1 S T. J O H N L U T H E R A N C H U R C H ST. JOHN NEWS Volume 27 Issue 10 October Scuttlebutt Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. James 5:13-16 Sunday mornings in the midst of this church family are always opportunities for healing to occur. In worship we hear and receive God s healing words of grace and forgiveness. At our annual service of healing we reclaim the ancient gift of healing given in the very early days of the Christian church. Through prayer and the ancient practice of laying on of hands and anointing, we seek God s power to relieve the suffering of those afflicted in any way. While we may always trust God s ability to do the miraculous, the healing service is not about faith demonstrations or a display of the spectacular. It simply allows us to offer Christ s gift of wholeness and abundant life to one another, and provides a personal and tangible means to experience God s healing word. The biblical concept of healing involves the mind, body, and spirit. It takes on many forms including relief and comfort from physical ailments, peace of mind amidst emotional distress or grief, and the assurance of forgiveness in lives broken by dysfunction or sin. Our service of healing is essentially a return to baptism where we again learn of our place as God s children, receive anew the seal of the Holy Spirit, and are reminded of the mark we bear on our brows that designates us Christ s own forever. It serves as a bold proclamation that nothing, not even illness, suffering, or death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Join us on Sunday, October 14th as we again celebrate God s gift of healing! 2 Learning opportunities are underway: If you re looking for opportunities to learn, look no further! Check out the following opportunities for spiritual growth: October 4: October 7: October 21: October 25: Bible study meets at 7:00 pm in the Upper Room working on two studies. One is called, Making Sense of Scripture. The other is called "The Greatest Story" and is a character study of Jesus himself from the four gospels. Sunday school is in session at 9:00 am for all ages. Kids grades 5 and under meet with Allison Young in the fellowship hall and learn from the very fun and creative curriculum called "Holy Moly." Adults come together in the Upper Room for a video discussion series by Margaret Feinberg called, The Verbs of God How God moves on our behalf. Cross Training for Fusion Youth meets at 9:00 am with breakfast at the parsonage followed by a lesson series called, Made to Make a Difference by Max Lucado. Book Discussion Group meets at 7:00 pm and will continue a discussion of Joyce Meyer s book, Battlefield of the Mind. Please read through page 171 in preparation for the next discussion. Plan to take advantage of one or more of these opportunities to grow in faith and knowledge! Crop Walk against hunger! Walkers from St. John will gather with other people of faith from around our community to put our best foot forward in the fight to eliminate hunger globally and locally. You can help by either walking or sponsoring a walker in the annual CROP Walk against hunger. When: October 7th at 2:00 pm. Registration begins at 1:00 pm Where: Begins at Columbus Ave. United Methodist Church How long: Walk is 3.2 miles We walk in solidarity with people around the world who must walk miles every day just to obtain the basics for survival. Thank you in advance for your support of this important event. Don t Forget!!!!! The first Sunday of every month is collection day for our local food bank, Care and Share. Please consider a cash donation or bring non-perishable food items to contribute. Celebrate our 25th! We are celebrating 25 years of mobilizing women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. We've been busy creating a just world, supporting global sisters, bringing about health and wholeness, to name a few things! Our organization includes Lutheran women who gather in over 7,000 locations in the U.S. and the Caribbean, for service, study, advocacy, fellowship and more! WELCA embraces all kinds of ministries that support our mission of mobilizing women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. There is a place for you in Women of the ELCA. The Eastern Conference will be held on Saturday, October 20 th at St. John Bellevue. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. with the conference ending at 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served at a cost of $5.00. Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities BRIDGES Out of POVERTY, a community initiative, presented by a training committee from Erie and Huron County and sponsored financially by Sandusky Area Lutherans in Mission (SALM) will be presented on Friday November 2 at Kalahari Convention Center. This training teaches strategies and understanding of persons in generational poverty and how best to assist them in moving out of it. Though it is designed for community partners, attorneys, law enforcement, counselors, judges, educators, probation staff, social workers, social service staff and volunteers, and employers, all who seek a better understanding of persons in generational poverty will benefit. Continuing education credits will be given for nurses, counselors/social workers, attorneys who complete the day long course. Registration through October 13 is which includes lunch and snacks, along with course materials. After that date, the registration fee is Registration deadline is October 26 th. 4 The Giving Tree For the months of October and November, we will be collecting items for Victory Kitchen and for Care & Share. Victory Kitchen is in need of paper products (Styrofoam cups and bowls, paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware). Care & Share is in need of nonperishable food items (canned goods, macaroni & cheese, etc.). When: Sunday, October 28th after church Where: Right here at Church and in the Giving Garden What: Bonfire, hay ride, and fun fall activities! Menu: Hot dog roast, chips, s mores, veggies and dip, donuts, cider, hot chocolate and more! There is no charge for this event! This event brought to you by the Faith Life Team!
