We confess the times we fail to involve ourselves in planting seeds of faith in the lives of others. We confess that our lives become too entangled with the values of the world. Renew our lives, strengthening our faith to bear the fruit of your mercy and your love. We pray this in the name of our Lord and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. 4 TODAY S MUSIC Jehan Alain ( ) was a promising young composer with an original voice in organ composition. His career was cut tragically short when he was killed in action in WWII. Litanies, perhaps his best known composition is prefaced with these words: "When, in its distress, the Christian soul can find no more words to implore the mercy of God, it repeats, times without end, the same fierce-faithed prayer. Reason reaches its limits and only belief can chase its flight." Mary Frances Allitsen ( ) was an English singer and composer. After some early success as a concert contralto, she felt that her voice was failing and she turned to composition and teaching voice students. She supported herself by constant travel to teach students, by which she could pay for her musical studies. She eventually made and American tour and her settings of poems by Browning, Shelley and the great poets were well received. Welsh composer William Mathias ( ) was a child piano prodigy. His many works for chorus, orchestra or organ bring a contemporary but accessible sound to sacred music. * * * * *

5 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Ezekiel 17:22-24 (NRSV) Thus says the Lord God: I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of a cedar; I will set it out. I will break off a tender one from the topmost of its young twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain. 23 On the mountain height of Israel I will plant it, in order that it may produce boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar. Under it every kind of bird will live; in the shade of its branches will nest winged creatures of every kind. 24 All the trees of the field shall know that I am the Lord. I bring low the high tree, I make high the low tree; I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken; I will accomplish it. Mark 4:26-34 (NRSV) He also said, The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, 27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how. 28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come. 30 He also said, With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? 31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; 32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. 33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; 34 he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples. * * * * *

WOMEN S CONNECT GROUP - At FPC, a group of women come together to grow spiritually, support and encourage one another and share our experiences. We will be covering What is the Bible? by Rob Bell. HOSTING FAMILIES THAT ARE HOMELESS: This year we are sponsoring four nights for Family Promise of Bergen County, a local organization that supports working families that are homeless. The dates are July 10th through 13th. We need volunteers who can provide dinner for 4-8 people plus a few breakfast items.
