View this in your browser A Word from the Missions and Social Action Ministry Your Missions and Social Action team is always looking for ways to spread God s message of love and justice. We want to be your voice and ensure that your donations have the most impact. One program we have that we never really talk about is Growing Our Own. It's an initiative we have to encourage and support our youth as they continue their faith journey. Allison Trezona has been involved in many programs, and your MSA has gladly donated to them to show our support for her. Below is a statement about Allison and the work she is doing. Mark Winters USHER TEAM LEADER Jean Kosiara FLOWERS The Cannon family, in celebration of Miles's 5th Birthday Allison Trezona graduated from college this spring and is committing this next year to service in the United Kingdom. She is working through a Lutheran program called Young Adults in Global Mission, that provides young Americans the opportunity to gain perspective from international service work. Allison will likely work for a church in Wolverhampton, where she will lead youth programs within the church and outreach programs in the surrounding area focused Wed. Sept. 6 11:30 a.m. Men's Lunch (aka

2 on youth resiliency. The program expects volunteers to each fundraise $5,000 (1/3 of the total cost for the year). Our Missions and Social Action Committee voted to donate to this cause in effort to support our young people in doing God s work. As a church, we have supported Allison s past public health volunteer work in Honduras, and wish to continue to support all our youth in global mission work. While Allison is working in Colorado and cannot be here to personally thank everyone, she wants our church to know that she deeply appreciates the support from the place that grounds her faith. We are hoping to have Allison speak to the congregation when she returns to the area in August With your continued generous donations, we are hoping to expand our program and encourage more of our youth to spread God s message of love and justice. 3 Ministries Make a Difference Sunday This Sunday, September 10, the Council of Ministries will be sponsoring our annual Time and Talents Sunday, but with a twist! Each of the ministries again will be represented at a table during Coffee Hour sharing information about the work they do. However, in keeping with our Stewardship Ministry's "Make a Difference" theme, the focus this year will be on how each ministry makes a difference in our lives, church and community. Again this year, we will be holding an Ice Cream Sundae Sunday during the event. You will be asked to "travel" to each ministry site with "passport" in hand, to build your ice cream treat as you learn about the ministry. You will receive a "stamp" at each ministry you visit. Filled passports will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Naperville gift certificate. We look forward to having you there! What do women quilting; men in discussion; tutoring of Angolans; a safe space for youth; a warm meal with a place to sleep; and empowering people with disabilities to work in and enjoy their community have in common? The answer is our church building. The Quilting Ladies, Men s Discussion, Angolan Tutoring, Youth Outlook, PADS, and C.A.N. along with other groups have a home with us. Our church building is a haven for many because of your time and pledges. This is Making a Difference. Thank you! Tanya Lyonsford, Chair Missions and Social Action Ministry Women's Circle - Save the Date! "Should I Go on a Mission Trip?" Please join us on Tuesday, September 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the Community room for Women's Circle. Pat Swindle, who traveled to Haiti and worked with the Haiti Foundation of Hope this year, will host a slideshow and discussion on "Ten Days in Haiti: What an Experience!" Flu Shot Clinic Sunday, September 17 The Flu Shot Clinic will be held on Sunday, September 17 in the Community room after the worship service. All are asked to bring an insurance card and rolled up sleeves. Walgreens accepts most insurance plans for flu and pneumonia shots. Please Become a Dart (Industries) Deliverer We are a small but mighty team of two that would like to grow. We are part of the Green Team and Our mission is to collect #6 Styrofoam at church and then deliver it to wait for it Dart

5 Industries in North Aurora for recycling! We are looking for more folks to help with the task. It is not difficult, you can make your own delivery hours, and the reward is knowing that you ve helped keep Styrofoam out of landfill! Did I also mention the fun of wrangling airborne Styrofoam? Currently, we alternate months, and if one of us can t be at church on an assigned Sunday, we ask the other to handle that week. Having more people on the team would lighten the load (oh, that Styrofoam humor!). Training, directions and handling tips are provided. Please help! Contact Susan Greenwood. Women s Spiritual Group - Looking For New Members! We extend a warm invitation to women in the church to attend our Women s Spiritual Group. Beginning in October, we meet on the first and third Monday evenings from 7:15 until 8:45 p.m. in the church library. Our new resource, starting on October 2 is "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong. Our next meeting is Monday, September 21, when we will finish our current resource "Grounded" by Diana Butler Bass. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Marscha Chenoweth. Newcomer Information Meeting Sunday, October 1 Are you interested in learning more about First Congregational Church? You are invited to attend a Newcomer Information meeting on Sunday, October 1 from 11:15 until 12:00 noon in the Library. Guatemala Work Trip with Common Hope The First Congregational team of Susan McNeal- Bulak, Roger DuPuis, Doreen Schweitzer, Jean Kosiara, and Gene Wollaston have signed up to go on the Guatemala Work Trip October 21-28, All of us have gone once or twice already and are going back because it is fun, educational, and very rewarding. If you are interested or want more information, please talk to one of us. There is room for five or so more people. If those dates don t work, Gene Wollaston and extended family members are going July 15-22, 2018, where there is room for five or so more people on that work trip, also. Green Tip - Save the Date! Gain knowledge about recycling in Naperville when the SCARCE director comes to our church on Sunday, September 24, right after worship. You'll have an opportunity to learn more as well as get your questions answered. Details to come.
