1 Northbrook Presbyterian Church January 19, 2014 The question of Who Are You? often starts with a name. In the scriptures, people begin to describe Jesus by many names Rabbi, Messiah, Lamb of God as they tried to understand who this special person was. What descriptors do you want to be known with? Who has God called you to be? Life in the Community of Faith Welcome to Northbrook! Please sign and pass the Welcome Register along your row and back. Please note joys and concerns on the Prayer Request Cards and place them in the offering. * Opening Prayer Winnie Davies-Hancock One: You speak, God you always speak, if we will but listen; All: All we need to do is pause, and turn our attention to the song from the heavens, whispering in the wind; to the flight of the dove, and the touch of its wings on our spirits; to the flowing water, and the mark it leaves in our hearts. One: Your voice comes to us in faithful surround sound, beckoning us to join the chorus, share in the dance, and extend the invitation into all the earth. All: You speak, God you always speak; and joyfully, we are listening. * Opening Song 467 How Great Thou Art Hymnal Prayer of Reconciliation All: You choose to give us as a light to the nations, so your salvation may reach the ends of the earth, yet we fail to know your saving power even to the ends of our heart. You call us to be your servant, but we are quickly discouraged because we think we labor in vain. From you, each day, comes all our strength, still we spend it for nothing and vanity. Forgive us, Lord, the sins we know in our heart. Save us from the sins we hide. Lord, from our mother s womb, you know us. Restore your will in us, write your instructions in our heart. Amen. Silent Prayer
2 Assurance of Pardon * The Peace As we are reconciled to God and to one another, share a sign of Christ s peace and love with your neighbor. Children are invited to go to KIDS Connection at this time * Response of Unity This Little Light of Mine This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine (3x), Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine Hide it under a bushel, no! I'm gonna let it shine (3x), Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine Let it shine all over the world, I'm gonna let it shine (3x), Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine Scripture Reading Psalm 139:1-18 OT p. 577 Responsive reading: Congregation reads the even verses Song He Knows My Name Tommy Walker Verse Three I have a family The body of Christ One in community With Christians everywhere. Last Refrain: God knows my name God keeps my life I m rooted in God s love My help comes from God s hand.

5 The Story of Christianity Tracing the origins and development of our faith Do you ever wonder how Christianity came to be? How did it happen that an unknown itinerant teacher in rural Palestine had such an impact that over 2000 years later more than 2 billion people around the globe claim to follow him? How did the doctrines of the faith emerge? Why are there so many denominations? How and when did the collections of books and letters become our Bible? Join us for this 8-week panorama tracing the struggles and triumphs of the earliest Christians to our contemporaries. Led by Rev. Marjorie Wilhelmi. Class began on Wednesday, January 8th but there is still time to join. Time: Wednesday 10 11:30 a.m. OR Wednesday 7:00 8:30 p.m. in the Library. There is no textbook for this class, but a $5 contribution to offset copy costs would be helpful. Please register by calling Becky in the office or sending an to becky@northbookpc.org. See you in class! KNIT WITS The Knit Wits will meet again on Wednesday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. FORT STREET OPEN DOOR VISIT We hope many of you will consider joining us on Thursday, January 30 at 8:00 a.m. for our 5th Thursday of the month trek to Fort St./Open Door program. This is an excellent opportunity to better understand the important work being done by Ben Ogden and his outstanding staff, a community of Detroit area citizens dedicated to serving those less fortunate. Our congregation and its friends have been inordinately generous in its sharing of goods. For that, we thank you. Especially during this time of very cold temperatures, the needs for warm clothes, blankets, mittens and gloves, heavy boots, long johns is so great. The needs go on and on. The work at Fort Street also provides haircuts, makes doctors appointments and even allows for a place to get a hot shower/shave. We will be leaving the church parking lot shortly after 8:00 a.m. If there is enough interest, we may stop to have lunch downtown before returning to Northbrook. If you have questions, please call me at I look forward to sharing this program with you. Blessings, Seglinda Kelle-Pritchard
6 2014 CHANCEL AND WINDOW FLOWERS The Chancel and Window Flower calendars are up in Fellowship Hall. Many dates are still available. The cost is $45 for the Chancel Flowers and $25 for a pair of bud vases for the windows. Simply write your name on the desired date on the sign up sheets. You will receive a reminder notice including a request for payment and the dedication for the bulletin. Your flowers may be taken home with you following the worship service. LITURGISTS NEEDED Please sign up to be a liturgist. The sign up sheet can be found in Fellowship Hall. If you have any questions, please see Pastor Marjorie. THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION FUND Support the education and development of the future leaders of the church! We have established a special fund designated to help members of Northbrook who undertake seminary studies to become ordained ministers in the PCUSA. Won t you consider making a tax-deductible donation to this fund? All monies collected go directly to pay for seminary tuition and other education costs. Blanket Drive for Fort Street Open Door Live the Love and Share the Warmth of Jesus! While most of us enjoy the comfort and warmth of a home, many people in Metro Detroit aren't so fortunate. In honor of the love and comfort we receive from Jesus, please consider donating one or more clean, new or gently used blankets for folks served by The Open Door of Fort Street Presbyterian Church. The Northbrook Mission Connection Committee will collect these blankets in Fellowship Hall near the mission bulletin board through Sunday, January 26th. If you are someone who works in Detroit and would be willing to make an occasional delivery of donated blankets to Fort Street, please let Winnie Davies-Hancock know at (248) or winsomeann@aol.com).
