1 Northbrook Notes October 2014 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter Get Your Affairs in Order Save the Saturdays for Adult Education this Fall Live the Love of Jesus Christ Northbrook Church will be hosting three very important Saturday programs for caregivers, families, friends and seniors that are open to the entire community. Beginning on October 4 and continuing on November 1 and November 15, these events will provide answers to the many questions you have regarding issues with the senior population. These Saturday sessions are not only just for seniors, they are for those who have parents in or entering their senior years or who are trying to plan ahead to their own senior years. Planning for the future is a little unsettling as we think about uncertain, hard-to-face situations and our inevitable aging and end-times of our lives. With your questions answered and knowledge of where to go for help when you need it, the path will be smoother. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 4 Getting Organized Session 1: Navigating Longevity and Securing Your Assets Mark Steinberg, personal financial expert and Senior Vice President of the BLS Group of UBS Financial will be discussing how to protect your assets throughout your life. He brings a wealth of knowledge and will be happy to answer questions following his presentation. Session 2: Elder Law Tips Jim Schuster, Certified Elder Law Attorney, will get you the help you need! Jim will share his extensive knowledge regarding the laws affecting our seniors and their families. He is approachable and speaks in terms everyone can understand. Jim will cover topics such as Medicaid and Medicare, guardianship, durable and health care powers of attorney, legal documents and more. Plan to attend one, two or three Saturdays. Call the church office (248) or check out the church website for complete descriptions of each Saturday morning program. There is no charge for attendance and pre-registration is encouraged. Each Saturday will run from 9:00 am to Noon. For questions, call Sherrill Heinrichs, Director of Church Education, at (248) or her at sherrill@northbrookpc.org.

2 Business of the Congregation Farewell Reception of Larry Brown Please join us at a farewell reception during Coffee Hour on Sunday, October 19. Larry has faithfully served as Northbrook s custodian and caretaker for over 14 years. He has always treated the church as if it were his home and routinely went above and beyond his responsibilities. His dedication and commitment to the church will be greatly missed, and we wish him well on this next chapter of his life. If you would like to donate to a farewell gift for Larry, please drop off your donation to the church office by October 15th. The Fall Preaching Series Continues: The Kingdom of Heaven is Abundant! As Christians, we rest in the truth that God has abundantly provided for creation and for us. There is more than enough to fill our needs, to release us from fear, to be shared with others. Into this anxious world, we proclaim a generous God who knows our every need, loves us dearly and grants us the freedom to stop worrying, and instead, to live into the radical love of Jesus Christ which knows no end. Rejoice and be glad! October 5: World Communion Sunday: The Open Well Abundant Hospitality October 12: Guest Preacher (Women s Retreat) October 19: Extravagant Love Abundant Generosity October 25: New Heaven and New Earth Abundant Hope On this mountain The Lord of Hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. ~ Isaiah 25:6 Northbrook Church will be holding a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, November 2. 4 Congregational Life Northbrook Preschool We are back in school having a great time. The 4 and 5 year olds have studied all about insects. We can count out six legs, three body parts, two antennae and two eyes. We even have a song to sing about it!! The two and a half and three year olds have been learning to recognize their names, shapes, and, most importantly, to share and wait their turn... a very difficult task! We are still accepting students. Please spread the word about our wonderful preschool. You can learn more by visiting our website at and you can keep up with us by liking us on Facebook. 5 Worship and Music The Good News Circus came to Northbrook on Sunday, September 21, 2014 for a special worship celebration filled with humor and hope. The service was followed by a festival of ministries and missions of Northbrook.

6 Congregational Life Meet Michael and Kathy Bauhof The story of how Michael and Kathy (Kathryn) Bauhof met and married may strike some folks as a tale of coincidences, but to them, it will always be the hand of God. In fact, it even suggests the Lord has a sense of humor. These two smile and laugh together as they relate their how we met story. Kathy was born and raised in Grand Rapids. As she grew up, she had a girlfriend who worked in a local bike shop. Michael Bauhof and his family moved to Grand Rapids from Philadelphia when he was in the sixth grade. Eventually, he went to work in the same bike shop and became acquainted with Kathy s girlfriend. Kathy says, Michael and I met when we were college age. He still liked my girlfriend. She introduced us at a party, and he really didn t like me because we left early to go drive my new car! After that, he moved to Texas and later returned to Grand Rapids. Meantime, she had graduated from Blodgett School of Nursing in Grand Rapids and moved to Lansing. When she was home for a weekend, they met again and this time, she says, We fell in love. We were both 23. Michael smiles saying, Without question we were meant to meet. My life journey is surely guided by God s hand. Early on, that journey hit a few bumps in the road, but nothing they couldn t handle. Kathy grew up in the Reformed Church which she says was strict stricter than the Presbyterian Church. Michael grew up in the Catholic Church, and neither family was, to put it mildly, pleased with this union even though as Kathy says, We went through counseling on both sides. Michael adds, That gives you an idea of the parochial attitudes at that time. Still, love won that round and the ones to follow. After 32 years of marriage, Kathy and Michael and their three, now adult children, each continue to work at their chosen professions. Saying emphatically, I love the arts - the whole design process, Michael, with degrees in art from Aquinas College and Kendall School of Design, both in Grand Rapids, and then industrial design at Western, now designs plastic power train components for a Plymouth, MI firm. She says, I ve been a nurse for 36 years - mostly working part-time. I ve been at Beaumont [Hospital] for 30 years. I ve worked in OB (Obstetrics) and Pediatrics, surgical floor nursing, ICU and Anesthesia pre-screening which is what I m doing now. I m able to work from home half the time just in the past year. I can do the pre-screening over the phone, and it s all on the computer. All that took place while raising their now-grown children Megan, Matthew and Hannah who are well on their way to their own outstanding careers. One amazing fact remains. When they were looking at houses in this area with Megan, their firstborn only six weeks old, Kathy recalls, I saw this church (Northbrook) and said we should go there. said, it looks big and probably unfriendly. We did. A man who sat next to us (they don t remember his name) talked to us and told us all about the church. Whoever he was, he made us believers. When we moved to Troy, we couldn t leave Northbrook behind. Michael fills in more of the story saying those regular Sunday morning commutes to Northbrook Church in Beverly Hills from their home in Troy became, Our favorite times together as a family along with our dinner table where we always have devotions. In addition to their careers, they both serve Northbrook Church in many ways. She s on Session and chairs the Children s Ministry Committee. Michael helps on alternating Sundays operating the Soundboard and is Second Mile Center Board President. He says, Second Mile Center is serving the community and doing a great job. Except for their beloved dog, Finny, a Schnoodle, Kathy and Michael are empty-nesters, but that doesn t mean things are quiet at home. Daughter Megan just recently married Tom Hardin and they will be leaving this year to teach school in the Czech Republic. Matthew, now in his final year at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, plans to marry his fiancée Mary Pat Brogan in the fall of Hannah is still working and living in Chicago. 7 Congregational Life Ryan Rocks Square Dance Fun Level Square Dance - No Experience Necessary! Featuring Caller Walt Zatorski Sunday, October 5 at Northbrook Church 2:00-5:00 pm An event for the entire family! Adults $10 Kids $5 Bake Sale 50/50 Raffle Silent Auction (adults and kids) All proceeds go to Ryan Rocks Outdoor Adventures Greetings from Northbrook Rose, Greetings to those who are over seventy years of age. Here s a walk down memory lane. We remember the days when wedding and graduation pictures were in black and white. We called polio infantile paralysis. We knew who Sonja Henie was. Dope was a stupid person, grass is what we mowed and crack was if you stepped on it, you broke your mother's back. We thought that Euthanasia meant little Chinese children living in China. We actually had measles. We thought that if you had aids you had assistants. Being gay meant you were happy and lively. We remember the Detroit Times, Holden red stamps and defense stamps. We rode in a street car and met our friends under the Kerns clock. We swam in the Rouge and Crystal pools. We shopped at Demery's, Epps, Winkleman's, and Hudson's. We listened to the Four Freshmen at the Crest Lounge, we danced to Stan Kenton at the Walled Lake Casino. We heard Frank Sinatra at the Fox Theater. We had hamburgers at Powers, Cregars. Sno-White and Richard's Drive-in Cafeteria. We know what a schmo is and who Kilroy was. We knew how to Delphoi. All in all, we have made it this far and are in pretty good shape. We have survived, and that is more than we can say for the Edsel, downtown Hudson's and Pinkie Lee. We still drink Vernors Ginger Ale and that is good. Blessings from my house to your house, Rose

The request is for clothing for both men and women in sizes large, x-large, and xx-large everything! You get the idea...clothing that can be layered for additional warmth. On the morning of Thursday October 30th, we will gather at 8:00 am to drive down together in the van to serve these guests in whatever capacity needed. Come join us. All are welcome. We will likely stop for lunch together afterwards. For more information, call Seglinda at (248) The Trappist monk Thomas Merton reminds us, It is easy enough to tell the poor to accept their poverty as God's will when you yourself have warm clothes and plenty of food and medical care and a roof over your head and no worry about the rent. But if you want them to believe you--try to share some of their poverty and see if you can accept it as God's will yourself. Blessings! Seglinda Kelle-Pritchard
