Notes April 2017 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter Holy Week at Northbrook Entering Jerusalem, Palm Sunday. There will be a nice light brunch for all in Fellowship Hall. During this time, the children also will be invited to participate in an egg hunt outdoors. Egg collection bags, treats and brunch will be provided, free of charge to all, by the Children's Ministry Committee. We encourage all members and their families to please attend service and stay afterward for this fun event.
Set time aside during Holy Week In our anticipation of Easter, let s not miss the opportunity for reflection that Holy Week offers us. For nearly 2000 years, Christians have dedicated the days leading up to Easter to draw close to God. This is a time to refocus our hearts, minds and lives by intentionally setting aside everything else and, as Henri Nouwen says, making time and space to give God our undivided attention, finding ways to come into God s loving, healing and transforming presence. The Prayer Labyrinth and Spirituality Center One way to do this is by committing time during Holy Week to visit the Spirituality Center and prayer labyrinth in Fellowship Hall. In this peaceful space, dedicate time to coloring big posters depicting the Stations of the Cross. Using brand new boxes of crayons, come and color these ready-made posters, read the Biblical story and think about the events that took place during Holy Week. In addition, walk the prayer labyrinth, journal, create or just be still. The labyrinth is a place where you can release stress, pray, bring your grief or a question, find healing or participate in a walking meditation that quiets your mind allowing your spirit to become more receptive to the still small voice of God. If you are new to the labyrinth there will be an information sheet to guide you on your walk. There is no right or wrong way to walk. Just come and put one foot in front of the other. Sherrill Heinrichs will also be available to introduce you to the labyrinth. Just give her a call at the church and let her know when you would want to meet. The prayer labyrinth and spirituality center will be open from April 10 through April 14 as follows: Monday Wednesday: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and again at 6 pm before the Holy Thursday service and then afterwards Friday: 9 a.m.-11:00 a.m. before the Good Friday service Fred Wyckoff will be celebrating his 90th birthday on April 2 and the whole congregation is invited to a special coffee hour to commemorate this special occasion after church service in Fellowship Hall. Please plan on being there to express your best wishes to Fred on his special day! Your Northbrook Deacons
Fun and Games Night Grab your friends and your family and your favorite snacks and come to Game Night on Friday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Manse. We will have cards and board games or bring a favorite game you would like to play. Adults may bring a favorite beverage. We will supply pop. WANTED Painters, rakers, carpenters, hedge-clippers, etc. for REBUILD DAY: Saturday, April 29 For the last several years, Northbrook members have unleashed their painting, raking, sawing, plumbing and hedge-clipping skills to assist a person with a disability or a needy local resident through the Rebuilding Together-Oakland County program called Rebuild Day. Last year, more than 20 Northbrook volunteers did an amazing amount of work for a Southfield resident. This year s Rebuild Day is Saturday, April 29. So far, we have 15 volunteers signed up, but there s always room for more folks of any skill level. This is a terrific opportunity for service and fellowship. If you are interested (and you know you are), please contact Carl von Ende by at vonende@millercanfield.com. 4 SOS Save the Date We will be hosting South Oakland County Shelter from May 28 to June 4. We need many helpers to host our guests from security, meal prep, drivers and entertainment. We also need monetary donations. Sign up sheets will be out in April. Contact Barb Stetson at (248) or with questions. LINEN DRIVE FOR SOS In preparation for our week hosting SOS (5/28-6/4), we will hold a linen drive to help them restock their depleted supply. Starting Sunday, April 23, there will be a labeled bin in the hall near the name tag table for your linen donations. Here s a list of what they need: Sheets (both top & fitted) and blankets TWIN size only regular length Standard pillow cases Regular bath size towels, and washcloths We are asking for NEW linens only. They don t need to be fancy, just new, and there are some great deals out there! Empty Bowls Collection for SOS All of our Empty Bowls loose change and other contributions will go into the mission fund designated for South Oakland Shelter (S.O.S.) this year. This will allow us to build up our source of funds for Northbrook s hosting and/or support of S.O.S. Please contribute your loose change in the bowl on the nametag table in the main hallway. We are also in need of larger amounts or checks for our upcoming hosting week at the end of May. Checks can be made out to Northbrook with the notation for Empty Bowls on the memo line and taken to the church office. Thank you for your generosity and support! One Great Hour of Sharing Offering During Lent Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing helps to improve the lives of people around the world. Our offering provides us a way to share God s love with our neighbors in need. We are able to make a positive, meaningful difference in the world through three impactful programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, The Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People. We can live the love of Jesus Christ with our gifts to help those who lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity, and to those who face the aftermath of a disaster. Please give generously using your OGHS envelope in your offering envelope pad or with a general pew envelope, noting that your offering is for OGHS on the notation line of your check. Thank you from the Sundberg Family The Sundberg family sends their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the Christmas cards they received from Northbrook Church members.
Northbrook Book Club Monday, April 24 Everyone is invited to participate in this lively discussion group. We meet every 6 weeks on Monday in the Library. Please join in as we discuss the historical fiction novel, The Aviator s Wife by Melanie Benjamin on April 24 at 7:00 p.m. The book summary: When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life s infinite possibilities for change and happiness. Upcoming Book Club Dates June 5: The Dinner by Herman Koch, July 17, Aug 28, Oct 9, Nov 20, Jan 8, Feb 12 Snow Greets BLIGHT BUSTERS Big, fat snowflakes swirled around the intersection of Lahser Road and Grand River Avenue on Saturday, March 18 as about 25 Presbyterian men and several women attacked four abandoned storefronts, removing drywall, tile flooring and other debris in order to prepare those buildings for repurposing as community resources. Northbrook Church was well represented with Michael Campion, Todd Dolan, Bill Hancock and Carl von Ende participating in the project. The weather proved no problem as the volunteers were fortified with chicken and waffles, black-eyed pea and collard green soup and other delicacies from Sweet Potato Sensations, our excellent lunch stop. Kudos to Detroit Blight Busters for sponsoring this excellent event! Senior Souper LUNCH Senior Souper Lunch will continue to meet at 1:00 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Thursday. Yummy soup, salad, bread and dessert are on the menu. Open to all seniors. No reservations required. Join us in the Library on April 13 and April 27. Northbrook Knit Wits Please join us on Wednesday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 26 at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome.
Northbrook Preschoolers have been very busy. Our dads came to our school on a Sunday and played with us. We have been learning about all of the different animals you find Under the Sea. We are having so much fun playing and learning about letters, numbers and phonics too! We still have openings for our fabulous program so tell all of your friends and neighbors what a wonderful place Northbrook Preschool would be for their child. We would like you to be our advocates and spread the word. We think we are the best kept secret and want to let others experience all our preschool has to offer. We can be reached at (248) , ext. 16. or visit our web page at One World Sunday On Sunday, March 5, about 45 Northbrook members and guests enjoyed a delicious family roots and heritage international potluck dinner. Prior to dinner, the group viewed the short documentary film, Locked in a Box. Deb Drennan, Executive Director of Freedom House Detroit and John Yim, a case manager from Samaritas which is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and is the largest faith-based non-profit human service organization in Michigan, answered questions about the film. They also gave additional information about the immigration process in the U.S. We also heard from the six residents from Freedom House who joined us for the event; they shared what Freedom House has meant to them.
Im/Migration Stations of the Cross Exhibit For just short of two weeks in the first half of March, Northbrook featured the Im/Migration Stations of the Cross Art Exhibit in Fellowship Hall. The exhibit was curated by Grace Commons, a house church in Chicago featuring participant-led worship services held in homes and public places. The 15 stations featured 11 original art pieces by many individual artists, organizations and church congregations. It was an honor for Northbrook s Mission Connection Committee to bring this powerful and meaningful exhibit to our local community. We want to thank Jennifer Livernois for transporting the exhibit from Chicago, Marjorie and Jeff Wilhelmi for returning the exhibit and Tricia and Frank LaSota for providing the use of their truck for both trips. Just some of the comments left by those who visited the exhibit: I was really moved by the prayer at Station 14. Extremely powerful tears at your heart for what immigrants live with everyday. Powerful strong reminder to show God s love to all! Amazing! Thank you for sharing this moving Stations of the Cross! Thank you! God bless you. A reminder of where I came from, where I am, and where I am going.
