TODAYS MUSIC * * * * * The eight volumes of Songs Without Words, each consisting of six "songs", were written at various points throughout Mendelssohn's life. The first volume was published by Novello in London (1832) as Original Melodies for the Pianoforte. The title Song Without Words seems to have been Felix Mendelssohn's own invention. Malcolm Archer (b. 1952) is an English organist, conductor and composer. He combines this work with a recital career. Archer was formerly Organist and Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral, and is now Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College. Today s anthem is a setting of a 4 th C. Hymn by Ambrose of Milan. The translation into English was by the gifted 19 th C. poet J. M. Neal, who was said to be deeply steeped in medieval Latin. The music of Everett Titcomb ( ) occupies a unique niche among sacred organ and choral works by 20th-century Anglican composers in the United States. His style was clearly influenced by the Bostonian giants of his youth (Dudley Buck, Horatio Parker--who's mother once had Titcomb as a border) as well as his affinity for French music. He spent fifty years nearly to the day ( ) as organist and choirmaster at Boston's Church of St. John the Evangelist, an historic church that was recently merged out of existence and redeveloped as luxuty condos. Dietrich Buxtehude ( ). was the North German keyboard master whom the young J. S. Bach allegedly walked 200 miles to hear play and possibly study with. He developed the form of organ music that

5 came to be called Prelude and Fugue. His works often contain difficult pedal passages, but several of them, such as today s fugue, could be played on any keyboard instrument and don t specifically notate a pedal part. * * * * * TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Proverbs 8:22-31 NRSV) The LORD created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. 23 Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. 24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. 25 Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth 26 when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world s first bits of soil. 27 When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, 28 when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, 29 when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, 30 then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, 31 rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race. Romans 5:1-5 (NRSV) Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3 And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Sherronda joined First Presbyterian Church, along with her husband Stephen this past fall. She and her family have regularly attended First Presbyterian Church since the birth of their twin daughters, Alexandra and Virginia. The Browns are delighted to be a part of a FPC family where they can continue to grow in their relationship with God. Englewood residents, the Browns take great pride in the "community" that is Englewood. They are looking forward to becoming more active in the mission and community work of the church.

FPC FIRE RECOVERY AND FUNDRAISING UPDATE Save the Date: Saturday June 4 at 2 p.m. & Sunday June 5 at 2 p.m. -Englewood local business NycRugs.com (owners Ofer Ben Aharon and Liat) is holding a June Brunch & Auction of their Designer Rugs. They have alerted their customers that a generous portion of the proceeds will be directed toward FPC Fire Recovery. Patisserie Florentine is donating the food and FPC members are encouraged to stop by and watch the fun. Look for the Rugs.com mailer that will be sent to FPC friends. Please plan to drop by! The auction will be at NYCRugs.com which is located right off Palisade Ave. on South Dean Street (the former Mitchell Simon) at 15 South Dean Street, Englewood NJ Join us Sunday June 12 for an FPC ALL-CHURCH PICNIC following worship. It will be a special time to gather and we ll update the community about the launch of our FPC fundraising campaign for fire recovery efforts and community partnerships. We ll have a tent and this June 12 picnic will be rain or shine.

11 MOBILIZE FOR MISSION: Stuff the Closet May Clothing Collection - Let s Stuff Their Closets! FPC Partner Church Jan Hus and their Urban Outreach Center need our help! One of the UOC s programs provides free clothing for hundreds of men, women and children each week. As we move through spring, their closets are becoming bare. So, let s help the homeless get a fresh start! Look for the RED BIN at Sunday Coffee & Conversation. There you can drop off your donations of gently used men s, women s and children's clothes. Key items for both men and women include: Socks Clean undergarments Pants and shirts Children always look for princesses and superheroes :-). *Save the Date Tuesday June 14 at 5:30 p.m.: FPC heads to Jan Hus in NYC to deliver these items and feed the homeless.
