1 Notes January 2016 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter Northbrook Annual Meeting Join us in Fellowship Hall for our annual meeting on Sunday, January 31 following worship. A lunch of hearty chicken pot pie and salad will help make the Northbrook Annual Meeting on January 31 a must attend event. Enjoy lunch as well as take a look at the year 2015 in review and a look to the future of The lunch will be brought to you by the Congregational Life Committee. A free will offering will be collected. Live the Love of Jesus Christ Resumes January 6 Living the Questions is for those who are yearning for something more than the shallow platitudes that pass for theology in many churches. It s for those who are looking for a resource within the institution that encourages questions and sparks open dialogue. It s also for those who have stopped taking the church seriously at all. There is a revolutionary revisioning of Christianity already emerging in the world. Living the Questions is offered as an invitation to us all to discover the relevance of Christianity in the 21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like today. Bible Study starts on Wednesday, January 6 in the Library and is offered at 10 11:30 a.m. AND at 7:00 8:30 p.m. and runs for 7 weeks. Come to the session that works best for your schedule. Please register by ing Pastor Marjorie at marjorie@northbrookpc.org. Music in : Calvin s Vital Grant Opportunity Do you have a heart for music in worship? Through the Vital Grants Program, Calvin Institute offers worshipping communities the opportunity for a yearlong process of focusing on worship in a variety of ways. Northbrook plans to study music in worship as a means to gain insights, be inspired in new and fresh ways and become more connected as a congregation and to God. To begin, we have a grant proposal to write! As part of the application process, Calvin challenges us to do some self-exploring, imagining and collaborating as we prepare and plan for the project year. We re looking for people interested in this journey. Come hear more about it after worship on January 10 in the Library. Whether you sing in the choir, pew or shower or just know how music on Sunday morning can move you, come learn more about our plans for 2016 and beyond. Penny Willey Elder, and Music

2 From the Finance Committee: Looking Back, Looking Forward We are currently in that time known to accountants as year end. The finance committee and financial secretary are busily compiling final results for 2015 and preparing the budget for It s a time when we straddle two years, simultaneously looking back and looking forward. Your 2015 giving statements will soon arrive in the mail. Please review them and contact Kathy Brooks or a member of our committee with any questions or concerns. If you have yet to make a financial commitment to Northbrook for 2016, it is not too late to make a pledge or to let us know if you expect your giving to be up, down or similar to last year s level. Your input helps our planning. We also invite you to consider making a per capita contribution of $25 for each Northbrook member in your household. Per capita is an obligation we pay as members of the larger Presbyterian Church. Generally, we owe much more to the Presbytery than we collect from our members so giving to per capita is an opportunity to make a big impact with a relatively small additional gift. As members of the finance committee, we are grateful for the trust you place in us to be good stewards of the resources you provide. Later this month, we ll recap last year s results and present this year s budget. We know that whether we re looking back or looking forward, we will see this generous congregation working for God s purposes as the body of Christ in the world. Thank you for your faithful support. Your Finance Committee: Don Hemberg, Chairman, Amy Annett, Matt Broadwell, Dorothea Clark, and Marjorie Wilhelmi, Pastor SOS - Save the Date Northbrook will be hosting South Oakland Shelter April 3-10, 2016 The Elders, Deacons and staff of Northbrook Presbyterian Church are looking forward to another inspired year of faith, service and stewardship. 3 Knit Wits The wonderful ladies of the Knit Wits group came through again with all sorts of beautiful hand knitted items for the Alternative Gift Market which was held on November 15. We are happy that 100% of our sales is contributed to the Mission budget. We wish to thank all who contributed items, including some at large knitters who are unable to attend the regular meetings. Thank you to Judie Murdock and to Lois Kurta for contributing some beautiful projects to our booth. If you missed this event but would like to purchase a knitted gift for someone, you can contact Mary Hendrien. Many thanks, as well to Winnie Davies-Hancock for her dedication and leadership in this annual event. It is a pleasure to be included. Our regular meetings, twice monthly are on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. We are currently meeting in Marjorie s office. Please join us on January 13th and 27th. We are happy to introduce novices to the craft of knitting or crocheting and to provide yarn and needles to get started. We also wish to thank those who have donated yarns for our use, some of whom have remained anonymous! Transitions 2015 Angel Tree Christmas Present Drive Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Angel Tree and with gifts for the Baldwin Center Holiday Store. 4 Northbrook Preschool children had a wonderful time preparing for Christmas. We were making surprises, singing songs and making wonderful Christmas decorations. We put hats and gloves on the mitten tree and Santa came to visit. The Enrollment process for the school year has begun. Please tell your friends and neighbors about our wonderful preschool. We would be happy to answer questions and schedule a visit. For more information, contact Kerry Callaghan, Director, at (248) Ext. 16., or preschool@northbrookpc.org. Look at our Northbrook Preschool Facebook page and be sure to like us! Check us out!! Bible Donation Here are the joyful recipients of the Bibles Northbrook donated to the New Hope Children's Centre in Kenya. This connection was made through Cyd Abatt and Pastor Oscar Mmbali. We celebrated the 90th birthdays of three of our members in November and December. We wished a very Happy Birthday to Jo Colville, Sam Owen and Bruce Thomas. Chancel & Window Flowers The 2016 Chancel and Window Flower Sign Up Sheets are up in Fellowship Hall. Chancel Flowers are $45 and a pair of Window Flowers is $25. Please consider honoring or remembering a loved one with a beautiful flower arrangement in the Sanctuary and a dedication in the Sunday bulletin. Coffee Hour Hosts Wanted Coffee Hour gives us a chance to connect with one another after worship on Sundays. Coffee cake, cookies, bagels and cream cheese can be set out on the tables to make the event inviting. Coffee and lemonade compliment the treats. Please select an open date on the sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall and do your part as we welcome one another to church each Sunday. Senior Souper Supper We celebrated Christmas with a special Senior Souper Supper on December 10th. As always, a big thank you goes out to Judy & Phil Owen for all their effort and thoughtfulness that goes into this occasion! Senior Souper Supper will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the Library on Thursday, January 14th & 28th. We hope you will join us!

5 9th Annual Alternative Gift Market News Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of Northbrook s 9 th Annual Alternative Gift Market on November 15 and the subsequent Mini Market on December 6. Taking into account the November and December market days and additional sales following the two, we have taken in over $5500 in sales of items and donations. Nearly all of these funds go to the organizations we help to support through the market. We will hold the next mini market before Valentine s Day. If there is a gift market item you would like to see or purchase in between scheduled market Sundays, please contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at (248) or at winsomeann@aol.com. It takes the effort of many Northbrook folks to present these events. Thank you: Co Abatt, Bryan Adair & Kim Bowden-Adair, Cheryl Ardis, Kimberly Ault, Becky Bachand, Kathy Bauhof, Nancy Best, Sue Boese, Matt & Pierce Broadwell, Kathy Brooks, Cheryl Clemens, Gitta Filter, Petie Forbush, Joyce Hamburg, Bill Hancock, Sherrill Heinrichs, Don Hemberg, Carolyn Hemmye, Mary Hendrien, Liz Hurbis, Susan Jenison, Diane Joppie, Mary Jo Johnston, Connie & Bill Jordan, Seglinda Kelle-Pritchard, Susan Koss, Lois Kurta, Tricia LaSota, Paulette Lein, Lou McLeod, Judie & Bruce Murdock, Judy & Phil Owen, Ellie Poster, Peggie Schiller, Debbie Smith, Barb & Ken Stetson, Lynn Stephenson, Colin, Grant & Dave Tengler, Marilyn Thomas, Gayle & Bill Travis, Carl von Ende, Dorothy Warren and Marjorie Wilhelmi. Flood Relief Workday In January Stay Tuned: There will be a Presbytery of Detroit/All Hands Volunteers Detroit Flood Relief workday scheduled around MLK Day. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance provided a $20,000 grant to support the ongoing efforts to provide relief and assistance to those who suffered damages to homes as a result of the 2014 summer flood. Lots of work still needs to be done so it would be great to have a team of Northbrook volunteers participate in the January workday. If you are interested, please contact Winnie Davies-Hancock at (248) or her at winsomeann@aol.com.

6 Dear friends at NPC, Yesterday we received a veritable treasure trove of prayers and cards from you. Thank you!!!!! The Metropolitan Museum of Art cards are beautiful. When we were in seminary in Princeton, we most loved to get on the train and go into the city on a Saturday where we often made our way to the Met for a few hours. What a fun memory. And the cards, a visual treat for the soul. And to have individual Christmas cards (each so thoughtful) to share with our kids on Christmas day, to help really bring home the idea about the many who share with and make possible our ministry, and to remind us about why we celebrate Christmas. With much love and appreciation, Justin, Renee, Autumn, Jack, Cassie and Ethan Sundberg Dear Congregation of Northbrook Church, On behalf of Mend on the Move, I want to extend a huge thank you to all for your generous support of our non-profit organization. You so willingly included us in your annual Alternative Market. You offered your beautiful and perfectly suited space for our benefit concert. Your parishioners have supported us financially, as well as with kindness and eagerness to share our mission. We are overwhelmed and humbled by your willingness to jump in and help a blossoming non-profit grow its mission. As you may know by now, we raised $10,000 at our event on Dec. 4. We truly could not have accomplished this without a community coming together and providing the means for us to tell our story. Our goal now is to make all of our supporters proud by going out there and changing lives one at a time. We will keep you in the loop! With gratitude, Joanne Ewald, Mend on the Move Happy New Year Northbrook Rose Kudos to Becky who keeps us so well informed and to Kathy who keeps us current on our finances. Our church office hums to the song "Blessed Assurance". January, we store our Christmas trimmings away and often times toss away what we think we will not use again. Be careful what you discard. If you have kept a certain item for years, there must have been a reason. An old ornament which has lost its glitter...a letter...a photo...a book...whatever...look at that item once more. Does it give you comfort when you touch it or see it? Does this item bring back memories? I suggest you find a place where you can find this thing. There is always space for a treasure. When you need a lift in spirits, hold or look at this old friend. You will be calmed, smile, maybe cry. Return this item in its place. This treasure has been with you perhaps years. Keep it safe. This is a friend. I know this works. In February, Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday. Make it a special day by doing simple little things which make people you love feel loved. Think love...give love. Your reward will be that you cared enough to share your love. Blessings from my house to your house, Rose
