1 Notes January 2017 Northbrook Presbyterian Church Newsletter Live the Love of Jesus Christ Ecumenical Prayer Service for Christian Unity: January 19 at 7 p.m. We are excited to be participating in this worship service with other churches in the area and encourage everyone to attend. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (January 18-25) involves Christian communities across the world and from almost every denomination, and is motivated by the wish to fulfill God s desire that all may be one, as Jesus prayed in John 17. As we worship and pray together with our brothers and sisters in Christ from other denominations, we communicate God s love to the world, cooperate in God s purpose to unite all things in Christ and show the Church as an instrument and sign of the unity of God s kingdom. The worship service will be held at St. Regis Church and will be led by pastors and laity from St. Regis Catholic Church, First United Methodist Church of Birmingham, First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and Northbrook. Northbrook Annual Meeting Join us in Fellowship Hall for our annual meeting on Sunday, January 29 following worship. Enjoy lunch as we take a look back at 2016 and a look to the future of Introducing the New Testament A comprehensive and refreshing introduction to the Bible, this study by Rev. Anne Robertson is designed to meet you where you are as far as knowledge of the Bible goes. If you ve never opened the cover before, this study will help orient you to the books of the New Testament and give you a solid introduction. If you ve explored deeply and want to know more, there is plenty here for you that will be new. If you re simply curious about the Christian faith and would like a non-threatening way of learning more, we welcome you. The study starts Wednesday, January 11 and runs for 6 weeks in the Library. You can join the morning class at 10 a.m. or the evening class at 7 p.m. or feel free to switch between the two as your schedule permits. The book is available from Amazon.com in paperback, Kindle edition or Kindle Unlimited. If you would like us to order the paperback for you, please Marjorie@northbrookpc.org. 2 Mend on the Move Benefit Concert Northbrook Presbyterian Church Friday, February p.m. Join us for an informal evening of music, treats and silent auction to support Mend on the Move, a non-profit serving Metro Detroit that empowers and employs women survivors of abuse through jewelry making. Performance by accomplished singer/songwriter Olivia Millerschin featuring songs from her latest album release "Look Both Ways." Giving Envelopes The 2017 Giving Envelopes have arrived! Please find yours in the main hallway or contact Kathy Brooks at the church. Knit Wits New Start Times Knit Wits will meet in January on Wednesday, January 11 at 7 p.m. and on January 25 at 1 p.m. Please note the time change for the second meeting. All experience levels are welcome! Senior Souper Supper Senior Souper Supper will take place on Thursday January 12 and January 26. Please join us in the Library at 5:30 p.m. for a delicious soup dinner. New Year, New You! You're sure to keep those New Year's Resolutions if you come to Zumba and see how much fun a workout can be! During January, all newcomers get their first class free! For non-newcomers, if you come to three classes in January, you'll get the fourth free. Northbrook Book Club Monday, January 30 Everyone is invited to join book club discussions! New voices are welcome and desired. In this new year, please plan to join in on one or two discussions and bring a friend! On Monday, January 30, we will discuss The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional character Frankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth in this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives. This is an epic story of the greatest guitar player to ever live and the six lives he changed with his magical blue strings. Please join us. 3 Thank You for Supporting the 2016 Angel Tree! Because of your generosity, we provided an abundance of Christmas gifts, clothing, food and household items to three families from Oakland Family Services who were facing financial difficulties during the holiday season. We also provided warm winter clothing that was distributed to the clients of Open Door Ministries. Your donations of bedding, clothing, bags and toiletries to A Place of Refuge also helped put the finishing touches on the house renovations and preparations for the return of their residents. Thank you for sharing the love of Jesus Christ with those in our community who need it most.

Watch future bulletins and newsletters for details. 10 th Annual Alternative Gift Market News Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of Northbrook s 10 th Annual Alternative Gift Market on December 4 and the Mini Market that followed on December 11. Taking into account the sales from the two market days and additional sales made at Winnie s school, we have taken in over $5000 in sales of items and donations. Nearly all of these funds go to the organizations we help support through the market. Take a look at the mission bulletin board in Fellowship Hall to see thank-you notes from the organizations supported by our market sales. We will hold the next mini market on Sunday, February 5 before Valentine s Day. See below for more information. 5 2016 Alternative Gift Market Thank You!

6 Empty Bowls Collection in 2017 For 2017, all of our Empty Bowls loose change and other contributions will go into the mission fund designated for South Oakland Shelter (S.O.S.). This will allow us to build up our source of funds for Northbrook s hosting and/or support of S.O.S. in the future. Please contribute your loose change in the bowl on the nametag table in the main hallway or when you see it in the Narthex or Fellowship Hall. Larger amounts or checks made out to Northbrook with the notation for Empty Bowls on the memo line may be taken to the church office. Thank you for your generosity and support! Save the Date for a Special Mission Project Supporting Literacy February 25 We will be joining the Pi Beta Phi sorority on its National Service Day. The local members are distributing 20,000 books to Detroit community organizations who serve kids and reading. Lots of volunteers are needed. The project location is the downtown campus of the Detroit Medical Center. We will work on Saturday, February 25 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and take the church van. One World Sunday Sunday, March 5 Northbrook will hold a special program and Family Roots International Potluck on Sunday, March 5 at 4:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall in support of Freedom House Detroit. To My Northbrook Family, My heartfelt thank you for your prayers, cards, hugs and caring as my family and I grieve the loss of our beloved James.
