FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF ENGLEWOOD LIVE boldly SHARE boundlessly GROW community BUILD God s world July 2, 2017 Eleven o clock THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THE GATHERING The service of worship begins with the prelude; quiet is requested as you enter the sanctuary and prepare for worship. In the spirit of Christian fellowship, we invite you to wear a name tag which is available from the greeters. As a community that prays with and for one another, we invite you to share your joys and concerns by using the prayer cards available from the ushers. Those parts of the Service of Worship in which the congregation participates in word or song are noted in bold type. Please stand as you are able. PRELUDE If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee Böhm * HYMN 262 God of the Ages, Whose Almighty Hand National Hymn WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Gracious and merciful God, we know that sin controls many lives today. Our lack of involvement with the pain and problems of our neighbors abandons people to the power of sin. When we use our gifts to further our own ambitions rather than to build others up, forgive us. God of grace and mercy, help us to free ourselves of habits that are destructive to ourselves and others. May we instead be obedient to the demands of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen. * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. TIME WITH CHILDREN + Children and Youth leave for Church School. + * EXCHANGE OF PEACE Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified. People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. (Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Response - And also with you. ) * HYMN 370 Just as I Am, Without One Plea Woodworth THE WORD PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 28:5-9 ANTHEM Thou Shalt Break Them Handel RAVON MIDDLEBROOKS, TENOR SECOND LESSON Romans 6:12-23 SERMON Freedom Rev. Richard S. Hong

THE OFFERING OFFERTORY Come, Ye Blessed John Prindle Scott RAVON MIDDLEBROOKS, TENOR * THE DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Creator, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. THE SENDING OUT * HYMN 276 Great Is Thy Faithfulness Faithfulness * BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Procession Arnatt Our worship ends with the conclusion of the Postlude. (It is the custom of our church to remain seated. Those who wish to leave may do so.) * * * * *

TODAY S MUSIC Georg Böhm ( ) was a North German baroque organist. He is best know for having taught the young J. S. Bach when he was a student in Lüneburg, where Böhm was organist. One of the flashier arias from Handel s 1741 Messiah sets the text of Psalm II: 9 and places it in the context of God s triumph over the unbelievers. John Prindle Scott ( ) was an American musician and educator. After training at Oberlin College, he began a notable career as a concert baritone, but this was cut short by increasing deafness. As a result he turned to composition for his musical expression. British organist Ronald Arnatt (b. 1930) emigrated to the U.S. and has held positions at Westminster Choir College and Trinity Church, Boston. * * * * *

TODAY S SCRIPTURE READINGS Jeremiah 28:5-9 (NRSV) Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD; 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles. 7 But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet. Romans 6:12-23 (NRSV) Therefore, do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13 No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. 15 What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, 18 and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19 I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. 20 When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. * * * * *
