Also, everyone needs to get with your table and plan your food and beverage - none will be provided although the Maryland Hgts Center does have a soda machine and a snack machine. Also, the center has a policy against anything in glass. That applies to nonalcohol and alcohol beverages. Cans, plastic bottles, etc are permissible. Please do not bring glass, glasses. The theme is: Through the Ages. The night should be filled with great fun and will include these games: 50/50, heads/tails and high/low. The Presbyterian Women will be selling quilt raffle tickets at Trivia Night. SUNDAY WORSHIP ON OCTOBER 8 Written around 50 years after Jesus to the church in the bustling city of Philippi, we will look at Philippians 4:6 and 7 as we continue in the fall sermon series THE VERSE AFTER THE VERSE. You will find verse 6 rather familiar as it speaks about being anxious and not to worry, but give it all to God. Now verse seven well, that talks about finding peace true peace. The peace is related to us addressing anxiousness and subsequent worry. Don't worry It will all make sense on Sunday. See you then! ALSO THIS SUNDAY 10/8 WOMEN S MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP Last Sunday we watched the 2nd part of the movie Evan Almighty and then discussed what it means for us to keep an ear out for God and how we listen for God to speak to us. Some of the discussion centered on the many ways we can hear from God, and how the Spirit speaks to those that are listening. To hear God s voice, or the voice of his Spirit, does not mean that as a rule, one hears audible words that no one else does. It s more that God s voice is heard through our conscience, our convictions, in ideas that pop into our heads, in pictures or visions or ideas that come fresh to us. His voice can also be heard through our study or memory of Scripture, or even songs we know by heart. And certainly, His voice can be heard through the words of others. All women are welcome to participate in this group discussion of the movie, Evan Almighty. We meet from 9:30-10:25am in the church library. AFTER CHURCH THIS SUNDAY There will be a meeting for the Haunted House this Sunday. Brian Shear is the organizer. Anyone that wants to help decorate and run the haunted house, please attend the meeting in the Warehouse. Also Sunday, there will be a meeting for the Halloween Fun House, organized by Mary Ridge and Megan Buscher. All are welcome that want to help with this. 2 MEN'S BIBLE STUDY I am so excited to begin the Men's Bible Study on Saturday, October 14, at 9:00am in the adult Sunday School Room #106. THEY FOLLOWED AFTER JESUS will be our topic. We will look at the disciples using the Bible, the Didache (a book written by the disciples) and the church records of their travels and their death. Then we will study Paul and his contribution to the growing church. We will look at some of the early church leaders who were in many was sort-of-strange but they kept the church going, up until the time of Constantine when Christianity became to religion of the Roman Empire. New members are always welcome and all the material will be produced by Pastor John. Some of the men meet at McDonalds at 8:30 for breakfast before our gathering at 9:00. We are done by 10:00. They are in a basket on the Signup Table. GOLDTIMERS SYBERG S There will be a luncheon and meeting for the Goldtimers on October 13 at 11:30. The guest speaker, Brian Dillard, will give a presentation on Medicare and Medicare supplements. Please use the signup sheet to let us know that you plan to come. FLU SHOT CLINIC The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each fall. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is offering free flu shots to those in our community who would otherwise not have access to one. All doses will be administered on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. If you have any questions about free community flu shots, communityoutreach@bjc.org. SIGNUP PLEASE! We need decorated cars for the Trunk-Or-Treat on 10/28 and some folks that will hand out candy to the trick or treaters. Mary Myers is organizing this and would like you to signup if you plan to decorate your car and hand out candy or if you would like to come and help BAKED GOODS NEEDED We are looking for people who enjoy baking to donate baked goods for the Fall Festival. All types of goodies are needed: cakes, pies, cookies, etc. CHARLENE HADGGEGA BIRD SANCTUARY The Work Weekend at Mound Ridge will be November Saturday, 11/11, there will be a 1:00 dedication of the Charlene Hadggega Memorial Bird Sanctuary at Mound Ridge. Explore the ways that we have been socialized in white privilege and supremacy. What is institutional racism, how does it function in our everyday lives, and how can we talk about it more effectively? Practice challenging racism in a supportive space. For details please visit the Presbytery of Giddings-Lovejoy page. The picture to the right shows Pastor John taking a phone call during last Sunday's Community Sharing. The call was from Mark Baker who is recovering from major cancer surgery and is getting better each day. Mark wanted to thank the congregation for their support, their prayers, their cards, their visits and all the good wishes for recovery. Mark also shared that this trial has had three miracles. The first miracle was that his original surgery was scheduled for later in September but Mark got a call that the surgery had been moved to the first weekend in September. After the surgery, one of the surgeons shared with Mark that is was a good thing they moved the date up because based upon what they saw, he would not have been alive later in September. The second miracle occurred during the surgery. The tumor was being fed by large blood vessels and as they went to extract the tumor, Mark experienced a sudden loss of blood. The surgery took eleven and a half hours and he had to be given fourteen units of blood. At least once during the surgery his blood pressure dropped to zero, but they were able to revive him. Then the third miracle. After the surgery, Mark developed a major infection in his abdominal area. Fearing this would become dangerous, the surgeon suggested opening him up again to drain the infection to give the antibiotics a chance to work. Mark did not want to go through yet another surgery. So the night before the surgery, Mark held on to a cross that one of his patients had given him and he prayed all night for God to intervene and make it so he did not need the surgery. That morning when they did their first blood draw, the indicators of infection had dropped by more than a third and the decision was made he did not need the surgery. Mark is at home, gaining strength everyday and he was able to go outside for the first time last week. Yes, God is full of miracles. All we have to do is trust and ask and then sit back and watch God at work. What a testimony! Thanks be to God!
