Forgive us our disbelief at the thought of Jesus depending on us to be the bearers of hope to a world in need. Remind us that your love has been poured into our hearts. May your love transform us so that we minister to them in the name of Jesus and for his sake. 5 TODAY S MUSIC Franklin D. Ashdown is a composer and medical doctor, who has pursued dual careers for the past 3 decades. Born in 1942, he studied piano for 12 years, and was recruited at age 13 to play the organ for a local congregation. He later studied organ with Judson Maynard and James Drake, was was privately coached by Fred Tulan of San Francisco and Leonard Raver of New York's Juilliard School. Philip Wilby (b. 1947) is on the faculty of the University of Leeds. In addition to his many works for brass band, his sacred music reflects his strong Christian faith. J. Varley Roberts ( ) was Halifax Parish Church Organist and Director of the Choir of Magdalen College, Oxford. In addition to his anthem Seek Ye the Lord he is remembered for several hymn tunes that are now standard. Dutch-born composer and organist Jan Bender ( ) spent his early years studying and working in Germany before joining the faculty of Wittenburg University in Springfield, Ohio. There he was among the most influential Lutheran musicians in the country and was editor of the Lutheran Book of Worship. * * * * *

6 TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Exodus 19:2-8 (NRSV) They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. 3 Then Moses went up to God; the LORD called to him from the mountain, saying, Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4 You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6 but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites. 7 So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8 The people all answered as one: Everything that the LORD has spoken we will do. Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD. Romans 5:1-8 (NRSV) Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Indeed, rarely will anyone die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person someone might actually dare to die. 8 But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. * * * * *

7 WELCOME TO OUR WORSHIP Today s Ushers are: Emily Kahn, Captain Logan Beharry Avery DiMaria Joshua Kahn Today we are honored to celebrate the Baptism of Cecil Maxen Villar, born December 19, 2016 in Englewood, NJ to Cecil Villar and Nadia Murdock-Villar. The Lay Assistant this morning is Logan Beharry. Logan is 13 years old and an honor student in the Gifted and Talented program at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Logan is a talented musician who loves to play the sax. He is also an advanced mixed martial artist, currently a brown belt. This summer Logan will attend Princeton University for a three-week program for students with intellectual gifts as he prepares for the start of high school at Bergen County Academy in the Fall. Logan is the big brother to two siblings Kyle and Ella and takes his role seriously, always helping his mom and caring for his siblings This week is the last Sunday of the regular Chancel Choir season. During the summer, music will be provided by our soloists and the volunteer Summer Choir. Our deepest thanks and appreciation go to the dedicated members of the Chancel Choir. We invite all women who are part of the FPC community to join by participating this summer - our fourth DVD study session! We will be covering What Makes You Happy by Andy Stanley for six weeks.
