae paschali laudes and was adapted from the Catholic liturgy for Protestant use. Nearly 200 years later J. S. Bach, the greatest of Lutheran composers, composed several organ settings of this tune. BWV 718 (short for Bach Werke Vezseichnes, or catalogue of Bach s works) was composed around 1713 when he was organist at the court of Weimar. It displays his recent familiarity with the works of Vivaldi in the use of a recurring interlude, first heard as an introduction. BWV 625 was composed during the same period as part of the Little Organ Book a set of preludes on 46 hymn tunes. This collection has a four-fold purpose: it is a collection of organ music for church services, a treatise on composition, a religious statement, and an organ-playing manual. Josef Rheinberger ( ), a native of Liechtenstein, was a musical prodigy and a prolific composer, whose name is less recognized today than it should be. A contemporary of Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner, Rheinberger, combining in his larger works the late Romantic style of Brahms with the precision and complexity of Bach, produced compositions ranging from church music to operas, symphonies and concertos. Abendlied (Evening Song), written when the composer was just 16 years old, is one of the miniature gems of the choral repertoire. It is a setting of the words of the disciples on the road to Emmaus when they encounter Jesus, who they do not recognize: Stay with us, for evening upon us, and the day will soon be over. It is one of the few works by Rheinberger that is relatively well-known today. Carl Schalk (b. 1929) is a noted Lutheran musician and composer. He taught on the faculty of Concordia College. His hymn setting of Day of Arising was set for choir by David Cherwein (b. 1957), another distinguished Lutheran musician and improviser, who holds the position formerly held by Paul Manz at Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. * * * * *

To this we are witnesses. 16 And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you. 17 And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, Luke 24:36-48 (NRSV) While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, Peace be with you. 37 They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. 38 He said to them, Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have. 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, Have you anything here to eat? 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate in their presence. 44 Then he said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled. 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. * * * * *
