1 Notes February 2019 Presbyterian Church Newsletter A Note From Your Temporary Shepherd on THE INTERIM PROCESS O Lord, I am your servant; I will offer to you a thanksgiving sacrifice And call on the name of the Lord. Praise the Lord! Psalm 116 Live the Love of Jesus Christ Church life is full of wonderful surprises. If we allow God to show us the spectrum of beauty that fills the world, we will never cease to be amazed. We never know how God s mystery and majesty will touch our lives next. That is the joy and anticipation that fills the heart of the Christian. For me, God s glory has drawn me to this place to serve as your Interim Pastor. I am humbled and awed by the opportunity to share the good news of God s love with Presbyterian Church. The Interim time can be an exciting chapter in a congregation s life, while presenting the church with a time of spiritual growth and clarity. It is a journey that can be stimulating and fulfilling, even though it is sometimes accompanied with uncertainty about the future and emotions of grief over the former Pastor s leaving. My sense is that with the ongoing health of this congregation, you will weather this time well. I am pleased that you chose me to walk along beside you as you travel down this path. I see the Interim journey as one of possibilities filled with new ways to explore the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ. The first chapter during the Interim stage is the Self-Study phase, a time in which you, the members of the congregation, define who you are and how you want to serve God in the future. This is done under the direction of a self study committee elected by the Session. The self study committee will help to answer many questions. For what does this congregation hunger and thirst? What is at the heart and soul of how you want the church to look and feel in the future? How can you best be servants of the Lord in this place? And, how can you best Praise God? Then, once this committee has completed its task another committee called a Pastoral Nominating Committee (or PNC) will be elected by the congregation. It is their task to gather Dossiers, interview potential candidates for the position of minister and finally present a candidate to the congregation. At all times, the congregation will be kept informed of where these committees are in the process. During this whole progression, I am here to encourage you, to guide you and to help you as you make decisions about where the road will lead. And, I am thankful! With Blessings and Joy, Pastor Anne N. Schaefer

Camp Lock-In Our Camp Lock-In is scheduled from Friday March 22nd at 7pm until 9:30am for 1st-12th graders. This is an opportunity for youngsters to see what camp is like and try-out a night away from home. Bring a sleeping bag, pillows, and toiletries and we will provide a snack Friday night and breakfast Saturday morning. Admission is $10. Mission Connection Children s Bedding Drive Benefitting the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan Items Due by Sunday, February 3 There s still time to donate! On a weekly basis, the Furniture Bank of SE Michigan provides beds to more than 15 area children who are living in poverty, transitioning from homelessness, working with child protective services or fleeing crisis and abuse. We can provide these children with some comfort and cheer with the gift of new Twin Size sheet sets, comforters and mattress covers. A complete twin bedding set in a bag is another great option. Now is a great time to shop for these items due to the White Sales in retail stores. During these cold winter months, let s share some love and care as we support this mission initiative. We will collect the new bedding packages in the main hallway near the nametag table. Please contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at (248) or winsomeann@aol.com if you have any questions.

Book Club Monday, February 25 Please join in the discussion of My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie on Monday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. From the New York Times bestselling authors of America s First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal and tragedy. Haunting, moving and beautifully written, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza s story as it s never been told before, not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal, but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right. The Book Club meets every 6 weeks on Monday and is always looking for new readers! Please mark your calendars with 2019 dates and scheduled books: April 8 News of the World by Paulette Jiles May 20 The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin July 1 Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman August 12 Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult September 23 The Map of Salt and Stars by Jennifer Joukhadar November 4-The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce December 16- The Woman in the Window by A.J. 4 In the know! is a generous congregation, routinely donating to our neighbors in need. But, did you ever wonder where your donations go? Our monthly food collections on communion Sundays have been delivered to The Baldwin Center in Pontiac and to Open Door Outreach Center in Waterford. In January, we donated over 73 lbs. of food to the Open Door Outreach Center. The hats and mittens from the Mitten Tree were given away to guests at the Welcome Inn and later delivered to the Oakland County Jail Prison Ministry center in Pontiac. Staff and volunteers at all locations have been very appreciative of your generosity. If you contributed to the Mission Connection s Hat and Mitten Tree and/or Cans for Communion collections, thank you! You have made a difference in the health and comfort of many fellow children of God. Meet Our New Mission Co-Workers: Jhanderys Dotel-Vellenga and Ian Vellenga has prayerfully and financially supported Justin and Renee Sundberg as mission co-workers in Nicaragua for years. However, the Sundbergs felt called to serve God in other ways and have returned to the States. Continuing to feel called to help those in Nicaragua, and with the recommendation of the Sundbergs, the Mission Connection Committee decided to move our co-worker financial support to the ministry of the Vallengas. Jhanderys Dotel-Vellenga and Ian Vellenga serve in Nicaragua with the Council of Protestant Churches in Nicaragua (CEPAD) which works to improve the lives of economically impoverished communities by promoting justice and peace. Working closely with their Nicaraguan colleagues and supervisors, Ian and Jhanderys (pronounced John-de-Reese) assist in CEPAD s international partnership program, helping to coordinate U.S. church delegation visits, develop new partnerships as requested by CEPAD leadership, facilitate communication between partner bodies, and encourage and accompany partnerships as they deepen their connection and understanding of doing mission together.
